2019’s biggest gaming disappointments

"You probably knew this was coming, but if there was one 2019 game that was more disappointing than any other, it was BioWare’s sci-fi online shooter Anthem. Not even the full force of publisher Electronic Arts’ massive marketing blitz could keep fan skepticism from creeping in, especially given the rough launch of BioWare’s previous game, Mass Effect Andromeda, and the fact that many critics felt Anthem was just EA’s rushed response to Bungie’s and (at the time) Activision’s Destiny franchise."

days gone was very good and it's a shame it hasn't a single nomination at the VGA, it wasn't disappointing, unless you were expecting a game on the same league as uncharted 4 or god of war.

Christopher2380d ago

I liked Days Gone. Solid 7/10 game for me. It took 10 hours to get to a point where I truly started enjoying it, though. And, its gameplay was not as expected as AI was forced to be dumber because nothing else lined up to combat a much better AI (you would die so much with the AI they originally planned). But, I can see why it didn't get nominated.

I can't say I agree with some of the games nominated as I found them to be on par with Days Gone or similar games. But, Days Gone is a good game but not award worthy IMHO.

Hardiman2380d ago

It is incredible and regardless of the snubbing and for the most part manufactured hate(a lot of the early negative reviewers actually went back and re-evaluated their take on the game) it still was a success and will more than likely get a sequel with a much bigger budget!

darthv722380d ago

It can be quite a different end result if you actually give something a chance that you previously had no interest in. Not "you" specifically hardiman but just generally speaking.

Hardiman2380d ago

I get what you're saying Darth. There is a lot of hate for things they haven't even played or at least gave it a shot. Not all though because there's some who are actually dissatisfied with their purchases. Completely understandable but it's the former that bothers me.

King_Noctis2380d ago (Edited 2380d ago )

The game got 71% on Metacritc, so of course its not gonna be nominated for anything. There are many games that got way higher score than this one but still got zero mention for VGA, yet I don’t see anyone said those games got “snubbed”.

nucky642379d ago

so true, hardiman! DG was a FUN game and i can't wait to play part 2 on ps5.

Days Gone is incredible. The tech is the only real knock on it. It's constantly rewarding, has a great cast, dialog, acting, story, music and sound. The world is rich and those hordes are intense. Not having a single VGA nomination is pretty pathetic with the titles they throw in there.

Hardiman2380d ago (Edited 2380d ago )

I agree and there's a load of fans who'd raise a toast to that! It's the most fun I've had with any game this year.

Not saying I didn't love RE2, Metro Exodus or even DSbut just in terms of sheer enjoyment it goes to DG for me.

An open world done right. Incredibly detailed and being able to go into any structures is a very nice touch. Really intense and those Hordes strum up some kind of instinct from long ago and the terror with that is palpable! I loved a lot of the characters, actually liked them.

Only 6 people worked on the game world and that to me says so much! I can't imagine what they can do with more talented people, more memory and more power next gen.

fatbastard112380d ago

How is the world “rich” though?
Rich would be interesting and unique side missions along with cool Easter eggs and secret locations. I’ve only seen this quality in GTA V, Witcher 3, and Red Dead.
Fetching for supplies isn’t even remotely unique or interesting

P_Bomb2380d ago

“ I’ve only seen this quality in GTA V, Witcher 3, and Red Dead. ”

Only? Every Yakuza game has a rich world. If secret areas is what you’re looking for, man I spent weeks exploring the secret areas of Zebes in the original Metroid and that was 30yrs ago.

shammgod2380d ago

In the end, the only people that hate on DG are the people that didnt play it. And the one girl from some website that complained that all the freakers were white.

nucky642379d ago

i'm with you, necrum - days gone was incredible.

Looking at Sony's offerings (aka high quality) I dont blame anyone from expecting that from almost every one of their games.

fatbastard112380d ago

The way these sony exclusives are praised speaks more about the competition, or lack thereof.Everything in life is relative

Chocoburger2380d ago

I didn't enjoy it that much, many others felt the same way.

The first third of the game was terrible, a boring slog. With a wimpy weak Decon, crappy bike, and a dumb story with bad characters. I'd rate it 3/10 in terms of enjoyment.

I expected the game to remain terrible, but as I progressed it actually got better.

The second third became slightly more interesting with a more capable Decon and bike. The story started to get a bit more interesting. I'd give it a 4/10 in terms of enjoyment.

As I continued to play, the game improved further.

The final third (reaching the snowy area), Decon was fully capable, with a great bike, and the story was actually starting to become very interesting. I wanted to know what was going to happen next! Unfortunately, the whole game nosedived at the very end. The final mission was horrible, the ending was laughably pathetic, even the animation of the flower pedals falling out of the cup was poorly done. If the final mission and ending were good, I'd give this last third a 7/10, above average. But since it faceplanted at the end, I have to give it a 5/10.

Overall score 4/10. The main issue was the core gameplay loop with too much grinding, too much resource hunting. Boring / dumb enemies, no great boss battles, story that takes way too long to start getting interesting, and no final pay off at the end. Just a cliffhanger for what could be in a sequel.

There is nothing surprising or disappointing about Days Gone being ignored for awards. That said, I hate the VGA show, its a terrible show lacking in respect, appreciation, or intelligence. It means nothing. So don't be disappointed that a game you liked was ignore by an irrelevant awards show.

King_Noctis2380d ago (Edited 2380d ago )

What should Days Gone be nominated for? And forgive me if I’m wrong, but aren’t we supposed to expect every game to be “on the same league as uncharted 4 or god of war“? Why lower the standard just because the game was developed by Bend? Is the game not a full priced $60 game?

DafunkyRebel2380d ago

Pretty sure it has GOTY nomination for Geoff Keighly’s VGA show

Definitely Anthem..
Days Gone was disappointing to me but has a pretty big following and I still need to beat it. Could get better..
Crackdown 3 I had a bit of fun with but was ultimately a major disappointment.

Anthem far and away though

Christopher2380d ago (Edited 2380d ago )

Get to the third camp in Days Gone and let the story unfold. That's when I started liking it. Crackdown 3 SP was exactly what was expected, but I can see the issues people have with the MP.

Anthem should definitely win this award, though.

Sm00thNinja2380d ago

I just found the person I've been looking for at a camp and she was pretty cold. Up to that point i wasn't having the most fun

NXFather2379d ago

That's already over 20 hours in though lol.

Christopher2378d ago

***That's already over 20 hours in though lol.***

I don't see how that's possible. I got there in less than 10 easily. Are you sure you're not talking about the military camp? Third camp is the one you go to for medicine.

Traecy2380d ago

Anthem was disappointing for me,it could have been so much better.

Kabaneri2380d ago

Anthem is not a disappointment, the game had all the symptoms of a AAA failure and the internet could smell the bs from a mile away.

Double_O_Revan2380d ago

Anthem was actually the most entertaining game of the year, from an outside perspective. I got countless hours of laughter reading every disastrous article that came out. And they never stopped coming.

Could Anthem live on? Tech allowing local server hosting existed, former executive producer says

BioWare's multiplayer shooter Anthem was terminated this week because EA no longer wanted to maintain servers for people to play the game on, and without them, no one can play the game. But the former executive producer of Anthem has revealed that BioWare had technology working, close to the game's release, that would enable us to host our own servers to play the game on.

EA/Bioware should allow us to host our own servers to let this game live on.

Christopher137d ago

I'd be fine just playing it as a localhost and dumb as rocks AI bots. Just give me the choice.

Anthem Players Report Download Errors A Week Before Shutdown

BioWare and EA had previously said the game would be accessible to those who owned it until it shuts down on January 12.

Only days remain before EA will switch off the servers to BioWare's ill-fated multiplayer game

Time flies (like a Javelin suit): there are only 10 days left to play BioWare's ill-fated multiplayer game Anthem before the servers are switched off, presumably forever.

In my opinion, Anthem was a good IP that was worthy of a no man's sky or cyberpunk 2077 treatment.

To this day, their sub reddit is active and I was able to get into a game quickly a few weeks ago when I booted it up.

It is a shame EA and Bioware didn't want to give the game the overhaul it needed to turn it into a competent looter shooter.

GamerRN149d ago

They were close to releasing the overhauled version and then EA cancelled it

TheGamersDojo148d ago

I wholeheartedly agree. If ANY game deserved to get the rework/relaunch it deserved it was this one. More than literally any other. Even over FFXIV, No Mans Sky etc.

SlothLordPootus150d ago

I just finished this up a couple days ago. Although it's a bit repetitive and the story is meh, the game feels great to play. Even if you can only hop on the game for a couple hours before it shuts down, I think it's worth it.

chicken_in_the_corn150d ago

Really enjoyed this. Shame to see it go.

Software_Lover150d ago

I didnt know servers were still up. I could have been playing!!!

2nd comment attempt (1st doesn’t appear & this may register as duplicate):

They can spend billions to buy or get bought but they can’t spend a fraction of that to fix or overhaul a game that could have been truly special, smh.
