Control Review - IGN

Remedy’s latest adventure creates a captivating, oddball world that never loses the thread of its supernatural tale.

-Foxtrot2444d ago

It's doing really well, looks like Remedy is back after Quantum Break.

Thank God.

DarkOcelet2444d ago

Tbh, Quantum Break wasn't that bad, the story was really captivating and the gameplay segments were dope. I wish one day we get a sequel. Remove the live-action segments and replace with in-engine cutscenes, make your choices actually matter, give us more time powers, increase the playtime, tighten the gunplay a bit and you will have a masterpiece of a sequel. That cliffhanger, in the end just makes me hopeful that one day we will see a sequel.

Also, super happy that Control is getting good reviews and hopefully Remedy keeps making more new ips. Their story telling and world building are super detailed and complex which is something i appreciate and always leaves me wanting more.

-Foxtrot2444d ago

Compared to Max Payne and Alan Wake, Quantum Break was pretty lousy.

They added so much live action crap they forgot about the actual game, I'd rather them go back to Alan Wake after this, continue Control or create a new IP something similar to Max Payne, a spiritual successor.

Obelisk922444d ago

I liked Quantum Break, for me it was just a little on the short side.

I wouldn't complain about the game itself, but yeah, Alan Wake felt more inspired to me.

darthv722444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

QB is not lousy. It's actually quite good and you cant really compare it to Alan Wake since its a totally different kind of game. Remedy made QB the way they did because they wanted to. So if you got a problem with QB then you got a problem with Remedy.

Control could be considered a spiritual successor to QB because there are many similarities but also obvious differences.

IamTylerDurden12444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

The fiction in Control interests me far more than in Quantum Break. Exploring the Oldest House with a Metroidvania setup. A building that doesn't adhere to the laws of physics and is infinitely larger on the inside than out. Dimensional shifts and objects touched by off-world entities imbued with power. The "Hiss" controlling and mutating people into dangerous abominations. An interesting protagonist in search for her brother and capable of wielding unsightly abilities in a place of power. It's crazy and way out there, but it's also more creative than QB. The tired time travel/time manipulation trope in QB always looked cliche to me. It just wasn't original and Ashmore was a competent, yet boring protagonist imo. The live action segments and the time travel theme were both highly encouraged by Microsoft. Originally Remedy was producing the game as a potential Alan Wake sequel, but the theme was changed in order to accommodate a new IP as Microsoft wanted.

Imalwaysright2444d ago

IamTylerDurden1

Remedy knew from the get go that it wasn't producing an Alan Wake sequel. Remedy did pitch an Alan Wake sequel with the idea of having live action segments for it but since Alan Wake wasn't a commercial success, MS wasn't interested in publishing a sequel for it so they asked Remedy if they were open to create a new IP while keeping the concept of having live action segments wich Remedy agreed to do. Agreed to do because Remedy is an independent studio and could do whatever it wanted including refusing MS offer. As for the time/quantum physics theme it was a creative decision made by Remedy and Remedy alone.

Unspoken2444d ago

Lol they never left. Quantum Break was a good game and it looks like they built on their experience with Control.

Kornholic2443d ago

Quantum Break's gameplay was dull and often clunky.

They gave this game a way higher review score compared to Quantum Break. I actually fell to sleep playing QB especially the cutscenes.

IamTylerDurden12444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

It's an 86 on PC.

Quantum Break was a 66 on PC.

On PC Control is rated 20 points higher than Quantum Break according to Metacritic.

That is crazy, and all under a smaller publisher and lesser budget. The differential isn't as high on XB1 but Control is still rated higher. Currently An 83 on XB1. Congrats to Remedy, they took "Control" back and showed their talent.

Kribwalker2444d ago

It’s an 85 on open critic and quantum break was a 77 on open critic. I love how you go to the two extremes tyler to try to make it look better to you lol.

2444d ago
conanlifts2443d ago

Iamtylerdurden1

QB was broken on PC when it launched so scored accordingly. It was 77 on console. It was good but flawed.

chiefJohn1172443d ago

Ign gave Quantum break an 8/10 lol how is .8 way higher?

Neonridr2444d ago

glad to see them return to form. They are a really good studio and they have some really great ideas.

Neonridr2444d ago

@darthv72 - Alan Wake was my personal favorite game from their studio. I just felt that with QB they lost focus a little. I appreciate that they were trying new things, but I felt that the live action aspect of that game got in the way a little. I still respected them for what they did, but I am happy to see them just make a kick ass game again.

darthv722444d ago

In QB, the live action stuff wasnt a good idea, but the game overall is still good. And Max Payne, Alan Wake and QB are all something different with a few little details they carried from one to the other. That is just their style and Control continues that trend. Like i said, they never left form so it can't be a return. They still have their creative drive to make good games. This is no different... well there is no live action cut scenes. So that's good.

Neonridr2444d ago

@darthv72 - fair enough, as I said, I am a huge Remedy fan and could care less where their games were available to be played in the past. Glad to see that more people can enjoy their work though. Super excited to give this game a go.

Right? Especially considering how amazing that game was.

DEEHULK882444d ago

Most of you goofy trolls have never played QB and are only downing it because it was on Xbox. Buy Control and STFU. If Control was just on Xbox, you would be downing it as well. The only thing wrong with QB was the fact that iy wasn't marketed the way it should've been.

NarutoFox2444d ago

"If Control was just on Xbox, you would be downing it as well."

Not true because I always had good things to say about Alan Wake on my Reddit and Gamespot account. Alan Wake was fantastic to me.

DEEHULK882444d ago

NarutoFox- Obviously I'm not talking about you then, but there are people on here that have not played the game but are speaking on it. I played it the other day and found nothing wrong with it. I thought that it was typical Remedy but just not marketed as well as it should've been. I'm glad that they are on there own now the same way I'm glad Quantic Dreams are on their own now because it gives more people a chance to play their vision.

-Foxtrot2444d ago

I played it

Have the steelbook

Thought it was boring

IamTylerDurden12444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

Control looked good from the jump and it's receiving better reviews than QB. The subject matter appears more creative, the combat is supposedly more varied, and it is said to have more replayability. It appears to be a better game.

Also, QB turned some people off with the terrible live action and the arrogant comments by Aaron Greenberg bragging about how great the game was prior to release.

Control is an 85 Open Critic, Quantum Break is a 77. https://opencritic.com/game... I don't think people are saying Quantum Break is terrible, but rather Control appears to be better and appears to be a return to form by Remedy. I'm sure many people enjoyed Quantum Break, but it was a low performing release for Remedy both critically and commercially.

Flewid6382444d ago

I played in on Steam this year and thought it was a masterpiece.

Already purchased this because...well...Remedy.

GaboonViper2444d ago

What a sad Man child you are.

sushimama2443d ago

My friend has an Xbox One S, he played QB, he said it was absolutely terrible. He never finished it. So maybe it got better as the game went on, but somehow I doubt that.

Kribwalker2444d ago

you speak like Quantum Break was some sort of disaster of a game. It was a good single player game, that averaged a 77 on open critic (control is at a 85 on open critic, only 8 points higher) It wasn’t amazing, but it was a solid game.

I have no doubt control is better, as it seems almost like it’s a sequel to Quantum Break (IGn even said as much last year https://ca.ign.com/articles...
where they have refined what they were doing and made some necessary changes to the Quantum Break formula. It was a good game, not amazing, but definitely not this red headed step child you’re trying to make it out to be

IamTylerDurden12444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

The problem is, many people are crying about Remedy never losing form, but the truth is that Quantum Break was a low point. Max Payne was an 89, Max Payne 2 was an 86, Alan Wake was a slight dip but still an 83 while Quantum Break was a 77 and a 66 on PC. Control is an 85. Even though it goes well beyond numbers and reviews are not always entirely accurate, they still support the argument that Quantum Break was a low point. I don't think most people are saying Quantum Break was awful, it had many redeeming qualities and you could see the talent was there. Unfortunately they had a publisher that pushed them in the wrong direction and the game was a disappointment as far as the lineage of Remedy is concerned. Also, i acknowledge that critics are sometimes way off and Metacritic/Open Critic is not the only determination for whether or not a game is good or if people enjoyed it. However, despite a large marketing push and ringing endorsement from Microsoft, Quantum Break simply didn't sell. The game was a commercial flop. If people truly loved it despite the criticism it should've moved more units. Days Gone had very mixed reviews, but people generally loved it and the game sold damn near 4 million units in just several months on market.

I think people are also just happy to see Remedy doing their thing and having success. Quantum Break had a much larger budget and higher expectations, yet Control seems to be significantly better, in part because Remedy was probably afforded more creative freedom and i think that's refreshing to people.

Shane Kim2444d ago

Haven't played it but everything higher than 7 is generally a good game for most people.

darthv722444d ago

Have you played QB Tyler...? You focus so much on these 'numbers' but have you really sat down and played it to see if it fits those numbers?

I have and personally the game is a very solid 8 but my number doesnt count in the grand scheme of things for MC and OC (that you like to tout so much). The only score that matters is my own. I've never let a score sway my decision to play a game, and I'm not about to start anytime soon.

Unspoken2444d ago

Truth is people hated it simply because it was on Xbox and the new engine didn't allow it to run at 60 fps on everyone's family PC or console. The "numbers" obscure the reality of QBs release and dismissing it as a quality game is a disservice to Remedy.

Days Gone had a larger install base to sell to...these facts of yours are very arbitrary.

sushimama2443d ago

QB is widely regarded as garbage.

Sophisticated_Chap2444d ago

The only reason Quantum Break didn't get rave reviews, was based on the fact it was an Xbox One exclusive. Had it been multiplatorm, the twitter mob would have said 'Remedy is back!'.

-Foxtrot2444d ago

But Alan Wake did fine so...

DEEHULK882444d ago

Foxtrot- Alan Wake was on 360, which was lived a helluva lot more than Xbox one, so that is a bad comparison.

darthv722444d ago

People shunned the platform so the games suffered as a result.

I didnt shun it and I think QB is a really good game. I wished more people could learn to separate the platform from the platform holder (parent from product) because the xbo is a good system and the games are fun. But there is to much "guilty by association" thinking (especially on this site).

RangerWalk2672444d ago

I enjoyed Quantum Break. To each their own I guess.

gamer78042444d ago

glad its doing well, I really like remedy's Alan wake, max Payne and quantum break, but an office building setting doesn't really interest me much, I'll probably buy it but wait til its about 20$

conanlifts2443d ago (Edited 2443d ago )

Did you ever play QB? Personally I liked it, but found it to be flawed. Overall it was a good game, yet is treated as a failure by many. The live action segments were unneeded though and detracted from the game.

DarXyde2443d ago

I thought Quantum Break looked great and was one reason I bought an Xbox One, but I really couldn't get into it.

Nor a bad game by any stretch, but Alan Wake was a much better Remedy game in my opinion.

Nice! This game has me really intrigued, can't wait to dive into it.

solideagle2444d ago

This game got 4/10 from one reviewer wow...stupidity of some of the reviewer baffles me. 4/10 means a broken mess.

JEECE2444d ago

Inevitably there's a game that was actually a broken mess that the same reviewer gave a 7.

ginsunuva2443d ago

4/10 can mean slightly below average depending on whether they use the standard 10-point scale or the high-school grading scale.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro2443d ago

4/10 isn't a broken mess, it's below average.

Report: New Trademark for "Control: Resonant" Unearthed, Ahead of TGA

New evidence suggests a Control reveal is imminent. A trademark discovery ahead of The Game Awards hints at big news for Remedy's franchise.

Storm23158d ago

Control was really good. There was a ton of backtracking and running through the building from one end to the other a ton of times, but otherwise I loved it. Can't wait to see the sequel.

medman157d ago

Yeah it was awesome....looking forward to this reveal

REDGUM158d ago

I really enjoyed Control though without the mini map i found myself lost and or unsure of what to do too often and gave in on the game about 30% in.
Ive just re-downloaded it with the latest update with the enhanced graphics but unaure I'll dig back into it agaith with my current backlog.
Looking forward to seeing whats next from Remedy though.

toxic-inferno157d ago

I know exactly what you mean. I've played the game through twice and have had the same issue both times.

What I found on my latest playthrough was that the best way to navigate is to use the physical signs in-game as well as the map.

How the Remedy Connected Universe does the multiverse right

ScribbleCat said: Media is certainly no stranger to connecting all their properties together. Comic books have been doing this for generations, and TV is also known for special crossover episodes, which confirm the notion that they take place in the same fictional world. Video games, which can be barely called a new medium at this point, also have some interesting overlaps with connecting different games. For example, Valve’s Portal and Half-Life show how subtle hints can give players more theories to chew on. Old classics like DOOM and Wolfenstein also share similarities. But my favorite connection between games is the Remedy Connected Universe. While only a connection between Alan Wake and Control have been confirmed, there is SO much more to explore with Remedy’s crazy take on this old formula. And, according to Sam Lake, this is only the beginning.

SimpleSlave317d ago

They really should release the full Quantum Break experience on the PS5. Sure, it's a middle-of-the-road third-person shooter and a perfect example of self-indulgence, but why not? It was fun in short burst and it completes the Remedy set until Max Payne 1+2 Remakes get released later on.

Do it, Microsawft. Don't be cowards.

Yui_Suzumiya531d ago

Yeah but this was announced before the Max Payne Remake after all

LucasRuinedChildhood531d ago (Edited 531d ago )

What does "unlocking some previously released content" actually mean though? I would imagine it should be "previously unreleased content". Bit odd.

DaReapa531d ago

Right. Especially since the Ultimate Edition supposedly contained everything.

raWfodog531d ago

I only played about an hour of Control when I added it to my library back when it was one of the PS+ ‘free’ games. I’ll start it over again after the early 2025 update is dropped. I keep hearing that it’s a good game.

jznrpg531d ago

You can make that statement for any game. It’s called gameplay loop. Not everyone is going to enjoy the same loops but all games are repetitive by nature

RedDevils531d ago

Agree it was very boring game. Could not get into it. Remember me the game I played on PS3 is still better than this.

Chocoburger531d ago

These days "RPG" translates to constantly grinding for experience points, wasting time upgrading gear, and repeatedly collecting resources off the ground.

Please don't be an Ubishit style filler game.

Yui_Suzumiya531d ago

Hopefully it'll be more like Mass Effect

Amplitude531d ago (Edited 531d ago )

Remedy doesn't really make mistakes. It'll be good, I'm sure.

Inverno531d ago

So in other words it's an action game needlessly fluffed out with RPG mechanics and a pointless leveling system. I really enjoy RPGs when they're actually RPGs but modern action games really tire me out when they shoehorn in mechanics they don't need. All this does is make a 20 hour game into a 40 hour game because missions become locked behind level requirements, and enemies become damage sponges. It's not fun, it's tedious.
