Microsoft Needs To Launch A Handheld Console

Nintendo Switch revitalized handheld console gaming, so could Microsoft do well with a handled device of its own?

Considering how scalable most of Microsoft currenty games are on the PC, they could very well run on a less powerful device aka a portable one. Plus there is also rumors that the Surface line might go for Qualcomm Arm based solutions going forward. If they used something based on the Adreno 530 they would have very competitive price all while being more or less on the same league as the Switch.

The biggest issue however is that Microsoft is also focusing on services. And a dedicated portable platform might not be what they envision for the future. As they could just keep going with their xCloud service that will work on a number of different devices.

I don't see microsoft making a handheld console I think xcloud is where they want to be. Out it on all devices and watch it grow.

Look at the mobile space office is the most used office product on a mobile device. They also offer onedrive, bing, 365 and other services on them.

The surface line is not really designed for home but business and this is where is is doing well and Microsoft know this.

But then again anything can happen and with Google stepping into the gaming world maybe Microsoft will change things to.

I also don't think they will, even if currently they are in the best position to make it work. They are focusing on services and the xCloud once released could overlap with a dedicated portable console.

Never. MS will continue to push xcloud and software/service. Hardware has never been their strong suit nor has taking risks. MS wants an all-digital, service based future heavy on MT's and MAU.

"Hardware has never been their strong suit..."

Xbox One X, seems like a strong console.

"...nor has taking risks"

Kinect, Xbox SADE, Xcloud, Game Pass. Looks like some risks.

"MS wants an all-digital, service based future heavy on MT's and MAU."

Naw, that would be Sony. They've already gotten a good head start with PSnow. Not to mention other services like PSVue. Plus Sony will be focusing more on MP next gen, sounds like a lot of MTs and DLC

MS was never popular in the mobile space. They never had a presence in the portable space. Their console space is doing ok, but not what I'd call overly popular. Their PC image is improving, but many gamers still remember the MS of before a few years ago.

I cant really see a portable from MS making any kind of impact. The whole point of xcloud is to move away from hardware, so why venture into the market? I doubt they could bring anything to it that isnt already there, or is fundamentally missing from that market

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
