Will Developers Bother With The Playstation 5's New Controller Features?

Yesterday Jim Ryan, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirmed the release window of the Playstation 5 as holiday 2020. At the same time, Playstation 5 System Architect, Mark Cerny, talked with WIRED about the hardware in the new console, and the new controller. The article covered the many different aspects of the controller, and how it can deepen the immersion of the player, but my concern is that developers won't take advantage of these new features, because they didn't for the Playstation 4.

"In the WIRED article it is discussed how the rumble motors are gone from the Playstation 5’s controller instead Sony has opted to use voice-coil actuators,"

Very, very curious about this. Sounds really cool but it may end up as useless as the touchpad was. I really hope devs do take advantage of every feature especially for the triple A games from the big developers.

Neonridr2467d ago

Obviously every game isn't going to utilize these features and some games will benefit more than others. It's definitely one of those "cool to have" features, even if they don't get used super often.

I can actually see these things being utilized more by PSVR games, since they will really bump up the realism.

gangsta_red2467d ago

Obviously, I'm not saying every dev will. But for the big games, CoD, Assassin's Creed, etc, I hope. Even though they're multiplatform games and those devs may not want to spend time trying to make one more unique than the other.

This may just be a feature that's limited to Sony's first party games.

But still, I want to see how this will work.

Neonridr2467d ago (Edited 2467d ago )

@gangsta - I can see the benefits but also some drawbacks. Say for example they decide to implement resistance for gun triggers. Will there be a certain level of fatigue that sets in if everytime you go to pull the trigger there is a resistance set in there to mimic real life? Will our fingers cramp up because of the extra force required for depressing?

But it's definitely cool to see and I will be intrigued to see how devs utilize it (if at all).

It's being used as the main rumble feature for the controller, devs will have to use it if they want any kind of feedback for the player, it's nothing like the touch pad at all.

"It also boasts haptic feedback far more capable than the rumble motor console gamers are used to, with highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller."

What's got me excited though is that you are going to feel stuff with the sticks too

"I ran a character through a platform level featuring a number of different surfaces, all of which gave distinct—and surprisingly immersive—tactile experiences. Sand felt slow and sloggy; mud felt slow and soggy. On ice, a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding. Jumping into a pool, I got a sense of the resistance of the water; on a wooden bridge, a bouncy sensation."

it is the evolution of the haptic feedback in the xbo. Theirs was in the triggers (and very well implemented in driving games) while sony is adapting it for the whole controller (and MS will likely be doing the same for theirs). All we know is Immersion will no longer be getting any $$ from Sony (or MS) for their "rumble" tech.

IRetrouk2467d ago (Edited 2467d ago )

Im aware the xbox pad has haptic feedback for the triggers, Haptic feedback has been about for a while now, what sony is doing is not an evolution of what ms done at all, for a start the triggers are adaptive, nothing like haptic triggers, and having haptics for the main rumble of the controller and feeling it through the sticks is also much more than just having it in the triggers. I'm almost positive ms have plans to implement the same stuff, I'm sure they have filed a patent for such.

voice coils are what in the home theater business are called bass shakers. essentially a speaker driver without the cone.

sampsonon2466d ago

most of the games I've played used the touch pad.
so i haven't a clue as to what it is you're saying.

gangsta_red2466d ago

Every game used the touch pad but not all of the what it was intended for. It has become a glorified menu/map button.

sampsonon2466d ago

@gangsta_red games used it for a lot more than that. and yes maps as well.
it was still useful.

UnholyLight2466d ago

I would really like to see more utilization, I actually really liked the touchpad on PS4 and would have liked to have seen it utilized more. I think developers should think outside the box and be more innovative and if Sony wants to provide the opportunity to do this, then the support should be there!!

GG is going hard at work on a certain game that centres around the use of Bow & Arrow/Crossbow, that will blow people away - like the first game did.

What about devs using the haptic feature on the trigger buttons to simulate various guns.

Rumble is old and has had its day, I still use it - but an evolution of that concept is welcomed.

Ausbo2467d ago

Hopefully devs will. Microsoft’s rumble triggers are underused in current games.

Hopefully both Microsoft and Sony use similar tech so that devs will be forced to implement it due to the install base of both combined

jukins2467d ago

I expect alot of launch window games to force it into the gameplay as far haptic feedback and triggers go. But as we move along the gen I'm sure we will get some crazy innovative uses out of it

I just hope they're reliable. The resistant triggers scares me as far as durability goes. And a replacement is probably gonna be at least $70-80 this gen

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio73d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing73d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9273d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit73d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing73d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9273d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
