Death Stranding review | Techradar

Death Stranding is a wonderfully ambitious stride in design that combines affecting performances with a compellingly original narrative structure. Its seemingly monotonous premise only further catapults it from ordinary to extraordinary, and its singular sense of self marks it as a distinctly paramount game in this cultural moment.

10,3, 5, 6, 2, 3, 4. YOU GUYS AREN"T HELPING!!

Dirty_Lemons2395d ago (Edited 2395d ago )

I thought that but the majority are very high reviews it seems.

2395d ago
ALMGNOON2395d ago

helping in what ? why are you even listening to reviews, just make your own decision.

NukeDaHippies2395d ago

Oh, shut up. You know dam well that if any game needs an inside opinion going in, it's this one. I've seen 4 trailers for this game and it don't know what to make of it.

While i don't live by reviews, they certainly help me determine whether it's a waste of time or not. Don't pretend you've never used reviews, in the same fashion.

nucky642395d ago

Nuke, i'm not sure the game is for me or if i'm buying right now; but, the majority of reviews seem to love the game.

spaceb0y2395d ago

They are helping in increasing the curiosity though

shauzy2395d ago

the bad reviews came the earliest because i think they wanted to shove the bad review out in public and hadnt had the decency to thoroughly play the game, fucking assholes

2395d ago
imtiyaz62395d ago

That’s absolutely true. These journalists are in such a rush to push reviews out. They play a game until they think they get the feel of it and that’s it. This is not how you review games or anything. Imagine people reviewing movies or music this way. Absolutely ridiculous, hence why I watch this guy called ‘the completionist’ on YouTube. He 100% every game he reviews. IMO best reviewer out there. I didn’t get why Days Gone sold so much despite the bad reviews until I watched his video.

S2Killinit2395d ago (Edited 2395d ago )

There are mostly 9s and 8s. As well as the occasional clickbait 3, 4. Thus the overall average score of 8.4. But yes divisive scores indeed.

From what I've been reading good and bad reviews, I think I'm gonna enjoy it so its OK but I don't think it should be getting 10s? It seems like a lot of walking up and down the mountains with very little combat from start to finish which is fine by me but that ain't no 10/10 formula 7/8/9s not a problem but alot of people are saying it's OK but boring? A boring, slow paced, walking sim with little action is not a 10.
I imagine the 10s are from the hardcore kojima fan but without playing it yet, I think it's gonna sit somewhere between 7.5/8/10 for me

CrimsonWing692395d ago

Do you think movies with no action also shouldn’t get high scores?

Spurg2395d ago

Bad example....movies like that are paced well with the writing. And with a game, it supposes to go hand in hand with the gameplay and design. Death Stranding seems to be exempt from that critic. Kojima's games feel like they are more movie than games and in Death Stranding, Kojima tries to practice what he preaches into the gameplay but, unfortunately, he missed the mark because of the lack of variety and fun.

xX-oldboy-Xx2395d ago

Spurg - You've played it? Seems more people are enjoying it and embracing it's uniqueness than not.

But let's concentrate on the negative shall we.

Anyone that says they like movies but can't watch 2001, Taxi Driver, Lawrence Of Arabia because they're too slow - aren't the sort of people I'd listen too.

Same with DS - it's not your average game, and won't be liked by everyone - and there's nothing wrong with that.

People taking dumps on a new ip they haven't played is what stinks.

Whatever game you like to play, I'm sure they're is at least 2 or 3 games/series that keep you satisfied. Don't you want more? I do.

Death Stranding is that more.

goldwyncq2395d ago

This isn't a movie though.

2395d ago
sprinterboy2395d ago

Don't be a twat. A 2 hour film is alot different to a 50/100 hour game you moron.
Think ffs, plus I said I'm day 1 and it's the type of game I'll enjoy but it ain't gonna be no 10 I can assure you.

bluebenjamin2395d ago

Movies are movies they are to be watched!Games are to be played hence the term gameplay

GTgamer2395d ago

Journey got 10/10 across the board and all you did was walk slide or glide around a empty beautiful world 😂😂😂 and i loved that game so what's your point 🤔

sprinterboy2395d ago

Loved journey too buddy, my point is no game is a 10. No such thing in life as perfect. 9s, 9.2 sure but nothing is perfect.
So what's your point.

cell9892395d ago

@sprinterboy with that level of standards I can’t see you ever getting married. Good luck on the person patient enough to withstand you lol

GTgamer2395d ago

@sprinterboy
That's your opinion 🤔 if I love a game and see no flaws who are you to tell me otherwise 😂😂😂

2395d ago
TheOptimist2394d ago

@GTGamer

I am not here for arguments going on but:
"if I love a game and see no flaws who are you to tell me otherwise"

If you don't see flaws and he's pointing out some things, he's probably just more observant than you.

GamingSinceForever2395d ago

Apparently the gameplay is in the walking itself which sounds different. Much more to it than walking forward while holding down the sprint button.

rainslacker2395d ago

I keep thinking of the game Journey when people say it's a walking Sim. That game had no combat, and no crazy story with weird stuff going on. It's was intriguing and unique, and it drew you in despite the limited game play.

Not all games need to have a lot of action. Not all games where you walk around a lot are walking sims. Sometimes it's about the journey, and what you do during that walking.

I can't say what DS is at this point, I'll find out next weekend when I play it, and then I'll offer up my critique when I feel it prudent.

As of now, I'm only really replying to all these reviews because there seems to be an utter lack of any news or even opinion pieces, and there seems to be a heck of a lot of people who want to tell others they're wrong for still anticipating the game, and expressing how they've made up their mind despite the good reviews. They seem more worried about making sure this is a bad game, than the people anticipating the game are worried about it not being good.

sprinterboy2395d ago

Journey is awesome for sure,

nirwanda2394d ago

Personally my favourite games this gen have been slower paced, I loved what remains of Edith Finch, everybodys gone to rapture and the vanishing of eithan carter.

sprinterboy2394d ago

Everybody's gone to rapture was great, too.
All I'm saying is kojima fans will enjoy it and there will be a split roughly 75/25 in favour of not liking it?. Imo of course I just want to keep gamers hype in check casuee they are all defending it.
I will enjoy I think, but others may not. Basically if you like setting your route and off you go up the mountain to explore and delivers stuff great, cause that's about 40hrs of the game if you don't then your gonna hate it.

Veneno2395d ago

This review says the game is perfect in every way. They even say the monotony is perfect. I hope I can expect such perfection when I pick up the game.

cell9892395d ago (Edited 2395d ago )

One thing we all know by now is Kojima and Perfection are synonymous

2395d ago
Sm00thNinja2395d ago

Yeah MGSV was not perfect and neither is Kojima

2395d ago
rainslacker2395d ago

It was unfinished, but game play was about as close to perfection as you can get....with the exception that you can jump over 5' walls, but can't step up a one foot hill in the desert.

Story was weak, and I think he was stretched thin for ideas, which is likely due to him not wanting to make the game in the first place, but Konami wanting him to do it.

Hideo Kojima put Low Roar in Death Stranding because gamers need more culture in their lives

It's important in life to maintain a broad palette when it comes to culture and the arts. Hideo Kojima agrees, as he continues to use video games like Death Stranding to introduce people to music and other elements they might not otherwise discover.

Cool, as long as no one is losing their job while already rich people make more money.

Notellin219d ago

Exactly this right here. Tools should never replace creators.

DarXyde218d ago

I feel that this is the position of every sensible person. However, we face two prominent issues:

1. There are nefarious actors (like Microsoft) who want to prohibit AI regulation. Some US states have some regulations in place, but it's very patchwork at best.

2. Without strict quality control and human review, AI is very likely to hallucinate in embarrassing ways.

TheEroica218d ago

Lol.... People are gonna be losing their jobs...

Travesty219d ago

I’m all in favor for faster developed games.. that’s been the Achilles heel this gen.. taking 5+ years for development. If it can help with building vast landscapes then let it be. A win win if it doesn’t endanger the jobs of current team. They can help in other areas.

Gamersunite880219d ago

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

H9219d ago

I don't doubt kojima that he has good intentions and would use AI without compromising the creative process, but you know for sure other development will say the same and have AI make the whole game for them.

Notellin219d ago (Edited 219d ago )

Yeah and whoever he works for or whatever AI models he chooses to use will train on his data and work to replace Kojima themselves.

I can't imagine any other creator in gaming that demands the salary size of Kojima.

rlow1219d ago

What I wonder about, let’s say five years from now. Will an individual be able to make a triple A title using A.I…If so what would be the need for others? I hate to say it but eventually people will loose their jobs. Because I hear no talk about the ethics of using A.I. among the big companies.
