Minecraft Super Duper Graphics Pack Ceasing Development

"Some of you might remember us announcing the Super Duper Graphics Pack during E3 2017. Super Duper was an ambitious initiative that brought a new look to Minecraft but, unfortunately, the pack proved too technically demanding to implement as planned.

We realise this is disappointing to some of you – there was a lot of enthusiasm for Super Duper from inside and outside the studio – but unfortunately, we aren’t happy with how the pack performed across devices. For this reason, we're stopping development on the pack, and looking into other ways for you to experience Minecraft with a new look."

Funny how fans can make packs like this yet Microsoft/Mojang themselves can't.

Let this also be a lesson for other developers. Don't announce projects so far in advance when you're not even sure if/when it'll release properly (or at all, in this case).

anonymousfan2399d ago

If I remember well the hype around this came around the same time as they announced the Xbox One X. Another cancelled Microsoft project I guess. Loved my Xbox 360 last gen yet I am so happy I went PS4 this gen.

Mr Pumblechook2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

I'm sad to hear this as the game looked great in the Super Duper Graphics Pack trailer (which Microsoft has now been taken down from YouTube.) It seems the extra lighting effects and textures were more demanding, on the product page it says "The pack will be released on Xbox One and Windows 10, performing best on high-end PCs and Project Scorpio." https://www.minecraft.net/e... Hopefully Xbox Scarlett will be powerful enough to run a newer version.

What's disappointing is that it was never scheduled to appear on other platforms like PS4 which perhaps suggest that in the future Microsoft will reserve the best Minecraft features for their own brand console.

omegaheat2398d ago

Please spare us with your attempts to convince us that you used to be an Xbox fan, but now somehow a Playstation fan . You don't have to claim your expired Xbox fandom in order to justify your dislike for the product.

This is the result of "No gamer left behind"

Literal_Cringe2399d ago

I was actually looking forward to it and wondering why the pack wasn't mentioned last year or this year, I am very disappointed.

Applejack2399d ago

This is absolutely ridiculous. I’ve been patiently waiting for this to come out so I can jump back into Minecraft then this news happens..

Xaevi2399d ago

I don't care either way, but I just hafto ask. You only work on Minecraft, or Minecraft related projects, you have nothing else to worry and yet you can't release a texture pack? You have a fanbase that has added Ray-tracing and realistic textures that make Minecraft look like an U4 engine tech demo in less time and for free. Yet you can't do this why?

gamer78042399d ago

It's because of tablets and phones.... once again ruining things for the rest of us.

Ausbo2399d ago

Remember they are also working on two other Minecraft games. They must’ve decided to use those people working on this for other things

rainslacker2399d ago

Because the minecraft devs make things that are supposed to work between platforms. Modders make things to work for people who have the proper hardware to run it.

It's the principal of lowest common denominator.

yoshatabi2398d ago

Then just make this pack for the proper hardware. Problem solved

rob-GP2398d ago

Those modders had modded the actual PC version though - this was for the UWP 'better together' version which was simply a mobile port of the game. The Java version which all the PC Minecraft players use is very different to this version as this one was gimped for mobile use.

Z5012398d ago

They have to develop for the lowest common denominator.

MS is the MAGA of gaming, a total f"*:!?g joke.

darthv72128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

Ironic, considering how liberal MS in general is....

crazyCoconuts127d ago

One difference... The majority didn't vote for Microsoft

Gamersunite880127d ago

Neither did the majority vote for Trump.

Reiunit1127d ago

They didn’t for Trump as well

MS is literally like the democrats and republicans!

They are just moving the goalposts until xbox is vaporware smh

Redgrave128d ago

Don't worry, consoles will be deemed "antiquated" when that happens

S2Killinit127d ago

MS would like everyone to believe.

HyperMoused128d ago

They did nothing but buy successful studios...

Exthun127d ago

And passed the costs to the gamers with everything.

FinalFantasyFanatic127d ago

And some of those studios barely did anything.

thesoftware730127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

So if they do bad, they suck!
And if the do good, they suck!...ok got it lol.

I think I'll post my comment from the other thread here soon, maybe, just maybe, some people might read it and realize that all these companies do very similar things....ha!! Who am I kidding...carry on good people.

Yang_kai127d ago

The last thing Microsoft needs is to enrage the PlayStation community and have them boycott Microsoft games releases on PlayStation

thesoftware730127d ago

See, this is part of what I think is a problem in gaming with "Hardcore" fans.... because of what MS may say that "Sony" gamers might not like, they would deny themselves a game that they wanna play?

That may be the problem, we put BS, made up slights, before being actually gamers.

Reaper22_127d ago

Don't worry, those gamers will be antiquated soon enough.

Jingsing127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

I mean, I haven't bought any Microsoft game on PlayStation since they started porting their games over. Most of that comes from a major lack of trust in them as a company. Microsoft only ever does moves to hurt the competition so they can ultimately dominate. They are certainly not hurting for cash. Their end goal is to move the goal posts so that everyone is using their cloud servers but that isn't enough for Microsoft, they want to have the cloud servers and be the entertainment company on top of that.

This is a great reminder of how game sales have become more concentrated in a smaller number of games/series over time. In the PS1/PS2 era a game was a success if it sold a million or a few million copies. The GTA games (3/Vice City/San Andreas) were pretty big outliers in selling as much as they did during the PS2 era. So in the minds of a lot of gamers something like FF VII feels like it was as big of a PS1 game as God of War 2018 was for PS4, but in reality far fewer people bought it (though it has obviously reached additional people through remasters, etc.).

StoneTitan176d ago

this was alwalys the case and will always be the case. with everything

177d ago
Zerobalance176d ago (Edited 176d ago )

What this says to me is, not many people are buying a PS to play PS exclusives. Like so many false narratives, like Xbox gamers don't buy games! It seems Playstation as a default system is a vanilla system to play call of duty, Minecraft, GTA games and a sports games.

badz149176d ago (Edited 176d ago )

if you look back into the PS history, it has always been the 3rd parties who sells the most games. it was just that the PS1 and PS2 were so dominant that many of those 3rd party games were exclusives. so, back during the PS1 and PS2 days, the strategy was "to sell as many consoles as possible in order to sell more 1st party exclusives" to ride on that wave. The strategy to push many 1st party exclusives to sell consoles only started with the PS3 when many of those prior 3rd party exclusives went multiplat but more accurately, it started with the PSP.

Sony saw with the PSP, which was being trounced in sales by the DS, that 3rd party exclusives are hard to come by if you're not dominating the market. So they started building more 1st party games and when the PS3 were facing difficulties in sales, they knew they had to rely on their own to differentiate the PS3 from the 360. So the strategy back then changed to "release more 1st party exclusives in order to sell more consoles".

the only manufacturer that is still consistently selling their hardware to play 1st party exclusives, is Nintendo, and that was because they gave up the armrace for power thus they can't rely on 3rd parties anymore as all multiplats play better on competing consoles. AND that's also why they are the most ominous in going after emulators and also patent trolling!

so, you're not wrong there, but not an "aha!" moment or anything. it has been this way since the last, at least, 15 years for Playstation.

176d ago
Deathdeliverer176d ago

@zerobalance

So... what this tells you is that Call of duty, being the absolute check writer that it is, has been outsold by Last of us, God of war, 2 Spider man games..... Saying Playstation exclusives doesn't sell is like saying call of duty doesn't sell because they have outsold some of iterations. Does that make sense to you?
