Microsoft Updates GFW - Live Client

With all the attention being paid to the vaunted New Xbox Experience interface that will launch later this month for the Xbox 360, Microsoft quietly updated the Games for Windows - Live client today. The update doesn't introduce any new functionality--that is planned later on with the release of a desktop client as well as the Games for Windows - Live Marketplace. However, the update does give the GFW - Live client a whole new look that's better suited for PCs...

Bnet3436372d ago

Why can't they make it so you can have Live on your PC without buying one of their games?

M337ING6372d ago

A separate client will be released soon.

Charmers6372d ago (Edited 6372d ago )

I imagine what you are talking about is the desktop client which will be released later. The update here is just a face lift although I do like the fact they have dumped all the xbox style "push A" I don't have a joypad and it will be a cold day in hell before I attach one to my PC. Other than that there isn't much to be said about the update except it is very erm "blue".

EDIT : I see M337ING beat me too it.

Charlie26886372d ago

Hopefully they will "fix" GFW since I haven't been able to log on not even once with Fallout 3 :S

Charmers6372d ago

I can't say I have had a problem logging into games for windows live with Fallout 3. Maybe you have a firewall or your router is blocking the connection but I am not aware of any problems with people playing Fallout 3 and not being able to log in.

I wish they had added a bit more customisation to this GFWL though, not a big fan of the colour scheme they used and it would have been nice to have the option of altering it to my own preferred tastes. It just seems all a wee bit too basic and unnecessary in my view. But we will see the state of play with GFWL when GTA 4 is released on the PC. That will be the real test of the network.

Charlie26886371d ago

I am having the same problem as Halo 2 were it would log into my profile but when I need to log into LIVE it will go into the "connecting" window and stay there FOREVER to the point that my only option is to click in the cancel button :/

How was Halo 2 fixed?..it randomly decided to connect one day...a month later after I first started playing it -_-

Shaka2K66372d ago

microflop FAIL FAIL FAIL!!!!

cruckel6371d ago

but to compare GFWL to PSN is laughable. It is their futile attempt to encourage PC gamers to interact with 360 gamers. Great concept, but needs more work, a lot more work.

Not that any fanboy would understand, i feel sorry for them in fact. Being so close minded they can't enjoy the best of three system's (four if you count pc's)

TheIneffableBob6371d ago

No, three systems.

Wii has nothing good coming out.

Would be nice if they had New Vegas ready as well, especially because of the show.

Hopefully this doesn't have the same performance issues as Oblivion Remastered.

cloganart105d ago

I haven't seen anything on these performance issues? What's been going on?

walken7104d ago

Probably the Unreal Engine issues, I skipped it for that reason.

Snookies12106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

Throw in all the DLC as well, like Oblivion and I'll definitely bite. I recall having one trophy left to unlock on the PS3 version with 100+ hours in my save. When my save file got corrupted, lol. Very sad day.

To be fair though, Bethesda was trash at Playstation ports anyway.

Michiel1989105d ago

all devs sucked at porting to ps3 for the first like 3 years because no one had experience with the cell architecture. Even 1st party took a long while to get proficient with it, the difference between uncharted 1 and 3 is massive for example.

Extermin8or3_105d ago

Oh oh oh I can do this too. GTA 7 will be made at some point in the future. Fallout 5 will enter development in the future too

jznrpg105d ago

Everyone there should know most gamers want New Vegas and Morrowind more than anything.

Christopher105d ago

Which is why we won't get them. Gotta keep floating "support this one and it might happen".

BlaqMagiq1105d ago

Can't wait. Won't have to go back to my PS3 to play this when it comes out.

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_174d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto174d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay173d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730173d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman169d ago (Edited 169d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty174d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602174d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty174d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981174d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts174d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno174d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE173d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai174d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex173d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover173d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator174d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia174d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

Fallout 3 remastered on the Nintendo Switch 2 is what we deserve, not the worst Fallout game

Fallout Day's disappointing news that Fallout 4 is coming to Switch 2 is a shame, as this 17-year-old entry is more deserving of a new port.

jambola177d ago

Why exactly do you think you deserve it??

Phoenix76177d ago

Fallout 4 isn't the worst game in the franchise. It's either Fallout 76 or Fallout BOS that's the worst.

gigoran8177d ago

PC and all other modern consoles never got a remaster of 3, but obviously the switch 2 was the tipping point to make it a reality... ahuh

1nsomniac177d ago

Meh, I thought 3 was garbage. I'm not a great fan of the franchise to be fair. They're like B-Movie films, really shallow and janky. 4 was definitely one of the better ones though.

UltimateOwnage176d ago

So the article makes a snippy entitled statement and acts like that is going to encourage a publisher to give them what they want. Okay.
