Has Blizzard solved the sequel dilemma?

Launching a sequel to a service-based game can easily lose player goodwill -- but Overwatch 2 may have found a clever way to thread the needle.

Not really no. This is an expansion that they are calling a sequel. If you remove the PvE things the changes to the core PvP experience amount to what other games would call a 'patch'

They are calling it Overwatch 2 in order to win back old players by tricking them into thinking it's an entirely new experience.

All this having been said. I wish ever live service worked this way. Creating a sequel to Destiny or Division for example is just annoying. They should be evergreen consistently evolving experiences.

I agree. Much better to keep fixing and building than to start over every 3 years and split the team up.

jib2375d ago (Edited 2375d ago )

I personally don't have a problem with it. I don't understand the pve statement since pve IS what makes it a sequel. It's the only incentive to getting OW2 since OW1 owners are getting all the new pvp stuff as well as be able to play together(no split community). I think it's unfair to call the pve aspect of it a "patch" since none of us know the extent of it

@notellin They are still continuing to build and fix as OW1 will continue to get the same patches and content

DonDon30002375d ago

Agreed. And these sports games should do the same. NBA and Madden.

jib2375d ago

For context, I haven't bought sports games for the very reason that it is just a roster update. I do have a genuine question about this though. What exactly is an economically viable solution? Everyone hates anything that has to do with paying at times due to corporate greed(and rightfully so) but to a certain minimum degree, new content does require funding considering this does require a team of working programmers/artists/writers/et c

DonDon30002374d ago (Edited 2374d ago )

Well I had an idea once (for sports games ONLY, not other types of games): even though everyone hates product placement and ads, putting that stuff in the background of the stadiums and refreshing the ads weekly would actually give a sense of authenticity to a sports game. Because therr are tons of background ads in real professional sports. Doritos, ads for latest films, etc. But only in background (dont interrupt gameplay to force us to watch it). This would pay for the cost of the developers having to update the rosters and gameplay at no cost to the consumer and without needed to rely on microtransactions. If ads are enough to pay the NBA its certainly enough revenue to pay for the maintenance of the game.

Salooh2375d ago (Edited 2375d ago )

Im probably buying it but I feel like if they named it differently and made the price 40$ I would feel ok. But calling it a sequel just feels wrong. For me at least..

Also, after all the success they got and after waiting all these years, that's what they are offering for a SEQUEL? Just gives bad taste in my mouth and it hint that their creativity is not as impressive as I thought. Overwatch 1 was impressive and addictive and new, overwatch 2 won't last as long. Oh well..

If im wrong and they are still a creative team, overwatch 2 would be a filler until their big thing but they need to say it NOW if they want me to believe in them..

Blizzard and sequels = Copy and Paste = nothing new

CorndogBurglar2375d ago

Diablo sequels have all been significantly different than each other.

Absonite2375d ago

From what I've read about this, it seems like it's basically going to be an update

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
