What should Microsoft call the next Xbox?

The next phase of the unending console wars is starting to heat up, with Sony announcing that the successor to the PlayStation 4 will, predictably, be called the PlayStation 5.

But the news got us wondering: what will Microsoft call its next-generation Xbox console, which is currently using codename “Project Scarlett”? Unlike Sony, which tends to stick to strictly utilitarian names for its consoles — PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, with a few self-explanatory “Slim” or “Pro” variants thrown in — Microsoft has tended toward what we’ll call... creative branding.

I say go back to basics and call it Xbox.

Relientk772421d ago

Yeah, because Xbox One and the original Xbox isn't confusing enough. Let's add more confusion.

gangsta_red2421d ago (Edited 2421d ago )

Yeah, because the original Xbox released 20? years ago and has been discontinued and the Xbox One were both in the retail stores, selling at the same time and confused everyone who tried to buy the Xbox One.

Relientk772421d ago

@2pacalypsenow

Exactly lol, and gangsta wants the 4th and 1st consoles to have the same name.

Xbox, the 1st console
Xbox One, the 3rd console (not the 1st)
Xbox, which would be the 4th console, and same name as the first console...

gangsta_red2421d ago

"Xbox, which would be the 4th console, and same name as the first console..."

Oh no!

Tell you what, since it may cause panic in the streets how about I call it Xbox New, or Xbox N. There, *phew* , i can only imagine mothers throwing their babies out the window because they accidentally bought an OG Xbox at the back ally Mogwai shop and not the brand new shiny one that would be available everywhere.

UltraNova2420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

Whatever they end up calling the next xbox I have a feeling it will have something to do with the emphasis on live services. We'll know soon enough.

Xbox Connect?

kreate2420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

Why can't it just be Xbox Scarlett?

Edit: or Xbox 4.. or Xbox 2 ... they should also stop w all the multiple consoles in a single generation.

I kinda don't want to hear a Xbox One F or Xbox One Z or some stupid crap like that.

darthv722420d ago

XBOX XX (roman numeral for 20). It is 20 times more powerful than the og. It is near the 20th anniversary of the og. And it comes out in 2020.

?????

MasterCornholio2420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

@Ultra

Sounds to close to Xbox Kinect to me.

@Darth

Xbox Sex comes to mind when I read that. I don't think that's a good idea either.

darthv722420d ago

@cornhol... that would be Xbox "XXX" bro

2420d ago
blackbeld2420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

What should Microsoft call the next Xbox?

Ahum..

Let’s call it Xbox one again! Or XBox One X :)

2420d ago
umair_s512420d ago

Xbox 2 because they will be in second place 😂

soulrebel2420d ago

You'd actually be confused? One of them came out in 2001. Would you accidentally buy that one? How?! Everyone calls it 'the original Xbox; anyway. No one would care after a few weeks. Xbox is a far stronger brand than 'One', '360' or 'Infinite' or some other sh*te. It works for laptops, cars and loads of other tech.
I don't believe it would actually confuse you....

ilikestuff2420d ago

It’s the fourth Xbox, they should call it Xbox 2. Its obvious

Chocoburger2420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

Its so horribly annoying doing Google Searches for "Xbox" and to get Xbox One searches instead. You have to type "Original Xbox" these days to avoid confusion, and even then it doesn't always give you the search results you want.
The whole naming scheme has been stupid for years now. Just freakin' call it XBOX 4 and be logical about it! MS needs to stop worrying about a Sony game machine having 1 number higher than theirs. No one cares!

rainslacker2420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

Always fun when trying to look up historical information on the original Xbox. It's already a pain enough now since the Xbox precursor is never not part of the name listed in headlines.

Anyways. doesn't really matter much what they call it. People that want one will know what it is. Everyone else won't care, and will probably mock the name anyways.

@Gangsta

How about, "Xbox X" Would keep in line with their Win10 naming.

fr0sty2420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

They already called it Xbox again with Xbox One X... which when abbreviated is XBO:X

So, if we go:
Xbox
Xbox 360 (the name implies trying to put a square peg/box in a round hole, lol)
Xbo:X
now we're back to X's, boxes, and something circular or round... Xbox sphere?

outsider16242419d ago

I was thinking why not just name Xbox V. You know, in line with Ps5.
They can just say the XboxX is the 4th console, I don't know. Remove the confusion.
Xbox (first console)
Xbox360(second)
Xboxone(third)
XboxX(fourth?)
Xbox V(fifth)
And it's actually fixed now. From now on their future consoles will be easy .6,7,8 etc..

Cant believe Im saying this but I agree with red, I feel really dirty now.

gangsta_red2420d ago

That's because I'm hella sexy.

Tech52420d ago

when it comes to guessing the names for the next xbox no one is correct.

RedDevils2419d ago

They screw up with name since they named it the 360, should called it simple like Playstartion 1,2,3,4,5. Or go with a different name like Nintendo with their console, Super nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii, WiiU and Switch all different names.

fiveby92419d ago

Well I can't say I agree with red but at least he's funny.

I'm gonna bet on Xbox Infinite

AngelicIceDiamond2421d ago (Edited 2421d ago )

People tried that name before the X1 released. Xbox Next has been said as well. One thing I learned is the name usually comes from whatever MS is trying push for the console. "Xbox" What's an Xbox? Or Direct Xbox was named after MS API Direct X Built in hard drive, online play and higher performing games a computer console if you will. "Xbox 360" A "Future proof" console with emphasis on HD content and a adaptable console that's seen as the "full package" with yearly OS updates to keep up with trends in tech, a console that's balanced with power and features. "Xbox One" All in one console focusing on hands free navigation Kinect. DRM with 100% digital library. Lower input on actual graphic output and the first console to not focus purely on graphics.

"Xbox One X" Everything the console promotes with large emphasis on power and 4k with better performing 3rd party games. The "X" Is the "It factor" or the, well "X factor" that secret sauce type of feel to it. With all that being said the name of the next Xbox will once again focus on power. I dunno, Xbox "dunamis" maybe Xbox Exousia or "Xbox Xousia." Dunamis meaning strong, powerful. Exousia can mean rising up stronger, or dominion through redemption. Though the term has several different interpretations. Just doing this for fun those names aren't marketable and hard to say lol wanna play some Dunamis? Or Xousia? Maybe Xbox XXX. Again just for fun.

darthv722420d ago

Would be suitable with Halo Infinite coming. And then they could have Gears Infinite and a Forza Infinite. Just like the "Super" trend for the Super NES or the "64" trend for the N64.

bluefox7552420d ago

Hope not, that's pretty cringe.

NiteX2420d ago

I mean every Xbox name is pretty cringe.... so why not?

Relientk772421d ago

Xbox Scarlett Johansson

I'm super cereal.

Psychotica2420d ago

What kind of cereal are you? Captain Crunch or Raisin Bran?

2420d ago
Psychotica2420d ago

@ndonnine@ oh..ok. lol..

Ristul2420d ago

And the console will be the shape of SJ butt.

SegaGamer2421d ago

They kind of messed themselves up with the Xbox One's name. When it comes to names, they can't really come up with anything now without making themselves look stupid. When you advertise your system as the all-in-one games and entertainment system.......well, where do you go from there?

gangsta_red2421d ago (Edited 2421d ago )

I disagree, Xbox Prime, Xbox Evolution, Xbox Alpha, I think a team of marketing can up with something even better than what I just did off the top of my head.

I think anyone can add a name to anything without having to worry about what was advertised for it before.

I mean PS3 had "it only does everything" and yet PS4 had "greatness awaits". Hard to top a system that was marketed as doing everything and yet it was done.

ThinkThink2421d ago

I can see Xbox Evo as a name but I seriously prefer just calling it the new Xbox. If they release a mid gen refresh, it could just be called the Xbox Elite. While I appreciate the thought and fun that goes into a name, to me, it has always just been "Xbox".

gangsta_red2421d ago

Xbox Evo wouldn't be nice. But I'm definitely on board with just calling it Xbox as I always say it too when talking about the console.

AngelicIceDiamond2420d ago

Xbox Prime will get it mixed up with Amazon Prime. Xbox Evolve is good, though we know Xbox as a console its general make up or DNA, its main selling feature is its quick ability to change, evolve and add things.Year one Xbox OS is always drastically different than year 2 OS.

Since both companies aren't being shy at least when it comes to how they want to present their consoles as powerhouses they could have similar slogans.

XabiDaChosenOne2420d ago

All of those sound like mid gen refresh names or something a teenager would come up with. Xbox soiled themselves as far as brand recognition for their consoles.

hanko142420d ago (Edited 2420d ago )

ThinkThink xbox elite is already been use on the 360

RedDevils2419d ago

Just call it the Loot Box lol

SheenuTheLegend2419d ago

xbox alpha? what about xbox beta bro?

@Sega Well in this day and age all of your favorite entertainment and media functions are integrated into to Tv's, phones and Tablets. Xbox One is a rather outdated philosophy now in fact the the 360 still does half those functions and it released in the HD era in 05. This day in age its about cloud and game streaming. Scarlet will do everything the X1 will do standard (minus Kinect)

I agree with the fact that MS named their machines Xbox and numerics don't make sense for Xbox like its does PS. 360, X1 or the One, X1X all easy to say therefor its marketable. Honestly they should call it simply Xbox X. Its not all in one because that's standard and very outdated and MS focused on power again this time around.

rainslacker2420d ago

I could understand why they went with the 360. Didn't want to appear way behind the PlayStation by being a number behind. And, 360 kind of made sense with the advancements of 3D graphics during that era.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle26d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay27d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn228d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn227d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown28d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay27d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay27d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac27d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger28d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300028d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde28d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde27d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
