Personally, I definitely had a similar experience to this guy. I found Control disappointing.

RpgSama2432d ago

Even if you found Control disappointing, which is your own personal opinion and you have every right to feel that way, I think we would agree that a 4/10 it's deserved only for broken, very sub-par games in every way, from gameplay to graphics and structure

SegaGamer2432d ago

I completely disagree. A game can look really nice, have zero bugs and perfect controls, but if I don't like the gameplay, then I am rating it under 5. I'm not going to give an average or above average rating for a game I didn't enjoy playing.

1-2 is poor, 3-4 is below average, 5 is average, 6 is above average, 7-8 is good, 9-10 is excellent.

Obelisk922432d ago (Edited 2432d ago )

I agree with SegaGamer.

This rating scale where everything playable gets an 8 or higher has to be dumped.

Anyway I found Control to be a bit underwhelming except for the great graphics and fun gameplay ideas. Just a bit undercooked. A 7 for me.

Soybetaboy2432d ago

@segagamer

Same way I feel about 95 percent of switch exclusives, mechanically functional, graphically decent at best
But I rate them between 3 to 4 out of 10 bc they bore me to death.

Imortus_san2432d ago (Edited 2432d ago )

The game is broken on consoles, it runs between 12fps and 30fps, depending on the screen action.

0hMyGandhi2432d ago

@SegaGamer

That's why I used to love it when a magazine like GamePro would actually have a "fun factor" rating in their reviews. Graphics/Sound/Mechanics can be perfect, but if the game's sole tenant is a rock-solid Flappy Bird, scores should reflect that.

And to @RpgSama,
Games should not be given "bonus points" for not being broken. That is an expectation.

addictedtochaos2432d ago

Broken is 1/10 or even 2/10. 4/10 is below average.

Unspoken2432d ago

My only gripe is that it ended too soon. Remedy made such an interesting world and story and even though I have more quests to finish after the game, I really crave more story and lore. I'm now searching for all all the hidden areas in the game.

indysurfn2432d ago

How many hours was the main story?

RedDevils2432d ago

Same here, I couldn't get into the game. I'm just not enjoying it just bore me even before half way through the game.

NiteX2432d ago

You're not wrong, it is on the Epic store only. No idea how you could disagree with that fact....

abstractel2432d ago

Hah, I just finished it. I enjoyed it quite a bit but as much as they focused on the story it really wasn't that well written (IMO). I felt it was a bit innovative in some areas and some of the "bosses" felt fresh. There's a really cool sequence near the end.

I have to mention the raytracing. Digital Foundry did a good video on its use in Control. Lucky enough to own a 2080ti and I would often catch myself in the reflections of windows thinking it was an enemy. There are more gameplay elements to be explored that only raytraced reflections will give you. Just opens up options, doesn't mean it needs to be in every game.

Also, I feel this is a perfect example of what you can do with a smaller team if you design the game being aware of your resources.

Spurg2432d ago

The narrative was severely lacking. Not on part with previous remedy games.

Ricegum2432d ago

Must say I'm looking forward to getting to play an Alan Wake remaster on my PS4. I've heard good things about it.

Neonridr2432d ago

it's fantastic, I hope the rumours are true.

Gaming4Life19812432d ago

Alan wake is great and deserves a remaster.

RedDevils2432d ago

Could have gotten Alan wake on Epic store for free couple of weeks ago.

MasterCornholio2432d ago

Well it's better than Quantum Break at least. The TV stuff was horrible in my opinion.

Spurg2432d ago

No, it wasn't. Quantum break's story was well presented despite the TV show. Control used way too many notes scattered around to tell its story. there are 100 of notes you have to read to gain a comprehension as to what is going on within the world. Unfortunately, the story itself isn't interesting enough and the main character had one of the most deadpan performances in a AAA game for a while.

MasterCornholio2431d ago

I found the acting to be poor in the TV show segments plus it just seemed cheesy to me. That's why I doubt that Controls story is worse than that. But I've only watched a playthrough of Quantumbreak and not Control so I guess my opinion probably isn't very valid.

windblowsagain2432d ago

Playing atm, and tbh other then it's combat and physics, the game is not all that.

But I found RDR 2 boring as well. So slow and crap controls.

Not everything is a masterpiece.

Main thing you must get right is controls, story and pacing.

conanlifts2432d ago

Not played control yet, but I agree regarding RDR 2. Persisted for 3 acts and had to give up.

windblowsagain2432d ago

That's how I found it, really tried.

Enjoyed the original game much more.

I know some people call it weighty etc. But just felt odd and not smooth. Had the controls been better I probably would have enjoyed it much more.

Graphics were excellent though on RDR2.

Elda2432d ago

Agreed. By time I ended chapter 2 on RDR2 I gave it up because it was so boring,I traded it in for another game.

NiteX2432d ago

Control has great.... controls though.

DarXyde2432d ago

"Playing atm, and tbh other then it's combat and physics, the game is not all that."

So... in other words, it plays well like a good game should?

Video game scores, in my opinion, should never be negatively impacted by story. It can enhance the score because it makes a game more enjoyable, but those demanding a great story are really looking for an interactive movie. Naughty Dog titles are fun with great narrative. Zelda or Mario have pretty simple stories but are great games... but a game with a good story and terrible gameplay are bad games, period.

Story as a deciding factor in review score just seems like utter nonsense.

monkey6022432d ago

And yet Telltale games were well regarded. They had fantastic stories and quite bad gameplay.

No I think a bad narrative should certainly effect a games review if that's one of the criteria the game has.
There's some very poor games that have decent gameplay but there's just no drive behind the purpose

Cobra9512432d ago

I agree. Games need to be games first. Story is secondary, though a good one certainly enhances the experience.

monkey602, Telltale games *are* interactive movies. "Gameplay" doesn't rise above something that can be made using old Flash.

DarXyde2432d ago

Monkey602,

You're distorting my words.

I said narrative should not HURT the score, but can enhance it. If a game is a solid 10/10 in gameplay with a bad story, it should still be reviewed as a 10/10.

Tt games' scores depend on narrative. If they're good, then it can bolster the score. But bad story should not hurt a game score.

Psychotica2432d ago (Edited 2432d ago )

The only thing I didn't care for in RDR2 was no fast travel back to camp which was a pain in the ass..

Count_Bakula2432d ago

Yeah eight years or so, no PC, no DLC, and has clunky controls and almost no upgrades to shooting and movement from previous GTAs? Pretty unacceptable in my opinion. People rate R* games 10s because they have great screenwriters I think. Hit us with great story, and people seem to ignore all else about a game besides visuals.

Unspoken2432d ago

If you claiming combat and physics are it's main piece you are missing 2/3rds of the game.

LoveSpuds2432d ago (Edited 2432d ago )

Seems like a harsh score to me personally, but I would agree that I don't find the game to be particularly compelling. My son just got the platinum, he absolutely loved it but I am finding that I am having to force myself to return to the game each day, I am around three quarters of the way through it now and honestly, I'll be glad when I complete it.

Report: New Trademark for "Control: Resonant" Unearthed, Ahead of TGA

New evidence suggests a Control reveal is imminent. A trademark discovery ahead of The Game Awards hints at big news for Remedy's franchise.

Storm23172d ago

Control was really good. There was a ton of backtracking and running through the building from one end to the other a ton of times, but otherwise I loved it. Can't wait to see the sequel.

medman171d ago

Yeah it was awesome....looking forward to this reveal

REDGUM171d ago

I really enjoyed Control though without the mini map i found myself lost and or unsure of what to do too often and gave in on the game about 30% in.
Ive just re-downloaded it with the latest update with the enhanced graphics but unaure I'll dig back into it agaith with my current backlog.
Looking forward to seeing whats next from Remedy though.

toxic-inferno171d ago

I know exactly what you mean. I've played the game through twice and have had the same issue both times.

What I found on my latest playthrough was that the best way to navigate is to use the physical signs in-game as well as the map.

How the Remedy Connected Universe does the multiverse right

ScribbleCat said: Media is certainly no stranger to connecting all their properties together. Comic books have been doing this for generations, and TV is also known for special crossover episodes, which confirm the notion that they take place in the same fictional world. Video games, which can be barely called a new medium at this point, also have some interesting overlaps with connecting different games. For example, Valve’s Portal and Half-Life show how subtle hints can give players more theories to chew on. Old classics like DOOM and Wolfenstein also share similarities. But my favorite connection between games is the Remedy Connected Universe. While only a connection between Alan Wake and Control have been confirmed, there is SO much more to explore with Remedy’s crazy take on this old formula. And, according to Sam Lake, this is only the beginning.

SimpleSlave331d ago

They really should release the full Quantum Break experience on the PS5. Sure, it's a middle-of-the-road third-person shooter and a perfect example of self-indulgence, but why not? It was fun in short burst and it completes the Remedy set until Max Payne 1+2 Remakes get released later on.

Do it, Microsawft. Don't be cowards.

eh?
They better not mess much with the Max Payne Remake(s)

Yui_Suzumiya545d ago

Yeah but this was announced before the Max Payne Remake after all

LucasRuinedChildhood545d ago (Edited 545d ago )

What does "unlocking some previously released content" actually mean though? I would imagine it should be "previously unreleased content". Bit odd.

DaReapa545d ago

Right. Especially since the Ultimate Edition supposedly contained everything.

raWfodog545d ago

I only played about an hour of Control when I added it to my library back when it was one of the PS+ ‘free’ games. I’ll start it over again after the early 2025 update is dropped. I keep hearing that it’s a good game.

jznrpg545d ago

You can make that statement for any game. It’s called gameplay loop. Not everyone is going to enjoy the same loops but all games are repetitive by nature

RedDevils545d ago

Agree it was very boring game. Could not get into it. Remember me the game I played on PS3 is still better than this.

Chocoburger545d ago

These days "RPG" translates to constantly grinding for experience points, wasting time upgrading gear, and repeatedly collecting resources off the ground.

Please don't be an Ubishit style filler game.

Yui_Suzumiya545d ago

Hopefully it'll be more like Mass Effect

Amplitude545d ago (Edited 545d ago )

Remedy doesn't really make mistakes. It'll be good, I'm sure.

Inverno545d ago

So in other words it's an action game needlessly fluffed out with RPG mechanics and a pointless leveling system. I really enjoy RPGs when they're actually RPGs but modern action games really tire me out when they shoehorn in mechanics they don't need. All this does is make a 20 hour game into a 40 hour game because missions become locked behind level requirements, and enemies become damage sponges. It's not fun, it's tedious.
