The Witcher 3 on Switch is Technical Sorcery – GameSpew

Alan Wen for GameSpew: "When The Witcher 3 was announced for Switch, I couldn't believe it. And yet here I was, a Switch in my hands playing it. And what a sight to behold it is"

Is technical sorcery anything like pelvic sorcery?!

KeenBean3452470d ago

A game of this calibur and size handheld is nothing short of crazy, hope it runs as good as people are saying

Hungryalpaca2470d ago

No shit. It’s basically running on a portable last gen system....

Literal_Cringe2470d ago

Newer footage looks better though, pretty impressive for a device that runs on around 10 watts

Livingthedream2470d ago

It's on the switch what do you expect. IMO it's not impressive, it looks like you would expect on the switch. Impressive would be if it looked like the PS4 or even Xbox one version.

EddieNX 2470d ago

Anyone with half a brain knows that the Switch is an impressive and interesting device for the price. It's funny how some people still call it weak and compare it to bigger , more powerful home consoles.

Nemop2470d ago

It's incredibly powerful for a handheld, but incredibly weak for a home console. Kinda just how it has to be for this type of system.

harmny2470d ago

Why is it funny. It is weak. But Nintendo doesn't want it to be powerful

luckytrouble2470d ago (Edited 2470d ago )

I mean, is it really that impressive? Let's ignore the fact that the game came out in May 2015, early enough in this gen that we weren't really seeing anything that pushed the capability of the generation yet. Also consider that PC hardware was substantially weaker than it is now, meaning the game was likely developed with 700 series Nvidia GeForce cards in mind for higher end gaming since the 970 and 980 cards only launched about six months before the game launched. Keeping the power of the Tegra X1 chipset in mind, what's in the Switch, it is ultimately a little over a third as powerful as a 750 Ti.

With all of this considered, if you basically turn the game down to low and remove a good portion of effects like increased foliage and more complex shadows, there's no reason you couldn't get a stable 30 FPS on the Switch with some optimization. Based on the footage available, that's precisely what they did, so I'm not even remotely surprised.

I figured it would be a fairly basic but functional version of the Witcher 3, and that's precisely what it's turning out to be.

Outlawzz2470d ago

After reading your rant, I still must say yes it is pretty impressive.

luckytrouble2470d ago

Rant? I just explained why this isn't impressive. I mean, the Switch isn't powerful, sure, but half the time it seems people want to raise it up on a pedestal as a little powerhouse, while when it serves, they downplay the power of the Switch because that serves to raise it up in a different way.

I mean, just check out this build guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/wi...

That guide allows for pretty stellar settings at 1080p 60+ FPS on a processor that was already over four years old when the game came out, and a 700 series GPU as I stated as reference. I'm simply putting into perspective why pulling off the Witcher 3 on Switch isn't really amazing. With what I've seen, it's par for the course once you consider what you could manage if you turned the game down to 720p and cranked down a lot of the more optional graphics settings.

luckytrouble2470d ago

Oh disagrees, please explain. Does the truth irk you or something? I don't insult the Switch. I lay out hardware expectations logically. So you downvote because it makes sense. I implore that someone prove this community isn't simply filled with rabid Nintendo fans who seem to think anything that isn't straight up praise is instead an insult.

King_Noctis2470d ago (Edited 2470d ago )

It is impressive because basically this is The Witcher 3 running on a tablet sized console. Yes, the game came out in 2015, but you forget to realize that the PS4 and X1 struggled to run the game at 30FPS. If the game didn’t pushed those console to the limit, then why did this happen? Alot of mid-range PC had the same problem as well.

Unless there is a console (or a laptop for that matter) the size and the price of the Switch available on the market that can run this game as well as the Switch, I will still call this game impressive on the Switch.

Oh and FYI, the GTX 780 alone cost nearly $300 on Amazon, near the price of the Switch itself.

https://www.amazon.com/EVGA...

luckytrouble2470d ago

That's because the GTX 780 is legacy hardware. It has a more collector based price now. Ain't no one still using a 780 unless they absolutely have to. Also, don't forget that no one was specially optizimizing the game on the PS4 and Xbox One. It was developed on one, ported to the other, neither of them with a crap ton of time put into making sure they ran their best on both consoles.

It would be cool if people remember that when a developer's sole job is porting a game to a single console, they'll be able to optimize for the specific far, far better than a third party simply trying to make a game that will run on both Xbox One and PS4 without too much extra effort.

Tapani2470d ago

Switch uses 12 watts. That's in total for CPU and GPU, and on battery. And it's running one of the most demanding titles of this gen. There's really nothing like it on the market.

luckytrouble2470d ago

"One of the most demanding titles of this gen"

Yes, but actually no. Not fully optimized =/= demanding. Sweet christ, it's like you're all trying to be Nintendo PR people. "Here is where the Switch falls short, thus, this is amazing." I mean, I swear, if one of you shills actually bothered to admit anything resembling the truth, it'd probably end up being a sign of the oncoming apocalypse.

TheHateTheyGive2470d ago

They could get this to run on ps3 360.

King_Noctis2470d ago

With even more downgrades, as those consoles are weaker than the Switch.

Segata2470d ago

The switch is quite a bit more powerful than those and has 8x the amount of ram. So no. Witcher 2 was a miracle on 360.

The actor who portrayed Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher series of games has died

Alexander Morton, the Scottish actor probably best known for starring in British comedy drama Monarch of the Glen - but known to me for being the hilariously foul-mouthed dwarf Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 - has died aged 81.

3x less sales than Playstation.
3x less consoles sold than Playstation.

Per captita, it averages out that the same number of users are buying CDP games regardless of platform, no?

Bathyj65d ago

The exact same or possibly more because a series S, initial investment and effort to Port to Xbox consoles for a third of the return.

Simply not worth it

LMGk65d ago

“ Simply not worth it”

And yet, basically every game comes to Xbox.

NotoriousWhiz65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

A third is a pretty big number to be honest. Like would you rather make 15 million or 20 million? That's the difference that a third makes.

GamingSinceForever66d ago

Hey it’s ok. They are really impressed with XBOx’s new CEO so exclusivity is on the way. 😂

Loktai66d ago

Ok but I mean be logical ... modern PC, Switch, PS4 PS5 then you have XBOX, of all of those XBOX is probably only 10 percent... I mean, what do you expect? 10 percent increase in sales is still nothing to sneeze at, remember - this is CD projekt red and they sell a lot of software. 10 percent of their sales is probably what most studios DREAM of selling .... just playing devils advocate..... its easy to say LOL haha XBOX.... but.. I mean we know what it is at this point. I havent bought on since my xbox one X and before that I only used other peoples xboxes since the OG XBOX and stick with PC and Playstation and switch OLED, but .. I mean.... theres nothing WRONG with an xbox considering its just not the best - but they work fine. make no mistake.
