Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC is a mess | Polygon

A beautiful game marred by crashing and stuttering issues.

Kombatologist2310d ago

A Rockstar game that's a mess at launch? You don't say.

Jin_Sakai2310d ago

That’s the beauty of console gaming. You download the game or insert a disk and just play. Not settings to fiddle with or game crashes. Just plug and play.

Jin_Sakai2310d ago

@kernel

“Often that’s not the case, and you know it”

Every game I’ve ever purchased worked as intended.

traumadisaster2310d ago

Where you there on x1 launch, where it said installing for hours yet it was downloading, biggest mess ever but you had it perfect, prob 4 yo at the time

bloop2310d ago

It's obviously easier to get a game running right on consoles when they have to make sure it'll run properly on any number of different configurations/system setup/components when it comes to PC. To be fair to R*, I didn't come across any major bugs in my full playthrough on base PS4.

AspiringProGenji2310d ago (Edited 2310d ago )

And here’s the beatuty of PC gaming: You can actually troubleshoot or avoid crashes by tweaking settings and still get a better performance than consoles day one, at least until the devs patch the game. All I did was disable antivirus for an hour and boom. The next day R* already patched that out. Then after the devs fix the other issues, which is not affecting everyone, console fanboys go back into hiding

“And here’s the beatuty of PC gaming: You can actually troubleshoot or avoid crashes by tweaking settings and still get a better performance than consoles day one“

And here’s the beauty of console gaming: You don’t have to troubleshoot to play games and have exclusives such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, The Last of Us: Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and one storefront instead of multiple launchers to play all your games.

“console fanboys go back into hiding“

Resorting in calling people fanboys now? Smh.

Knushwood Butt2310d ago

Just curious, but why bother with xbox1 if you have a killer PC?

AspiringProGenji2310d ago (Edited 2310d ago )

Try playing a console game without installing day one patches and see how that goes..

Not every PC game is broken day one. It is unfortunate that we have to go thru this but it is not often a big deal. As I said, all I had to do was disable the antivirus and I was already playing the game just fine at much better specs than console.

Vegamyster2310d ago

The vast majority of PC games run fine at launch and competition through store fronts lowers prices quicker or at launch, that's not a con lol.

UltraNova2310d ago

What are you all blabbing about? Its R* just give them free pass and get it over with, you know you want to.

Psychotica2310d ago (Edited 2310d ago )

Working perfectly fine for me. The only problem I had was my BitDefender software was blocking it. I haven’t had any stuttering or crashing (i7-6700k/16GB RAM/1080Ti). That’s with a mix of high and ultra settings at 3440x1440

traumadisaster2310d ago

I get random 4 second pauses on any setting with gtx 1080, i56600k. I know the cpu is old but it keeps hitting 100% and I think that is what is doing it.

1440/120 FPS or 900p I still get it, Vulcan or dx12. I’ve tried low settings too.

AspiringProGenji2310d ago (Edited 2310d ago )

Shadows and water physics are very taxing. Try setting Those in medium or low. Also keep MSAA and TSAA off. I have a 1080 as well and it handles the graphics just fine with high-to-ultra settings, Although have a i7 7700k so I experience no stutter

Also Vulkan > Ds12

Baza2310d ago

It’s a PC game what did you expect

FlyingFoxy2310d ago

Didn't take long for an obvious console fanboy to appear.

“Didn't take long for an obvious console fanboy to appear.“

So he’s a fanboy for stating facts? Console are plug and play experience.

Ceaser98573612310d ago

BAGADEESHU

It seems you clearly need help.. I understand all this PC MASTER RACE and shit and still you have to wait and then the game gets messy doesn't mean you will attack Consoles ... Relax kid

Ceaser98573612310d ago

"Didn't take long for an obvious console fanboy to appear."

call it a taunt like how PC folks goes on saying "THANKS FOR BETA TESTING" they need to learn what beta testing is bdw Getting an old game why not shut up and play instead of calling out consoles ?

NiteX2310d ago

For it to be fully polished...

monochromer2310d ago

I thought PC players said it'd be worth the wait and that they'd get the best version.

traumadisaster2310d ago

Well most all games get there problems sorted, console or pc.

But you’ll never get that 30fps fix on console. Not trying to take a run at ya, I’m just saying pc with 60+ FPS has been a thing forever.

AspiringProGenji2310d ago

It is. Not everyone is having the same problema. I am playing the gane just fine, with minor issues

william_cade2310d ago

Why are PC launches always sucky?

kneon2310d ago (Edited 2310d ago )

Too much variety of hardware and software, there is just no way to test every possible combination. Especially as things are changing during and even after development is complete.

So every PC launch is followed by "How to fix crashes in XXX" articles.

william_cade2310d ago

Makes sense. I don't game on PC other than text based RPGs from time to time. I

traumadisaster2310d ago

Well it goes back to the og Xbox and Dreamcast when dlc was invented. Back then many were so excited, including myself playing online nba online with my friends, nfl2k on Dreamcast.

But there was a few old guys preaching and we all shouted them down. Does anyone old remember what they warned?

“You guys don’t know what your asking for, it’s the start of getting games released not finished and patched in later. “

You think Rockstar views Red Dead 2 as a failure because it didn't sell 150m copies?

jznrpg118d ago

3 billion or so in revenue not including online stuff I’m sure they don’t

SethNW118d ago

I am pretty sure they don't. It was profitable and made them a lot of money. Not GTA5 money but far from failure. Maybe it is lower priority franchise, due to being smaller, but that is about the lowest they would put it as. Only thing they do consider failure is RDR2 Online, unlike GTA5 Online, that RDR2 Online flopped. Hence why it got less support. And when it come to profits, sales for both combined don't come close to GTA Online microtansactions. Hence why everything very quickly got canceled and GTA Online was top priority, so no GTA6 for a long time, no DLC for GTA5, despite there being 5 DLCs planned, at least I think it was 5, give or take one. But as I see it, they needed to rejuvenate interest and all, hence why GTA6 eventually is getting made. But what they are really looking forward to is refresh of Online.

ZeekQuattro117d ago

Only in terms of the online aspect of the game. They didn't support it as much as they did GTA V Online. I remember people being pissed about that.

jznrpg118d ago

I own a few GTAs but never played them. I love Red Dead though

Yui_Suzumiya112d ago (Edited 112d ago )

Boring and overrated. Red Dead Redemption is pretty good though. The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is my personal GOAT. We need more stuff like that from TooKyo.

victorMaje118d ago

I must be one of the few who are fine with the GTA6 delay. People treat that game like it’s the 2nd coming lol.

FIELDMARSHALL_P117d ago

My daughter asked me how I felt about I shrugged and said I don't care gives me time to finish up games I already have. It's all good let them make the best game they can.

RedDevils118d ago

Wish they make another Manhunt or Bully.

gold_drake118d ago

damn, thats a ridiculous number

Dan Houser: RDR2 was "behind schedule" and "over budget so much I didn’t want to think about it"

The world they built is pretty amazing. Unfortunately, the game was mostly boring to me. I definitely had fun in some parts, but it didn't do it for me as a whole like the first one did. I loved RDR so much.

The budgets and time it takes to make games these days is out of control. Such a big risk. If a game isn't a huge hit, it is often it for a studio. Scary. I really miss the PS2 and PS3 days where studeios could make 4 games in a generation and take risks in making something new. And so many were using their own engines. Those were the days.

neutralgamer1992122d ago

Agreed. I love RDR but couldn't get into RDR2. The animations take forever and game slows you down on purpose. It won't let you have fun because R* want us to play the game they want to. I know millions love RDR2 and I even bought and own it. But just wasn't for me.

It's like comparing GTA4 to saints row 2. One game was about fun while the other was about realism and that's coming from someone who beat GTA4 many times. I much rather a game be fun to play than chase realism

YodaCracker122d ago

GTA IV’s realism is what made it so much more fun for me. I loved experimenting with the physics.

Storm23121d ago

I bought RDR2 also. Put 100+ hours into it and beat it our of respect for Rockstar and all the people saying it was the greatest game ever. RDR blew my mind but might also have been the best time in gaming for me personally. l loved that PS3 gen so much.

I am excited to see what GTA6 is like.

I was listening to D Angelo when he debuted in 1995. He had some great songs from that period up in to the early 2000s. He was a talented Neo Soul musician. I never knew his music was in RDR. May he R.I.P.
