Going to be an interesting next gen with both consoles using SSD in their hardware. We're crossing into territory where load times will be a thing of the past.

The future is here!

Brave_Losers_Unite2482d ago

The future was here on PC years ago

gangsta_red2482d ago

We only need to look at the past to see the future.

343_Guilty_Spark2482d ago

Well it's just coming to consoles so he's technically not wrong

XxINFERNUSxX2482d ago

Exactly, we have nvme pcie 4.0 ssds now. SSDs should have been in consoles a few years ago, PC paves the way and at the forefront as always.

sprinterboy2482d ago

Good luck playing all the AAA ps exclusives on your pc.

nucky642482d ago

if the future was here years ago on PC - why am i still waiting to play RDR1 on that platform?

nowitzki20042482d ago (Edited 2482d ago )

I dont know how you guys are going without SSD in 2019!!!

I have had SSD for about 7 years now lol.

Sophisticated_Chap2482d ago

Indeed, 10+ year old consumer technology.

mogwaii2482d ago

Please, consoles predict the future while PC waits in the loading dock.

nowitzki20042482d ago

@mogwaii Please explain what you are trying to say. I am having trouble understanding.

Pickledpepper2482d ago

But this article is not about pc.
How many times and how much money have you spent keeping your oh so powerful pc up to date?

nowitzki20042482d ago

@pickeledpepper Dude its not that bad lol. I literally only added 4gb of ram since I built my PC and that was like $35. Dont assume things.

TheSaint2481d ago

Does it trigger you that no one cares that your a PC elitist?

NarooN2481d ago

SSDs have been available on PC for a while but they certainly never eliminated load times. Depending on tbe game, the disparity could be anything between massive and minimal improvement. Even with NVMe drives and PCIe4, games can only push and move data as fast as the OS' file system and I/O capabilities will allow. As per Mark Cerny the PS5 will have a unique proprietary I/O solution in addition to the SSDs, something Windows won't be able to replicate.

It's gonna be interesting to see how multiplats are affected because of this. If a game is built around being able to traverse incredible distances very quickly, which relies on the ability tl stream and process geometry and assets extremely quickly (as we saw wjth the SpiderMan demo) how will the PC versions function. This might result in some games being retooled or nerfed altogether on Windows.

fiveby92481d ago

I don't think it is just that consoles are using SSDs this is considered ground breaking. People have been putting SSDs in their PS4 for years. It likely that the SSD is not using the SATA bus as the bandwidth is limited. I suspect it is either using PCIe bus and / or some additional cache mechanism to pre-fetch data. That said, PC use of drives such as M.2 PCIe SSD drives is somewhat common now.

2481d ago
garos822481d ago

that future sucks. still waiting to play on red dead redemption 2 in your timeline :P

rainslacker2481d ago

Not really. PC still uses high level OS operations to transfer data, which means games aren't designed around the ability to have near instantaneous access to data to move around quicker

The AC Odyssey load screens are some of the worst. So long and annoying.

scoot_n_loot2482d ago

I don't see SSD being affordable as external storage. Probably a small ssd used as a high speed cache.

NarooN2481d ago

SSD prices have came down drastically in the past couple years. They will be using an internal SSD with their own bespoke I/O implementation to facilitate the incredibly low load times and asset streaming. I don't know how they'll handle "regular" add-in drives however. Either they'll allow them for storage of media and games or sell their own proprietary drives for external use.

Here it comes!

8k
120fps
2tb SSD
And all for $400!!
I'm so happy

SugarSoSweet2482d ago

100% it's easily my most anticipated hardware upgrade along with the new CPU's (Zen 2)

Visceral892481d ago

I love how PC elitists act like everyone has had an SSD for 5 plus years, maybe very high end builds and capacity was lower. SSDs have only become mainstream the last 2 to 3 years.

LightofDarkness2481d ago

I've had an SSD since 2012. My build was around mid-high. By 2014, most gaming PCs were at least booting from SSDs.

2481d ago
nitus102481d ago

Load time will not be a thing of the past but they will be reduced dramatically (approx 3 to 6) compared to loading off a hard disk drive.

VTKC2481d ago

and with a hefty price tag! I am all for little to no loading but this SSD business wont do that price tag any good and I predict that earlier versions will have the SSD but later consoles will have it replaced with a traditional HDD due to "costs".

I bet propriety ssd technology is consoles will beat pc. A certain spec console can perform just as well as a much more expensive pc. And looking at the specs of next gen consoles tbh your going to have to have at least a 1080 or Radeon 7 to compete

2482d ago
Hungryalpaca2482d ago

They won’t beat PC. They never do. A top end PC will always be a stronger machine than a console.

Plus the 1080 will be nearly 5 years old by the time these consoles come out. Saying you’ll need top of the line from 5 years ago to compete doesn’t make it sound good.

I’m still getting a ps5 but we hear the same shit every time a new console nears release. SO STRONG. WILL CRUSH PC. Then it never does.

jukins2482d ago

Well the fact that you need to spend, at minimum, 2x the cost of a console to beat and in some cases match the performance of a console I'll call that a win for console.

Hungryalpaca2482d ago

It depends on the console. You can build the equivalent of the One X for around the same price.

They’re only astronomically more expensive if you buy off the shelf. Building is far cheaper.

Either way I’m stoked for the ps5. The PS4 came out severely underpowered.

Visceral892481d ago

@Hungryalpaca Sony has proven you don't need the highest specs to make visually stunning experiences. Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Uncharted 4.

DazaMc2481d ago

Not in the early 90s. The mega drive and snes kicked the PCs ass at 2d games. Even the N64 was miles better back in the day.

Sony is supposedly using proprietary tech that yheyve been working on for decades supposedly even faster than the pcie 4.0 spec that's gonna debut soon on PC final it hasnt already.

Hopefully the initial storage size is adequate. Doesnt seem like well be able to do an off the shelf upgrade unless expensive

harmny2482d ago

What are you smoking? Faster than pcie4 lol

jukins2482d ago

Lol u love when you know it alls actually prove your ignorance https://respawnfirst.com/ps...

Like it's impossible for anyone to have a custom pcie 4.0 interface that's faster than normal pcie 4.0. Not only that pcie 5.0 is already near. . . .

MarkyMark892481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

It will be PCIe 4.0 speeds, nothing faster, the overall experience will be faster due to it being a console and not a PC. But to think that Sony is going to step into a market (memory) without ever really being a big player and deliver something Intel, Samsung, WD, SG, have yet to. That's a reach and clearly, Cerny just playing with words for some good old good marketing. Most could give two shits about the hardware, and more about the results. Look what half the headlines to this interview read like over the web "PS5 loadtimes will be 10x faster then PS4" and majority won't even read the article. I will buy a PS5 and you will too on the assumption from your comments. But you don't need to blindly follow a company, its not a cult. Reminds me of fellow iPhone users, like they are brainwashed.

jukins2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

Markymark Sony has been involved in memory and harddrive for decades this isnt them just stepping in. It's not a play on Mark Cerny words.

Sony has always done r&d on memory harddrive hell anything hardware related. They have memory and hard drive patents even as far back as 20 years up until now.

I'm kinda baffled that you obviously think Sony is just a video game company and its impossible for them or anyone to have solutions better than what's on mass market. Just look back at how many times Sony has tried to have a proprietary storage solution out on the market.

Also all Samsung Intel wg etc have to make their equipment that has to compatible in an infinite amount of configurations. When you have one configuration its much easier to improve upon it

MarkyMark892480d ago (Edited 2480d ago )

Hmmm my memory seems a little blurry, but didn't we hear this around the same time the PS3 came out, that the cell processor was going to "revolutionize" the processor... Here we are a decade later and Sony's CPU is long and forgotten about, while greedy Intel still owns most of the market. Just because they have a patent and dabbled in something means nothing other than that. Lol like I said its a company, not a cult, but enjoy blindly following. I will enjoy the options and always weigh the pros and the cons and be sceptical of any claim of any platform or any device, gaming-related or not.

jukins2480d ago

Lmao you must be a Microsoft fanboy. . . No one said, especially not me, that the cell was gonna be revolutionary, why even bring that up? Intel? Who's talking about cpus? And honestly AMD is there taking marketshare away from Intel every day.

And again Sony hasnt just dabbled as I said theyve always tried to have a proprietary storage solution many many times let alone the decades of r&d how is that dabbling?

I'm still wondering how saying Sony has a proprietary solution that's supposedly faster than pcie 4.0 somehow means I'm blindly following a company. Please explain the only thing I can think of is your a Microsoft fanboy and this potentially positive Sony news has you triggered.

MarkyMark892480d ago (Edited 2480d ago )

But I am not a Sony fanboy, I own a Ps4 and PC, I also wish my PC was Linux based, but not all games support it, soo far from an MS fanboy.. You just wish I was an MS fanboy because it fits your script, you can't seem to understand anything else besides one side or the other. I don't blindly follow any statement by a company until it is proven, even outside of gaming. Yes AMD is taking market share from Intel, I have a Ryzen 7 2700x in my pc, a lot of my friends who upgraded recently from older Intel cpu's switched to the Ryzen platform. But Intel still owns the market, and the point I made before, just proves having a dicussion with you is pointless, its either one side or the other with you lol. Now on to the other point, it went entirely over your head, and I never said you said anything, I said the buzz around the internet and headlines read "revolutionary design" they envisioned it in every device in your household so they could all talk. From the Ps3 itself, to the TV to the dam toaster. But I guess you just like to dabble in news articles and actual knowledge about what you speak on, sounds familiar. Enjoy blindly following, btw why do you seem so mad?

Visceral892481d ago

Mark Cerny patented SSD technology and said the SSD that's in the PS5 will be faster than a M.2 NVMe Samsung 970 pro. PS5 will use its SSD in ways no PC games have. Lisa Su CEO of AMD said at Computex, Mark Cerny is looking at revolutionizing Consoles for the next ten years.

jukins2481d ago

I just dont get how these naysayers are disagreeing. . It's like it's impossible for anyone to come up with custom solution to make it more efficient.

rainslacker2481d ago

From what I can tell, people seem to assume that the I/O for how it works on PC is equivalent to how it works on consoles. Or they don't even know what I/O data is.

PC games simply aren't coded to take advantage of greater speeds. They can use them, and it can improve performance, but that's a lot different than devs using direct access to the drive commands and data transfer.

On PC, the OS adds a rather extensive bottleneck, but because not everyone is using ssd drives, it's not good for pc games to code their levels or general design to use anything other than resident memory.

I thought it was gonna eliminate loading screens ?

solideagle2482d ago

yes thats what previous article said, I am playing DMC 5 and it has so many loading screens. I wish they get rid of loading screens

nitus102481d ago

An SSD will reduce loading times by a factor of up to 6 but it won't completely eliminate loading. It also helps when the developer optimises any loading such that it is much more seamless.

2481d ago
Tross2481d ago

I like how they're trying to use semantics to cover up this fact. They clearly noticed that people were noticing the obvious that their headlines ended in "...says dev", so now they end them with "- ____ dev". Unfortunately for them, people are not stupid and we know these are still the same kind of articles.
