Epic opens new Cologne studio lead by the Rogue Squadron devs

From GameWatcher: "Epic Games is gearing up to create something new, it seems, as the company is opening a brand-new game development studio in Cologne, Germany headed by none other than Factor 5 - makers of classics like Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Turrican.

In practice, this obviously means that we'll be seeing more original games from Epic, but it also means that the new Cologne team is looking for nearly 200 new employees, which is great news for talent both local and foreign."

"...As part of the company's expanding focus on emerging forms of interactive media and streaming technologies."

I liked Factor 5. Obviously they wont be working on any Star Wars stuff (not without Disney request) so I hope their new projects have the same charm and quality they strive for.

NiteX2468d ago

I remember Factor 5 games being so awesome for GC. And then they went and made Lair for PS3. I wonder what happened?

darthv722468d ago

Lair, without the motion controls, is pretty good. Their hand was forced into adding them when they said it would not work like Sony wanted. you should check this out to know more... https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Or, the design of the game was just weak with poor gameplay. Nice looking dragons though.

They should have asked to remake Colony Wars instead from Psygnosis.

That would have went over better overall. Just like Warhawk did.

ZeekQuattro2468d ago

Who knows? All I know is because of that poorly received game the remastered Rogue Squadron trilogy was cancelled and Factor 5 was pretty much done after that.

darthv722468d ago

Yes, that was a sad situation. The trilogy looked like it was a labor of love for them.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing18d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit18d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing18d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
