Microtransactions Aren't Going Anywhere (So We Better Get Used To It)

A category of gaming that used to be relegated to the world of mobile games, free-to-play titles with microtransactions are common on all platforms.

People like these aren't going anywhere. So if they are compromising, we should compromise too.

How about no.

UltraNova2416d ago

Yep, I got pretty used to... ignoring MTs all together.

2416d ago
UltraNova2416d ago

@Oath

I don't see it [not buying MT] as an achievement. I rarely buy additional content for a game unless I seriously like it and wish to support the dev. The only pieces of DLC I've bought this gen are for Dark Souls 3 (the two expansions).

I seriously dont care about paid skins, mods or any other MTs whatsoever.

-Foxtrot2415d ago

Yeah people like this are part of the problem

Lubing themselves up now before big daddy EA or Ubisoft even come home with their pants down

badz1492415d ago

thegamer.com??

better change that to thecuck.com because that's what they are suggesting right now

hellztourguide4202415d ago

Right? At the risk of sounding insensitive, it's like saying racism isn't going anywhere, so we might as well get used to it 🤷‍♂️. Complete BS.

I challenge every gamer out there not to buy MTs (not even cosmetics) for 6 months, watch what happens.

UltraNova2416d ago

You lost that challenge before it already began.

victorMaje2416d ago

Hah true, but I have to try :)
If only they could see, I mean 6 months, against years of better quality gaming...

ThinkThink2415d ago

Serious question for everyone here.. What do you really think would happen after 6 months of nobody buying MT's, besides a few of the smaller studios closing? Do you think game companies will just turn over and say ok.. well, we tried, so I guess we'll just raise the base price of all games by $10-15?

I would much rather have optional and cosmetic micro-transactions in a game, than being forced to pay an extra $10-15 dollars for a game.

No Way2415d ago

ThinkThink - It wouldn't really mattered if they raised prices. People would just buy used or wait for price drops..

NapalmSanctuary2415d ago

@ThinkThink
Large publishers don't mandate MTs because they are financially forced to. They do it because they view not doing it as leaving money on the table. If MTs weren't making money, they wouldn't be worth the time and expense of setting up. And even they know that if they raise the base price of games, that demand for those games will naturally decline.

$60 is the sweet spot for AAA games (meaning that lowering the price isn't going to increase demand enough to balance out lost dollars per copy sold and raising the price will drive demand down too sharply for the increase in dollars per copy to compensate for). If it wasn't, they'd have already tried to raise the price, even with MTs already in the game. MTs and Base AAA game prices have nothing to do with each other.

UltraNova2415d ago (Edited 2415d ago )

Think think,

Smaller studios closing: Do you mean independent studios or studios within big publishers?

*Indies dont do predatory MTs.

Companies will not be forced into anything since 6 months is nothing for them + they'll still get paid for the base game. The only thing we might gain out such a stance( still not happening since whales and casuals don't give a f*** about "righteous causes") is the temporary reduction in predatory MTs, like pay to win and progression/balance altering bullshit.

Raising the base price instead of MTs: Not happening. MTs are far far more lucrative than any base price increase. Pubs know they'll lose money if they increase the base price and make much more with MTs over an extended period of time.

"I would much rather have optional and cosmetic micro-transactions in a game, than being forced to pay an extra $10-15 dollars for a game."

This is such a correct and wrong statement to make. The idea is ok, albeit naive, but its not happening. "Normal" MTs are not that lucrative so they'll always make them predatory to increase their sales. While raising the base price would imply pubs making a fully complete, bug free experience from the get go(the naive part)....well we all know those times are long gone(there are a couple, far between, exceptions of course).

So that leaves us with the only way pubs will listen; total abandonment of their products to the point they'll be forced to make full games again and stay away from anything other than cosmetic MTs. Something that will never happen again. This is it going forward the damage is done. You pick your poison and hope for the best.

Personally speaking, as long as the are Publishers who make the games the way I like them, (complete and polished from the get go) I'll support them by buying them.

I can say I've never bought a single one! I've even stopped buying games that I know will have them, I get more enjoyment knowing I'm supporting developers that bring out real games and that I'm supporting a developer that I respect.

CrimsonPheonix2415d ago

Same, whats so hard about not buying them. The games that include them are soulless trash anyway.

franwex2415d ago

I’ve never bought one before, wtf.
But now that you have pretty much stated that you have let me ask you a question.

What made you buy?

I’m truly curious as to what makes someone buy something like that. It’s your hard earned money, you can spend it however you like. I’m curious as to what the allure of an MT is, since many times it’s random stuff, or virtual currency that only works with 1 game.

lodossrage2415d ago

@victorMaje

I WISH people would do that. But the problem is people are slaves to gaming and these companies know that.

NapalmSanctuary2415d ago

Besides fighting games, I rarely even play games with MTs. I only do the DLC when its a proper expansion like Project Nimbus: Rise Mirai (it literally doubled the size of the game).

Casual gamers destroying the industry.

ThinkThink2415d ago

They are also the only reason the industry still exists. Without them, the industry collapses.

Zombieburger6382415d ago

Id rather the AAA industry die than continue down this path. I could survive with indies for a long time, many great games that focus on gameplay over microtransactions. Imagine an era with new AAA games that rival uncharted, the old halos, old gears, and RDR1.

badz1492415d ago

@ThinkThink

hahahahaha

NapalmSanctuary2415d ago

If that were true, developers like Fromsoft (Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Armored Core) wouldn't be able to currently exist. Without the super casuals, the games industry would be much more stable. It'll just be the stupidly over extended, overly focused on the casual market publishers and developers that collapse, and that's just because they no longer know how to serve a market made up of mostly core players.

milohighclub2415d ago (Edited 2415d ago )

It was doing just fine without casuals or mictotransactions.

Hungryalpaca2415d ago

That’s not even remotely true.

Thank nintendo for reeling them in with the wii

SlagWolf2415d ago

I really don’t buy AAA games much any more so it’s fine by me. Only one I bought this year was RE2 remake. I’m perfectly happy with Indies these days. Made by people with passion for there game and not how can I milk every one I can dry with my pretty looking but devoid of any soul or substance game

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
