Kawata: Japanse developers have difficulty to develop for next generation

In an interview with GameRush.nl Masachika Kawata (Resident Evil 5) told he thinks it's logic Japanse developers have difficulty developing for the next generation consoles. Developing for the next generation is easier for people who are used to developing for PC.

Kawata thinks his team and everybody at Capcom is doing a great job in the production of Resident Evil 5. And of course they feel pressured. Not only there's the huge success of Resident Evil 4, but also just by making a Resident Evil game people get high expectations.

Kawata wasn't very clear on the possibilty for a PC version of his game; "When the fans want it, we will consider developing it."

Japanese devs doesn't have enough Technical experience as western devs do (they had a lot of experience developing PC games in the past)

But then again, Japanese devs still make better games (Gameplay wise and graphics wise)

I mean just look at resident evil 5 and MGS4 and FFXIII ... Technical and artistic achievement

InMyOpinion6316d ago (Edited 6316d ago )

The larger studios are still good at graphics, the smaller ones are mediocre.

I think that difference in graphical prowess is smaller when you compare large and small western studios.

Many western developers take inspiration from the Japanese developers and their focus on art direction. Mirror's Edge is the latest example of that.

Speaking of good art direction, I wish Sega would release a new Jet Set Radio game. Or Panzer Dragoon. Panzer Dragoon Orta and Jet Set Radio Future were the main reasons I purchased an Xbox last gen.

"The larger studios are still good at graphics, the smaller ones are mediocre."

Look at the size of Remedy (one of the smallest developers) and you will see that with the recent screens of "Alan Wake", this comment is not entirely true. It really depends on the individual artists in the studio and how much time/money they have to put into a title.

Not Capcom. Lost Planet, Dead Rising plus Street Fighter IV and RE5 to come.

PotNoodle6316d ago

Am i the only one, not that interested in RE5 anymore? :\

BYE6316d ago

Yeah, it looks like a generic shooter, I hope there will be enough quiet sequences with puzzles and atmosphere, the stuff that defines a RE game.

Nederob6315d ago

In the interview on GameRush you can read something which goes like the following:

"The stuff we've shown is mostly open areas with lots of action. I can promise you there will enough narrow areas with scary moments in it."

(something like that...)

Capcom's willingness to invest in experiments and scrap them sets them apart form many other developers (Nintendo have a similar methodology). Far too often companies push a game setting or game mechanic that is just not that good and the final product is middling or poor.

I mean 0, 1 and Code Veronica should be way before we get into 5 or 6.

Darkseeker40d ago

5 and 6 are so bad that even Capcom want to pretend they don't exist.

Levii_9240d ago

Dude Code Veronica is bad too but RE5 and 6 were mega successful and to me it makes much more sense for Capcom to do them instead. Nobody cares about Code Veronica except niche fixed camera era RE fans, i bet most modern RE fans probably don't know Code Veronica even exists. Based on all that i don't believe CV remake is coming but we will see i guess.

MehmetAlperTR40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Actually RE5-6 was not Classic RE game.. They are not even Survival Horror game.. They are just an action game with coop and named by RE... And for me RE Code Veronica was masterpiece.. I remembered the first time i played it in Dreamcast.. It was absouletly excellent game. And specially for RE6.. I was quit from game after the camera shakes when Leon's kick to zombies.. There's a video about RE6 and they are telling the truth about that shitty game https://www.youtube.com/wat... here it is.. Enjoy it..

Neonridr40d ago

people are DYING for a Code Veronica Remake. Not sure who you are talking to, but the die-hard RE fans of the series are very familiar with every entry. That's what it means to be called a die-hard fan.

neutralgamer199240d ago

I am sure If they were to remake CV that it 2ont have fixed camera angle. I hope whatever they do they take their time like RE2/4 remakes and not rushed with cut content like RE3 remake

Before they should do RE5 they should go back and remake earlier games. In a perfect scenario we would get CV and RE/Zero before RE5/6

Code Veronica on Dreamcast was absolutely AWESOME.

It makes more sense for them to remake earlier games like Code Veronica. RE5 is a good game though - it's not THAT different from RE4.

RE5 just doesn't really need to remade in general. The co-op element makes it tricky - you'd probably add more moments where Chris is by himself enhance the horror but some would want co-op to stay.

thesoftware73040d ago

RE:5 Was and still is a great game, with hands down the best Merc mode, that I still play from time to time with my brother.

RE:6 blah, I agree, it was awful.

Redgrave40d ago

Other than Code Veronica, 6 is the one ai want to see remade the most only because pretty much everything has to be redone; can't streamline that hot mess.

DarXyde40d ago

6 was pretty bad. 5 just tried too hard in being an action-oriented RE4.

In some fairness to Capcom, 5 was the first Resident Evil on then-new hardware for them (X360 and PS3). And it was pretty damn hard to follow up RE4.

Imagine everyone's surprise when EA of all companies dropped Dead Space.

Alos8839d ago

The first half of 5 wouldn't be too hard to do in the more grounded style the remakes have gone for, but the second half gets pretty silly and uncomfortable at parts.
6 is a wash. You'd have to basically make a whole new game to salvage that one at this point.

__y2jb39d ago

6 is garbage. 5 is excellent.

Hopefully if and when they do a RE5 remake, they give it the RE3 remake treatment, because this is certainly one title that I don't want a faithful remake of.
