The amount of hatred towards Kojima is hilarious at best. It’s not that hard to figure out that Death Stranding has a sci-fi feel to it.

Honestly though, some creative people do need direction to get the best out of them and their projects. I guess we'll find out if that applies to Kojima but I'll keep on believing in him until proven otherwise. Regardless, Konami weren't right, essentially chaining him up was not the solution regardless of what they thought.

Kojima is undoubtedly an "auteur", and people who have wild imaginations like him need some form of limitations, they need restraint. If they don't get it, it can often lead to disaster (we see it happen all the time with movies, for example).

There would just have to be people trying to side with Konami eventually, but no. Konami wasn't right about anything here. Whatever happens now with Kojima is completely on him and I'm sure he's just fine with that. Weird isn't a bad thing. Creativity isn't a bad thing.

No one is saying that creativity is a "bad thing". Weird isn't also considered "bad" (it *can* limit the reach of your audience, however) but I suppose that in an industry that has entire studios fold after one "bad" game, it can certainly be seen as "risky" to make a niche game.

I am a huge Kojima fan, but I am not going to lie and say that I'm not concerned, it's because Kojima built this studio from the ground up, and most of the people on his team are not exactly going to tell him that "no".

We will see.

Of course ppl want new but just making weird shit for sake of being different, with no real continuity of themes or mood isn’t necessarily good. The innovation part comes from making something new and great that has broad appeal... hence the term “game changer”. DS is not a game changer and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was met with mixed reviews.

Not every ps4 exclusive is going to be a masterpiece and honestly the author of the article makes some pretty valid points.

Mood is a melancholy acceptance of an apocalypse, theme is basicaly time/life & death, and yes there is continuity. A seperate reality is seeping into our own, and is drawn to people and does something to them that is apparently worse than death, so now the only people left are ones smart/resourceful enough to survive and do something about it (some study, some fight, others police) and you are the courier that transports things between them.

Yeah theres still a lot of vague mysteries leaving everything very obscured but that's what Kojima wants you to figure out when you play the game. A mysterious world is no fun if everything is explained to you.

It's just going to be up to what it is when it comes out. Everything else is speculation based on the dribble of the content we've seen up to now.

From what I've seen, it looks like a faux surrealist fever dream. Doesn't mean a damn up until the thing comes out in its entirety.

So what do you suggest? That developers stop trying new ideas and keep making Call of Duty and Assassins Creed clones? Im guessing you are an Xbox guy. Are you happy with the same 3-pillar release loop of Halo, Gears, and Forza over and over and over?

I'm not saying Death Stranding is going to be a masterpiece or anything. It COULD be poorly reviewed. However for anyone right now to make a judgement on the game before ever playing it is silly.

I'm not saying they shouldn't try new concepts lol. All I'm saying is that it's not automatically good BECAUSE it's a new concept.

I never said that risks don't come with rewards at all, some of the best devs take the idea and spin on its head eg Mario 64 and Sly 2, where Sly2 created its own individuality but still uses the idea of Mari0 64.

The trailers of death stranding has me super excited but not gonna lie, I've never clicked with his games mgs etc.
I appreciate his work but it's just never worked for me so I'm going into death stranding with excitement but dread at the same time if it doesn't click with the me.

Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat. I respect the hell out of him for sticking HARD to his guns and only ever making what he wants to make and I hope he keeps doing that forever, because it sets a very good example for the rest of the industry.

After the first Metal Gear Solid, though, his games just have not been for me...but I suppose that's kind of the point. TONS of people love his games, so why is it that he can't make them? Why should ANY developers be obligated to filter their vision through a bunch of focus-group BS when people like Kojima can make some of the most idiosyncratic games out there, and people obviously love it to death? Let creators be creative, dammit.

Kohima’s games have definitely gotten a little weird as he has gotten older. With the MGS5 games, some of the themes and scenarios were truly bizarre...while I didn’t like the last two games as much as the earlier ones, I can respect that he doesn’t compromise his vision.

I disagree. Do you really think it's because of this article that we get those games? We get those games because people buy them. Alot of people. We've gotten microtransactions because Bethesda sold horse armor and people bought it. Publishers are greedy and cater to the largest market possible.

We don't get games like Death Stranding because people don't actually support them, by, you know, actually buying the game. I'd like to see more developers take more risks, but the truth of the matter is that making games takes alot of time, and is insanely expensive. Going off the beaten path, for even a fraction of a second, could lead to a loss of millions of dollars.

Ironically, it's often because big franchises introduce "new" mechanics that people often complain that it's "not battlefield" or it's "not call of duty enough" and absolutely shred it to pieces online.

Articles like this just reinforce a very obvious point: the "weirder" your game appears, without a particular selling point that is seen as "relatable" to others like it, with a story that is immediately known or understood, has the potential to limit your reach to basically your "core" fan base.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see games like this succeed. But this article and the underlying implications that it happily states as "points of contention/concern" is just an honest way of seeing the potential market for this game, and what happens when a very talented game designer has almost zero creative limitations or constraints to make the game that he wants..

My crystal ball foresees mixed reviews for sure.
Love it or hate it kinda game.
My guess is anyone who hasn't liked his previous work will probably not like it, mgs die hards will love it, gamers who maybe didn't like games like heavy rain, beyond 2 souls, detroit will probably not like it, younger apex, fortnite crowd will never play it, complaints in reviews about cuts scenes being too long, reviews about its not a game BS.
Tbh I hope I like it but I sit on the not a big fan of kojima side (appreciate his work of course)
I just hope it reviews correctly and the kojima die hard articles are honest and not just it's amazing for the sake of it being kojima.
If it's weird , fun, great gameplay mechanics, great weapon wheel, great story etc with what seems to be a new type of game which hopefully feels fresh, new etc then I'm all in but if this new type of game just isn't fun then it just didn't work.

I kind of agree with you but I don’t think all the MGS fans will necessarily be blindly into it. I’ve played all the metal gear games since the first one on ps1 and thoroughly enjoyed them, but I’m still not sold on this. It’s pretty, but I’m not sure the gameplay actually looks fun to play. Walking around delivering packages, peeing and soothing a baby aren’t really things I want to do a lot of. If there is more combat maybe, but it’s not indicating there is much so far.

I'm not entirely sure how to read this, as it doesn't seem exactly like an exact parallel to Bethesda's paid mods shenanigans.

Rather than single player stuff, this appears to be aimed solely on Cfx Servers. From what I've gleaned, apparently Rockstar bought the Cfx mod team several years ago, coming a few years after weird contentions led them to ban a few of their members. Ultimately, the question is if they plan to keep this contained to only online/servers.

I have to guess to a degree yes. It'd be pretty hard to "force" paid mods for single player when modding files locally on your own machine, but much easier for servers they'll control. So perhaps this is their soft launch ahead of GTA6 online and they'll clamp down more tightly on non-official servers going forward? Ever since they've become a 1 or 2 property studio, I haven't really cared much for Rockstar stuff, so I'm not entirely up on everything surrounding this. Sounds like it has the potential to be problematic further down the line, but right now fairly easy to ignore...I think lol.
