Google Stadia Launch Review: A Technical, Conceptual Disaster

Google Stadia is launching with a whole host of problems, from technical issues to the concept of the entire model.

The_Sage2377d ago

Sounds about how I figured.

Muzikguy2377d ago

A disaster? Gee, nobody saw that coming.

jznrpg2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

Most of us knew internet and tech isn’t ready yet . And Google launches many things only to drop them a couple years later . I am sure MS and Sony will have better options before Google figures it out and they both have Libraries . Obviously PS has the largest but MS shits all over Google and that’s not good at all. I don’t have much faith in Nintendo with cloud tech as they can’t even get a half way decent online service going in 2019 but if they could do that and cloud they crap all over Google too. Google jumps the gun way too much and throws shit at a wall and hopes something sticks . But they have closed so many services they should have learned that they need to pick less areas and take their time and get some of them right. They can afford to fail a lot because of their cloud and info gathering devilry but damn , get something else right mofos

battlegrog2376d ago

Google is to knew to this and doesn't have the backlog. The internet is ready. Xcloud has been getting pretry good reviews so far for it. When it launches next year it will have 4500 games

Retroman2376d ago

Oooouya and Onlive said......we"ll be seeing you at the dumpster soon.

This will be gone none existing soon of not when new xbox ps5 comes

UltraNova2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

Something tells me it wont disappear that easily. Xcloud is coming and it will surely be more enticing to users; PS now will be revamped and offer a similar service to Xcloud if not better (content wise, at least). Google will struggle but will copy the other two in an effort to keep the shop open; after that all bets are off.

sagapo2377d ago

I kinda agree. If big developers start jumping on the streamtrain, it will probably be the future of gaming, wether we like it or not, and honestly, I don’t like it.

Clown_Syndr0me2377d ago

How do you mean better content wise?

I use Xcloud to stream from my console so I have access to every game I own and every game on gamepass. Doesn't get much better than that.

I hope PS does get equivalent though, since I got Xcloud I've hardly used the TV.

UltraNova2376d ago

@clown_Symdrome

Content as in variety and quality of games you can stream both 3rd party and exclusives.

battlegrog2376d ago

Ps now will not be better than xcloud. Its partnered with MS to use its structure. It will be as par when revamped

LMAO!! A flop on arrival.

FernDiggidy2376d ago

It's so absolutely beautiful to see!!!!

Baza2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

Massive resolution and framerate drops, sporadic lag affecting gameplay.. no thank you. My suspicions confirmed

Brave_Losers_Unite2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

You don't need suspicions when all you had to do was look at all of the complaints of streamed gaming that has been going on for the past 5 years

Palitera2377d ago

Or common sense.

Remote gaming = lag. Why there are always so many people in consistent denial?

SephirothX212377d ago

This is very early days. Stop jumping to conclusions before you have any hard data to go on. Even if Stadia did flop and is a technical disaster, that does not mean the future of gaming isn't streaming because Sony and Microsoft are also heavily investing in streaming. Google are not a startup so its a marathon and not a sprint to them. And btw I am a software engineer working on game streaming tech so I know a bit more than you average air heads.

CaptainObvious8782377d ago

Ahhh I see, so that's why you're so arrogantly and foolishly championing the rest of us to bend over and accept the digital future monopoly.

Really goes to show, you of all people should know game streaming is absolutely not a comparative alternative, but you're invested in it's success so you'll continue to keep spouting nonsense completely divorced from reality.

crazyCoconuts2377d ago

More than the average air head, or more than all of us, who are average air heads? Just want to make sure I understand....

DarXyde2377d ago

A software engineer working on game streaming tech...

Thank you for being upfront about that conflict of interest.

Allow me to ask you a question as someone with a little common sense: knowing how much hype Google has put behind this service, do you think that maybe—just maybe—they would be better served by making sure they had a solid, fully featured debut by delaying it to make sure the service launches in a presentable and admirable condition?

I assure you, this does not help them. Stadia launched with negative perception. What's more, it is from Google which is a huge company. They may have single handedly killed all interest in this form of content delivery.

Brave_Losers_Unite2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

Lol says the airhead who incessantly cried about Stadia in many articles and now when there are many negative reviews you decide to change direction. Air heads don't seem to have a larger memory span than a toddler

rainslacker2377d ago

Back when I first started in the industry, I was making Kinect API's. MS was going to go hard on Kinect 2, and out of the gate, the company I worked for thought that they'd get ahead of the curve by making tools to make good use of the product. That went to waste in the end. Obviously, Kinect was not going to have anywhere near the sustainability of streaming, but the point is, what may appear to be the golden child of the future, may not end up doing anything in the end. If the market struggles for years and continuously fails to meet expectations, then it will be abandoned.

With game streaming, I think it's way too soon to assume it will fail from any given service provider, but Google isn't exactly hitting the ground running, and it's easy enough to speculate on where they'll end up if they don't get their sh*t together. Google seems aimless. Sony seems to have a direction, although not specifically defined. MS I think has a clear vision for where they want to go with it, but haven't made us completely aware of all the details yet.

All of that though doesn't mean that it's the future. It could stick around forever, and forever remain an option.

But, the contention comes from people that say, "It's the future". It's a singular assertion which excludes everything else, and that goes against common sense, and I can't even count how many times I've heard about what the future is in my 40 some years of gaming.

That said, I will say that while i was making Kinect API's, never once did I ever claim it was the future. I was more reserved than that. One user on here in particular, whose name I can't remember, used to have a lot of discussions with me on the topic. He'd swear up and down about how it was going to be the biggest thing, and take over gaming, and how MS was going to usher in some magical new way to play games....and this was in the last couple years of the 360's life. I said Kinect worked fine when it's limitations and strengths were considered properly, and it worked when you did things right.

Point it, even if you're working on streaming tech, and understand what is possible, a little pragmatism about it's place in the market both now and in the future is not really a bad thing.

BlaqMagiq12377d ago

So you're helping contribute to the downfall of gaming. Gotcha.

nyu12377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

@CaptainObvious878

Digital will probably make up a large chunk of the future, just accept it lol.

Yes that comes with disadvantages, but also tons of advantages. Devs will be able to do things they haven't been able to do before on your client machine.

@DarXyde

because that's not how it works. This will take lots of time to test, iterate on and become viable for most people, or even value for money. What is for sure is that there will probably be significant improvement over time. This WILL improve, you can be sure of that.

DarXyde2377d ago

nyu1,

"because that's not how it works. This will take lots of time to test, iterate on and become viable for most people, or even value for money. What is for sure is that there will probably be significant improvement over time. This WILL improve, you can be sure of that."

So what are betas for?

Google is charging a premium for an inconsistent platform with no compelling software and limited performance. They launched before they were ready, plain and simple.

I wish these ideas would die but maybe if enough companies fail then maybe it will. Streaming will produce lag. It's bad enough now with online games like COD and others. Imagine having to stream a game like that instead of playing it locally. All these companies try and sell an idea like Netflix when streaming movies and music doesn't require input from the user.

Parasyte2376d ago

Don't forget input delay as well. I have seen videos of people experiencing a full second of input delay.

Kabaneri2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

The only shot Stadia had at success was a subscription that included a pool of free games like Gamepass. Nobody is gonna pay $60 (on top of the sub and possible data costs) to stream games that came out last year.

RememberThe3572377d ago

If they want to be the Netflix of games they're gonna have to actually charge like Netflix. Who wants to pay for the right to pay more?

Muzikguy2377d ago

We might be surprised. People are gladly giving up rights and ownership for ease of use so you never know

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio23d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing23d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit23d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing23d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
