Is PSVR Still Worth It?

With so many other high powered headsets on the virtual reality market now, is Sony's PSVR really worth the investment?

It still works with PS5 which will bring more impressive VR games that PC has had for a while now. So I think it is.

Forward Compatibility with the ps5 will be crucial to PSVR's future. Now I don't know what Sony's plans are for PSVR but they shouldn't hurry releasing v2.0 if they wont be able to offer something truly impressive (for its price of course); namely a wireless HMD, at least 2K @ 120fps per eye and minimal if not absent screen door effect. The games we know are going to be there.

Shaggy,

You have the same reaction as many did way back when I said the ps5 will have an SSD...

Guess I was right after all.

If they want to cement VRs future they need to impress, at their own cost. I firmly believe that 2K@120fps is the quality threashold needed for universal appraisal and therefore positive word of mouth.

@ultra

Id buy even if it was just a slight bump in rez but was wireless.

The ability to just slip it on and play is much more appealing then pixels lower than looking clearer.

we've had trouble reaching 1080p @60fps this gen,

(2k @ 120fps) times 2, sounds like something for PS6, unless you lower the graphical quality by an substantial amount.

Based on what we know about Ryzen and Navi so far they'll offer at least double the ps4 Pro's power output. So there's that. Also PSVR already displays games at 90-120fps with reprojection(granted, this software needs to be matured a lot) but increases ghosting.

I know 2K @120 fps sounds very optimistic but if they could make consoles with latest gen SoCs and SSDs to boot then surely they can aim for the aforementioned VR specs 2-3 years down the line.

Silly intro for the article, if you have a PS4 and don't have a gaming PC, then what use are those other VR headsets.

PSVR is worth it for those who want a solid VR experience at a more entry-level price, and have a PS4 as their only or primary gaming platform.

I personally had my PSVR, but I sold it to wait for the next iteration when the PS5 comes out to see if they find a way to improve motion in game such as walking around with a traditional controller instead of teleporting. That eing said I enjoyed it while I had it, and had some decent - good experiences.

The question is, is it worth buying a $100 - $300 (used/new/camera/controllers) peripheral that plays a select group of games on your PS4, for an experience that doesn't exist on other consoles. My experience, it's great for the first few months, but then the magic wears off slightly still being enjoyable when you find something that really works, but not the ideal way to play most experiences currently.

Then there are the psychological experiences, where some people don't like being cut off from the world with a VR headset over their head, motion sickness, etc...

If you want to try it out go to GameStop or BestBuy for a week and play the games there, and see if it's for you. I would caution a full purchase right now, however, considering PSVR is likely to carry over to the PS5 with the potential for a better headset and that would be the version I'd recommend.

I do enjoy my VR, but I've not touched it in ages as it's a pain.

Wireless headset imo should be the focus, then again if I can plug my VR into my PS5 with no breakout box needed that would be a huge plus and may push me to use it more.

Imo PSVR games can be brilliant and I have no regrets in buying or owning one.

Edit: If Sony really want to help VR buying a few studios that make VR games could help.

UltraNova2423d ago

Thing is they have so many VR games out by now and more are coming. I thing the hussle of connecting it on the console and its clunkiness combined with its admittedly low visual and tracking quality its what's holding back PSVR v1.0.

Mr_Writer852423d ago

@ultranova.

Neither the low visuals or tracking bother me as much as setting it up.

Obviously they should be better for 2.0.

But reduction of wires or wireless would help more imo.

I have 1 friend that owns one, and he wishes that he never got one. He just keeps it around to keep his wife happy because she bought it for him lol

UltraNova2423d ago

Why what's his issues with it?

AshleeEmerson2423d ago

Why? It has great games, it's the next level of interactivity and it's a huge push for industry to go from Flat gaming to actually being in the game. I have a friend named Aladdin but I'm intrigued by the nature, of this waste of a wish.

Good list but Thrill of the Fight 2 and Racket Club should be in this. TOFT 2 is one hell of a work out and even found myself watching boxing instructional videos in order to improve. Racket Club does an amazing job adapting tennis, badminton and pickleball into something that feels realistic but fits in with smaller VR spaces.

Both of these are great games!

TOFT has already featured in 131XR's 'best' series: https://youtu.be/jExm8PbCVq...
