How The Heck Did Anyone Use An Nintendo 64 Controller?!

Let’s face it, the Nintendo 64 controller was an absolute nightmare. Aside from the fact that it was monstrously huge (probably to accommodate the plug-in rumble pak) the human race just doesn’t have enough hands to make the thing work.

"monstrously huge"

ever heard of the duke?

_SilverHawk_2505d ago (Edited 2505d ago )

Over 40 years of making controllers the best controller Nintendo ever launched with a console was the gamecube controller thats ergonomically designed. Its ridiculous that there needs to be a separate controller made to be used on a Nintendo console all the time especially when the systems are always overpriced for what is offered.

rlow12505d ago

Except the little yellow joystick could get in the way sometimes....but overall it was good.

rainslacker2505d ago

I think the author thought you were supposed to be able to use the analog and d-pad at the same time. Realistically, you would need more than two hands to use all the buttons on any modern controller, because one only has two thumbs

Segata2505d ago

Switch pro controller is so much better than Gamecubes. GCN controller is so overrated and honestly kinda sucks. Looks like a kids toy and sucks for modern games. It's good for smash and not much else.

FallenAngel19842504d ago

Over 40 years?

The first controller Nintendo made was in 1983

1983-2019 is 36 years

bouzebbal2504d ago

Nintendo have always made great controllers (except NES which small and sharp edged)..
This article is pure nonsense.. Analog in the middle is great idea

It wasn’t that unwieldy, although it is a fun peculiar controller to look back on

DarXyde2505d ago

The word you're looking for is "cumbersome".

It was definitely unique. Thinking back, you had to choose between D-pad and analog stick. I remember playing Super Smash Bros. and taunting where I quickly moved my left hand to tap the L- button and placed it back into position immediately to shield and dodge.

It was the only real controller that taught muscle memory through baptism by fire.

ReVibe2505d ago

There you go. If you were passionate about your N64 and played competitively, that effer hardened your twitch reflexes.

banogax2504d ago

Since I began with my online business, I am raking $42.4 every fifteen minutes. And, as unbelievable it sounds, doable for you is, as well, cause I’ve never had a job as easy as this one. Everyone can do it, with no exception. I suggest you, Don’t pass-up this hot chance, which you can do even in your spare time for some extra bonus bucks to your main source of income, because you might regret it afterwards. Anyway, here’s what you have to do to get started …...

A terrible controller in the grand scheme

fr0sty2505d ago

It ain't a lie, ergonomically it was nightmare, forcing you to switch positions to do certain tasks, and the analog stick would grind to dust down inside the controller eventually, and it would stop working right.

Babadook72505d ago

“A terrible controller in the grand scheme”

Terrible compared to those that came after? That’s an unfair way to view history.

TheFirstClassic2505d ago

It still feels fine to me, although I do have small hands.

Vegamyster2505d ago

It really depended on the game, my only big issue with them was the durability on the analog stick, they'd wear out fairly quickly if you used them regularly making it a choir to play most games.

Wasn't THAT hard as most games only ever required the joystick or the D-pad (often times they were just 2 ways to perform the same function, or the D-pad just mirrored the C-buttons funtion so you could play left handed) and very rarely ever both.

The N64 controller was made by aliens, for aliens

gangsta_red2505d ago (Edited 2505d ago )

It was one of the worse controllers made. It may have worked for games specifically made for Nintendo, but God help you for any third party games or ports from PS

Lol, looking at the hand placement in the image, it's hilarious to read about symmetrical thumb placements.

MasterCornholio2505d ago (Edited 2505d ago )

I actually find symmetrical thumb place with controllers like the DualShock for example.

So having a controller that requires symmetrical thumb placement for the analog sticks isn't exactly a bad thing.

You know what the N64 requires? A asymmetrical hand placement which makes it awkward as heck to use.

gangsta_red2505d ago

I find the symmetrical argument extremely confusing considering your thumb placements are no where near as separated as some make it.

I find the duelshock analog sticks sometimes cumbersome because I've actually got my thumbs together a few times.

But in no way did I ever think the PS or Xbox controller were hard to use or straining on my thumbs because of analog placements.

As for the n64 controller, it's the button layout that made the controller extremely difficult, especially for any game that wasn't a Mario 64 clone. Then you had the horrible dpad which was hardly used but still horrible.

Then the added rumble pack that from I remember weighed a good ton

It wasn't a good controller and it's funny that Nintendo went on to make an even more terrible controller with the GameCube.

DarXyde2504d ago

"It wasn't a good controller and it's funny that Nintendo went on to make an even more terrible controller with the GameCube."

I have a hard time believing you're not trolling. Gamecube has one of the best controllers, bar none. To this day, that controller is great.

MasterCornholio2505d ago

Never had an issue with the DualShock thumb placement myself but I do have problems with the Xbox controllers stick placement.

But I guess it's all down to personal preference and I don't consider either controller superior just different.

But I do agree that the N64 controller wasn't very good. And I also agree that adding the rumble afterwards was just dumb.

DazaMc2505d ago

The PS1 controller didn't even have analog sticks when this came out never mind rumble!

Five Games I'd Love To See On the Neo Geo AES+

These classics need to make a return.

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle41d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7541d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.
