The Outer Worlds Highlights Just How Far Fallout Has Fallen

PushSquare: “This week, The Outer Worlds was released. Obsidian's sci-fi role-playing game may not push the genre forward in any radical way, but it is an excellent example of what's possible when player choice is promoted above all else. I'm busy playing through The Outer Worlds for the third time in about as many weeks, and I'm still finding new ways to complete quests and build my character. It's a fantastic RPG.

You know what isn't a fantastic RPG? Fallout 76. In fact, I think it's a terrible RPG. And honestly, I'd rather not think about it at all, because thinking about how bad it is really pisses me off. But this is the problem: I can't escape the seemingly never-ending joke that is Fallout 76.”

Obsidian make far better Fallout-esque games than Bethesda ever could.

I miss the customization of Fallout 3 and 4. I've put a day or two into Outer Worlds and so far it seems like there are only a few different types of armor and you can't color them to your liking. There are a handful of helmets, but nowhere near what Fallout has as far as variety. I also miss the building in Fallout 4, which I didn't think I would. The ship is a nice touch, but again, it lacks customization. Perhaps these things will open up more as I play, but so far I haven't seen much to really make my character, my ship or my crew "my own".

In a lot of ways The Outer Worlds reminds me of Knights of the Old Republic more than a Fallout game or even Obsidian's old D&D RPGs. I suppose their experience with The Sith Lords is the reason. I see a little bit of humor here and there and a lot of reading on computer terminals but that is about as close as this gets to Fallout in my opinion. The rest feels like Borderlands crossed with KotOR without the humor of Borderlands or the dated combat of KotOR. A solid game, in my opinion, just not very Fallout to me, but then I honestly did not like New Vegas because it dragged on and on with boring quests in the beginning and I got bored with it.

MrCrimson2410d ago

Obisidian made KOTOR too.

Elwenil2410d ago

@MrCrimson,

Bioware made KotOR, Obsidian made KotOR: The Sith Lords.

Kind of sad that after the initial reviews, within the media lot of the exposure for this game is always done as a way to bring down Fallout and Bethesda.

About all i hear is how is that it's a good version of Fallout. But, I know there is more to this game than that, and I don't see a lot of discussion about what's really good within the game. I look at games that get a lot of criticism but aren't compared to other games so much, and if they are good games, you get a lot of people saying what they like about it. With this, it's just, "It's not Bethesda or Fallout". That doesn't make it a good game, because many games are better than Fallout and many pubs/devs are better than what was done with FO76.

Father__Merrin2410d ago

both completely different games, FA76 is becoming like no mans sky where people hate it even though they havent played it properly. imo it plays fine and is great as a coop online fallout game

RpgSama2410d ago

Fallout 76 sucks and Bethesda Sucks, not a matter of opinion.

UnHoly_One2409d ago

Actually that is EXACTLY the definition of opinion.

Fallout 76 is awful but Bethesda is still amazing. <---- See, I have one too.

RpgSama2409d ago

@UnHoly_One

Bethesda became trash this generation, they are right up there with 2K, EA, Activision and Ubisoft, just trash companies with absolutely no consideration for the end user, you are just a statistic for them, someone to abuse, that's it.

esemce2410d ago

Ya muvva sucks cucks in hell.

rdgneoz32410d ago

No Man's Sky has had a lot of free content thrown at it and has made a ton of fans as a result. They've added a ton to it for free over time. FO76 now has paid severs that have "infinite scrap box" included on them, which actually destroys the scrap. FO76 is a dumpster fire in comparison to No Man's Sky.

Does anyone give free private servers in an open world game

No mans sky devs had absolutely NOT designed from inception to milk gamers with a sub par, empty, broken and nothing like its predecessors game and certainly did not go forward with that anti-consumer mentality knowing customers would forgive them as always.

Then we have Fallout .!.st...

Fallout 76 and NMS should never be put in the same sentence.

Bethesda as a developer haven't grown for years now. They're stuck in their old ways and absolutely refuse to mature with the times.
When you think that outside of a rehash of Skyrim and Skyrim again but VR, All they've given us this gen is Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76... That's a bad list and makes you realise they squandered an entire generation.

As a production company they've been fantastic

I'm enjoying playing Outer Worlds, but I feel like it's missing a lot while i'm running around. Extra bits and pieces that were left behind, joining factions, ranks, player/npc relationship levels... and one thing that has started to annoy me is the gear appearance. All the gear looks exactly the same with different colors and logos.

I think it's important to note that the budget for the Outer Worlds is pretty far from most AAA games, i agree it seems like it just doesn't have a lot of that soft padding that makes you wanna spend every waking minute in the world, that it's very competent and everything has a clear purpose, feeling much like an older, more traditional rpg.
