Google Stadia Is On A Collision Course With Broadband Caps, Study Shows

Many gamers don’t even know they have a broadband cap. That’s about to change.

Platformgamer2430d ago

google stadia needs to die on arrival

ILostMyMind2430d ago

No, it needs to impact and bring about political change.

william_cade2430d ago

not sure why you don't have a like. I got a good laugh.

Your comment and the upvotes in it are the finished example of the problem that plagues the gamerz. They confuse what they want with the real world. Streaming is the future of games, whether for good or bad. It is a better form of business for companies than the current model. And they will impose this model anyway as a steamroller. To think that Google, Microsoft and Apple are looking at today's market is an innocence. This is capitalism and capitalism needs constant growth.

Platformgamer2430d ago

streaming is not the future of games, like 3D wasn't the future for movies for example.
a possible future can be erased if we all do our part, let's do that shall we?
semi off topic, let's also kill call of duty please ahah

IMissJimRyan2430d ago

Keep dreaming that control is in your hands ...

SephirothX212430d ago

Unfortunately people here are idiots and the only thing that goes through their mind is that their console of choice is superior to everything else. I work on a streaming project currently. It is the future beyond question because it solves a lot of problems. Storage, piracy, download times, accessibility, portability and hardware upgrades. The only thing in it's way is broadband speeds and these will improve and 5g will roll out in the coming years too. Some people are childish and like the idea of a physical shiny console in their home. Well grow the hell up!

Mopedgames2430d ago

The flip side is capitalism also means that if people don't buy it and continue to support the traditional model the loss of money will force them to change their plans.

Just because this is what they want doesn't mean it will succeed.

ShadowWolf7122430d ago

So in your mind, we have to accept that instead of push back on it?

You're aware one of the key aspects of Capitalism is DEMAND, yes? If there's not sufficient demand for this, then it will die. It will not "kill" or "cripple" Capitalism for that to happen. In fact, that is Capitalism in action.

What you're referring to is Corporatism fused with Consumerism.

It's why FMV games died. It's why the CD-i failed. It's why VR is only just now getting to a point where it can take off. There was no demand.

indysurfn2430d ago (Edited 2430d ago )

@locomorales Gamers make their OWN future with their mouths and wallet. Keep being defeated and a sellout preaching that we can't buy what we want. Preaching that we don't have the power.

Keep being a Defeated sellout minion.

Keep preaching discouragement!

Keep being a fool.

Keep being LOCO with your morals.
TELL THAT TO EA and their forced KOTOR MT's. They lost 3 billion dollars market value PERMANTLY!

IMissJimRyan2430d ago

Guys, you don't need to convince me. I can see what's happening with the industry. Similar situations happened with food, comunications, sports, movies, TV, drugs, Banks and so on.

We have an illusion of choice. I think streaming is as bad as the other guy. But i'm not delusional. I know that in 10 to 15 years we will be choosing between Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple or any other company what service of streaming ill have.

Streaming is good for those companies. It puts their property under total control. No more piracy, no more used games, no more play without pay. If you look you understand that those already agreed on that. And when multibillion dollars companies agree about something, is just a matter of time to them override any past.

2430d ago
rainslacker2429d ago (Edited 2429d ago )

OK. So, let me get this straight.

People disagreed because they don't want streaming.
You say that streaming is the future and that those people above who agreed are confused.
You think those same people are the problem with gaming.

I'm wondering....do you think it's more a problem that as consumers, we should just accept whatever the apparent future is, instead of actually saying, as consumers, what it is we want?

Sorry, but I don't think it's the people agreeing that are the problem with gaming. I think it's people who just accept whatever fate companies want to throw at them, and think that there is nothing they can do about it.

I'll often talk about how the industry is a business, and what it needs to do and justify some of their actions which people may not agree with. But, I also think that as consumers, we don't just have to accept whatever they want to throw at us to try and force their ideal.

Streaming isn't going to fail. But it's not going to take over the traditional gaming anytime soon. Saying it is is about akin to saying that mobile was the future, or that digital distribution is the future. Both are successful. Both have their place. Traditional gaming continues to grow, helped along by those things.

You remember when MS wanted to bring their future with the launch of the X1? The same thing that EA had been preaching for some time before, and Ubisoft and Activision were vocal on how they wanted to control a market they didn't have control of? Do you remember what the consumer did?

I do. They pushed back. They forced MS hand, and MS had to capitulate in order to not fail completely. They took away MS(and EA's) power to force their future against the will of the consumer. Consumers aren't powerless, and never should the consumer just accept a future they don't want. Streaming isn't anywhere near as bad as what MS tried to do, and it can be a fine supplimental product, or a primary one depending on people's needs. Stadia's business model is flawed though, and it probably will fail the same way Sony didn't do so great with PSNow when they had an overpriced model. Difference is, Google isn't known to keep trying for the long term.

ramiuk12429d ago

streaming the future? ye maybe in about 15-20 years lol.
look at caps in america for one and its 2019!!!!!!
latency has killed stadia before launch

Stadia dies on arrivial confirmed

b163o12430d ago

I ordered, and canceled in the same day...

Teflon022430d ago

I want the control, since it has the PS4 layout. for the sticks, but I can get the button prompts from steam lol. Since not all games got PS4 prompts. Also would be nice to use a different control for all my consoles lol. Otherwise, I have no interest in stadia

specialguest2430d ago

Wheres the N4G residential Google Stadia defender justchilliando and _LarZen_ at?? Lol.

Let's see how they'll defend this crippling problem

TheScotsman2430d ago

Doesn't work at weekends coz he blows all his data during the week on stadia

Mopedgames2430d ago (Edited 2430d ago )

It's not just caps, almost all ISP that claim they don't have caps will throttle your connection down till streaming doesn't work.

UltraNova2429d ago

This. Caps are 50% of the problem, the other half is throttling which is in a way worse, especially for people who pay for higher tiers(4K streams etc) since once your speed is reduced to a crawl you'll either be playing at the lowest quality or not a all.

If MS, Google and Sony ever hope for this streaming thing to succeed first they need to have serious chat with ISPs.

MasterCornholio2430d ago

Caps are a steaming service worse enemy. Oh and that horrible input lag.

rainslacker2429d ago

Thank God net neutrality isn't a thing anymore though. Now the consumer doesn't have to pay more up front, but instead, the ISP's can go to Google and try and get a big sum from them to not throttle their data, or hold their bandwidth hostage to Google's needs once the data leaves their precious back end lines they're using to try and say will make things faster.

NeoGamer2322430d ago

30 Years ago the Internet wasn't even used by the public really....

Then, 20-25 years ago web pages were text only...

Then, came pictures...

Then, came music streaming...

Then, came multiplayer games...

Then came movie streaming...

Then, came 100 GB game downloads...

And now we are in the era of streaming games...

Each time cap limits were in existence and each time they evolved to the changing needs. With 5G and even faster land line internet speeds this to will just be a note in the historic evolution of the Internet. 5 years from now people will be onto the next big thing.

sprinterboy2430d ago

Agreed but I will say 10 years for the hardcore gamer to get on board.
It'll be just OK for the casual gamer who doesn't really care but it'll be a thing for sure.
Personally for me nxt gen I'm ps5 and switch pro (yes it's coming) will come and go as I please with gamepass on pc (probably 2 or 3 mths each year) same for psnow and ea access and same for Google stadia.
Jus tpick my months as I please.

indysurfn2430d ago (Edited 2430d ago )

I found one thing I agree with you on SWITCH PRO is coming (but it may not have a screen).

rainslacker2430d ago

The problem is that the needs are outpacing the infrastructure. 5G isnt going to magically make petabytes of bandwidth available to the masses. Bamdwidth still has to exist within the limits of the limits of what is physically possible within its design, and with all the things now available to the user in real time, it's just too much to keep up

NeoGamer2322430d ago

Yup, and video cards are not outpacing gamer wants, processors are not outpacing gamer wants, memory speed and size is not out pacing gamer wants.

Games still don't have enough of everything yet they people buy them.

5G won't solve all problems, but for streaming it probably will solve most as we currently know things.

rainslacker2429d ago

5G won't solve the bandwidth problems. All data sent throughout the world is regulated by governing authorities. Every part of the line is given a specific amount of bandwidth to use within the overall bandwidth, and ISP's pay for access to the larger internet infrastructure. Google provides some of it's own lines, and on those lines, they do get the totalality of whatever bandwidth it affords them. But those lines can only run data on specific bandwidths, as regulated by the government, which limits its full capabilities.

5G is going to open up more bandwidth, but these streaming services are expanding faster than the infrastructure, and despite how much people talk about 5G being the saving grace of the future, they don't put into realistic terms the amount of time it will take to really start being used by the mainstream. Just like 3G and 4G, which was mostly just for cell phones, it's going to take time for ISP's to adapt and start utilizing these services, and even longer for consumers to use it to a point where it would make a difference in what's being talked about here.

More related to the topic though, having 5G does not mean that ISP's won't still limit bandwidth, or impose data caps. If they can charge for such things, they will. They have been for years, so why would anyone assume things would be different?

Mopedgames2430d ago

You fail to understand that there is whole groups of other industries that that stand to lose major money by this. What about the whole consumer PC and other industries.

I think the premise that just because these big companies want it that it's going to succeed, it's not up to them, it's up to the consumers.

Streaming will ALWAYS ALWAYS be inferior to playing games locally.

kneon2430d ago

The consumer PC business has been in decline for years, nothing will stop it. Most people get along just fine now with a phone or tablet. Consumer PCs will end up being primarily a gaming PC business as the other traditional uses have moved to other platforms.

2430d ago
Sirk7x2430d ago

Streaming is inferior, this is very true. Mp3s are also very inferior to analog audio and FLAC, but most people don't care. The question is whether or not it will catch on with mainstream audiences. They want money, not the adoration of core gamers like you see on sites like this one. They're probably honestly hoping more casuals sign up for their service. They still get the money, and have to stream far less when they hardly ever use it.

NeoGamer2322430d ago

People have to quit look at you either stream or you play locally, or you do console, or mobile, or pc...

The successful formula is AND... I should be able to download locally and I should be able to stream, I should be able to play between my console, mobile, and pc seamlessly. It is not about choosing one way to play, it is about having options based on the situation.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio39d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing39d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9239d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit39d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing39d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9239d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
