20 Disastrous Xbox Decisions Microsoft Should Apologize For

Microsoft is one of those companies that people seem to both love to hate and hate to love. For every Halo, there's a disaster or two right behind it.

So many mistakes. When taking their time and putting in more effort would have gone a long way. Maybe the OG Xbox wouldn't have been the last and only Xbox I bought that's in my closet. But this one here:

*If people can just get a game on the PC they already have, why bother with an Xbox One?*

I'll add to it by saying, "being able to play anywhere on any device sounds great." But what about Xbox? What about Xbox? If you don't have to buy the box, what's the point in making it?

Some will say "it's only an option to have dedicated hardware with exclusives." "We shouldn't have walled gardens."

And that's the problem. You drank the Kool Aid.

DaDrunkenJester2515d ago

Believe it or not, there are a TON of gamers who either dont like PC gaming or dont have the funds to buy/build one that can 4k-ish game like a $500 xbox can do. For those that do have a capable PC, then it's great to have the extra option to play the Xbox games that you care for on that platform.

DaDrunkenJester2515d ago

@tekiz

That doesnt change the fact of the hardware and value. That only means people aren't interested in mid gen upgrades. The next Xbox and PS for around $500 will surely still outperform any PC setup you could buy and build yourself.

thethings.com? lol

Are these sent to you or do you actually go out and find them? Genuinely curious.

mijayire2515d ago (Edited 2515d ago )

Bungie went and made average destiny games. Bungie’s choice to go.

Xbox One Launch was not good.

Mass Effect is not owned by MS so what do you mean letting go? They publisher choice to go on other platforms.

Xbox Live Arcade should come back.

RROD bringing up old news? Microsoft already paid the price and cost them billion. Free repairs and extended warranties.

Crackdown IP could have been good ultimately developers make the game the games are bad because of bad developers.

Cortana so trying something new and to compete MS should apologies for?

Scalebound was a shame.

Rare is a shame.

Windows Phone at least they tried in the smartphone market.

Halo can be reinvigorated with Infinite.

Hard drives should be standard and easy to replace agree.

Kinect made them alot of money but died down. Kinect uses ended up in medicine, security and military.

Whats wrong with games appearing on PC? Play anywhere benefits gamers and not deluded fan boy gamers.

Basically article reeks of entitlement but few good points.

Fist4achin2515d ago

Every company pulled a few boners. My biggest gripe about xbox was their lack of games. The OG Xbox and 360 started so strong with their exclusives, i dont know what happened. All they had to do was bring back a few of those titles and things would have been better off for them.

MasterCornholio2515d ago

And some pulled an Xbone.

:P

LOL

Poopmist2515d ago

Why would they apologize anyway? It's best to just not make those mistakes again and ramp up 1st party development(which it seems like they're doing).

Godmars2902515d ago

Only, if you really look, they keep making the same/similar mistakes.

Not licensing key parts for the OG Xbox which meant its production costs never went down is akin to the design flaws in the 360 that caused RROD. Kinect is in the same family of "tech not ready" eff ups as cloud servers.

They may not need to apologize, but they damn well need to take a step back and examine a project before putting it out much less hyping it.

Godmars2902515d ago

Bungine bailed because MS wanted them to *ONLY* Halo. They'd likely still be a MS studio if the reins weren't so tight.

The XB1 launch had tons of warning. Was done regardless.

MS should have bought Bioware or the ME IP.

RROD seems to have showed MS's standard operating procedure, get it out ASAP, fix it later, only rather than the usual software, like Windows ME/7/8/10, the 360 was hardware.

Crackdown(3)'s fault was that it was a showroom title for cloud distribution when the tech was - is - years away from what thy needed it to do.

Cortana was just dumb. Example of MS sniffing their own farts. Believing their own hype.

Scalebound was SP round peg forced into MP square hole.

Rare was put in a gimp suit. If you don't know what a gimp suit is, you don't want to know what a gimp suit is.

Windows Phone - Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha...

Infinite reinvigorating Halo (As anything but a shooter) - Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha...

Kinect: MS standard operating procedure.

Whats wrong with games appearing on PC?
Um, hello? 50% drop in sales and effectively 3rd place, likely well due to the console not being needed.

mijayire2514d ago

Where did you get 50% drop in sales? Out of thin air? You are forgetting that the average gamer does not have a gaming pc nor the specs to run games that appear on Xbox One. Not everyone has a gaming pc hence primary console gamers game on consoles.

Do you believe everyone in the world has powerful gaming pcs to run games like Forza 7 ? Etc No. Most general consumers buy laptops, desktop that have integrated graphics card that no where are capable of high end gaming.

CorndogBurglar2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

Show me the numbers that 50% of all MS game sales are bought for PC and not Xbone.

Look, I felt shafted by MS when they revealed their Xbone and to this day I still haven't bought one. But let's not make things up to try and prove a point. MS already has more than enough things to be legitimately criticized for.

Godmars2902514d ago

@mijayire:
https://www.forbes.com/site...

The second paragraph. And yeah, its only 48%, but since the 50% was next to only thing that registered to you, I expect further nitpicking.

"Do you believe everyone in the world has powerful gaming pcs to run games like Forza 7?"
Of course not. Yet whether or not MS - or you - ever register it, they have always - ALWAYS - been focused on a specific type of gamer. And no matter how they try to advertise Xbox they will only ever appeal to that that specific group.

And that group are the type of gamers who have powerful gaming PCs.

Tross2515d ago

Some of the items on this list they only have to apologize to their shareholders for. Some did directly inconvenience gamers while others (including this list's number 1) really just encouraged people to get a PS4 instead.

CorndogBurglar2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

And if MS would have came out and apologized to gamers for their poor decisions then MAYBE I would have given an Xbone a chance. But they didn't. So I had no problem buying my first Sony console after that.

I had an original Xbox and a 360. But when they announced their Xbone they way they did and their PR was as poor and terrible sounding as it was, it made my decision very easy. And I've been laughing at their struggles all gen.

I would love a return to form for MS. But until they open their eyes and start thinking like a VIDEO GAME COMPANY again, I'm out.

GtPawnSacrifices2515d ago

Bungie were gonna walk regardless.
BioWare owns Mass Effect (MS simply had publishing rights to #1, same as w/ Remedy & Allan Wake ip)
#6 tho, I’d agree with. But that also links to the X1’s bombed launch and ultimately having MS change Xbox’s management.

gangsta_red2515d ago

Good list, for me it would be RRoD and abandoning Xbox Live Arcade which imo was absolutely terrific. Also discontinuing XNA and it's huge community.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio54d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing54d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9254d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit54d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing54d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9253d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
