BY TIM WHITE: The very first Resident Evil was something almost nobody could conceive of in 1996. It broke new ground and employed a totally original set of mechanics to draw players into its nerve-wracking world. It’s almost always a good thing when game developers try something new, and in Resident Evil’s case, its novelty was a big factor in its tremendous success.
But horror games can certainly be great without completely reinventing the medium. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 refined and improved on the original’s best attributes; to this day, the original Resident Evil 2 remains the fourth-best-selling entry in the entire franchise.
Capcom has announced and released the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 on Steam.
Capcom recently released Resident Evil Requiem, and it's been so successful that it's seemingly dragging along every other Resi game with it.
That's certainly true in the UK; the latest physical retail charts have come in, and the top 10 includes five Resident Evil games across all platforms.
This month, unleash brutal finishers in the reimagined Mortal Kombat 1, swing through Marvel’s New York skyline as the iconic web-slinger in Marvel’s Spider-Man, or gear up to repel swarming alien forces in Earth Defense Force 6. All these titles and more are available in August’s PlayStation Plus Game Catalog lineup. That includes Sword of the Sea, which releases day one into Game Catalog. Meanwhile, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis bring retro survival horror to PlayStation Plus Premium. All titles will be available to play on August 19*.
