Death Stranding awards 2019. Music, performance, game direction and best ps game (in other companies) are almost impossible to beat. It will win at least 2 and 5 awards max in the game awards I feel.

It'll be between Resident Evil 2 and Death Stranding.

I can see Super Smash Bros. Ultimate getting GOTY and Best Fighting Game, but RE2 and Death Stranding are some serious competition for GOTY. Shocked that Control is in there and not Days Gone.

Also no Gears 5 in the GOTY category is pretty damning for Microsoft and it'll lose to Modern Warfare in best Action Game more than likely

I’m sorry, journalists be damned, Days Gone should be on that game of the year list. It’s one of the best experiences to be had this generation. It’s not just good, it’s great.

Best Performance Nomination: Norman Reedus.

Let me just start by saying that I like Normal Reedus and have largely enjoyed him in all his roles whether he's killing zombies or delivering packages. But I think a lot of his 'acting' is just him being himself while following a script that he probably largely contributes to. He's a very no-nonsense, rugged dude in life and those qualities/attributes translate well to the roles he takes on. He doesn't really have to 'act' much. He's got his natural voice and attitude and those things do the work for him.

He was a natural fit for The Walking Dead and Death Stranding. I'm not saying he doesn't have to act because he certainly does, but his natural personality bears much of the workload or 'actload' he's tasked with.

An underwhelming year for AAAs, been loving the crap out of the more niche games though.

RE2 is nice but it's a remaster did we really just rule out other good games because they just really needed the remaster to take a spot? If a remaster wins goty.. what a sad way to end the generation.

No Gears 5 for game of the year? That's quite the snub especially since a remake of a decades old game has been nominated.

Don't really understand the distinction between action and action/adventure? DMC and Astral Chain is in action but Sekiro in action adventure. What places Borderlands, Control, and Sekiro in action/adventure and not action? Exploration? Then Metro and Gears don't belong soley in action either.

Death Stranding, Resi, and Zelda make sense in adventure while Apex, Astral, COD, and DMC make sense in action but the others seem arbitrarily placed in one or the other.

And Borderlands makes more sense in RPG than Kingdom Hearts which imo would make more sense in one of the action categories.

Action/Adventure is a mind-numbingly useless "genre" descriptor in gaming.

I would have loved to see Jedi Fallen Order on the list.

I find it odd that Control got a game of the year nomination over DMC 5, Gears 4, and few other games.

I still find the categories for the game awards to be strange. For example they have best “action” game that lumps a bunch of genres together. Best shooter should be category separate from “action” game. And Metro Exodus is nominated as “best action game” despite it being a an Action adventure games. There is also no best technical graphics.

I think everyone believe that Death Stranding is not 7 out of 10 but not 10/10
So being nominated as GOTY shows just how stupid the industry is...

I'm surprised to see Death Stranding nominated for 7 awards. I'm pretty sure it will win at least one of them.

For me my GOTY has to go to Resident Evil 2. They did such an excellent job with that game even though it's a remake but it is structured very differently to the original. Capcom has been on a roll lately so I do hope it wins GOTY. They deserve it.

The only game i played was Outer Worlds from this list deleted after an hour lol.

I enjoyed RE2, Sekiro and DMC5 but my GOTY goes to Death Stranding. What a year!

If Death Stranding wins ANY award, I will incinerate all my consoles and my gaming laptop altogether with my wife, and will sell what's left of my soul to EA.

Not really an exciting year for games to be honest.

If Smash Bros don’t win game of the year then the whole show awards don’t count

No other game sold better, had more hours put in, had more love put in from a developer than this one game

If you do not own multiple systems your choice for game of the year should be toss aside. It’s a biased answer that do not take any other games on other systems seriously.

You might as well just list your nominations for ps4 only chart where it competes against other ps4 games.

Now for those that do own multiple systems common sense would put Smash Ultimate as game of the year not only is it well received by Sony, Microsoft, PC and Nintendo fans

Just a psa that Disco Elysium deserves a look, it's possibly the most incredibly written and detailed isometric rpg out there to date. it might not be to everyone's tastes but if you're a fan of Planescape, BG and so forth you need to give it a shot at some point- it's satisfying to see it got a couple nominations.

Microsoft went an entire generation with not only barely any games even being nominated for goty but 0 games winning goty.

The final full year before a new gennstarts is always a slow burner for new games. Not too many standouts tbh

Why am I not surprised Death Stranding is up there... I honestly think Geoff should not have hosted this given his clear bias towards Kojima.

I really enjoyed Outer Worlds, and I'm a massive fan of MHW Iceborne - but ZA/UM's Disco Elysium should absolutely win best role playing game.

Disco is hugely original, extremely clever and innovates the genre in ways that no other game has this year.

I'm so pleased that it's getting a console release next year, any fan of RPG games owes it to themselves to play this amazing game.

Sekiro should be game of the year. Excellent game.

Really surprised/disappointed that Days Gone received no nominations and Metro Exodus only received one nomination (Action Game) and wasn't nominated for GOTY. Both are easily my top two games I played this year. I'd say Days Gone edges over Metro though if I had to choose. Playing Death Stranding currently and enjoying it; but still not as good as the aforementioned.

How can death stranding be nominated for goty. Heck metacritic had to weed out some low scores for the game to even stay above 80. Pathetic Gears 5 takes a dump on death stranding in ever way.

If Death Stranding wins, it will win fair and square. Geoff really has no say in the votes. Seriously people need to educate themselves better when it comes to these things. There's a jury that is formed of so many gaming journalists and personnel from all around the world that will decide who will get GOTY. The decisive factors that will make the jury choose which game will earn that award could be anything from creativity, buzz the game created, story, how original the game is compared to others and did it achieve what it wanted to achieve. How's the music score? How's the sound design? What about the gameplay and the graphics etc. They will judge the game based on that and that only. Basically the cumulative of all that will decide which game earns that title.
I picked Death Stranding because it's a game that made feel I was playing something original (for once) and because the story is engaging and the gameplay mechanics are built around it and the consistency of the theme of connection can be seen from start to end and it's nuts! Moreover, the social aspect of the game is PERFECT! It worked way beyond my expectations. I was worried about the social aspect, boy I was wrong! Yes, its core loop is mainly about delivering but Kojima made that aspect fun to play. He managed to make that core loop, addictive.
That being said, I loved RE2 and I thought it was an excellent example of how remakes should be done. I played it twice in a row and I think it deserves a lot of recognitions mainly because it was well done for a remake. But, remakes shouldn't be candidates for GOTY and that's my opinion of course. If there was a category for best remake, RE2 would win hands down! It's really a game that should serve as an example to others who attempt to remake a game.
