It's over. The PS5 also having backward compatibility with PS4 games sealed Xbox's fate away. It's gonna be a repeat of this gen next gen because most people will not switch sides because they will want to keep their library going into next gen.

I saw a negative headline for xbox, I saw it was from Windows Central, I wondered if they tried to spin the factual decrease in sales into something positive, they didn't disappoint...

Nothing against the site in general, but the whole article feels like damage control and trying to make up excuses and reasons for xbox's downfall this generation. Pretty much what I'd expect from a MS orientated website tbh.

Well Phil Spencer has been doing his best to make the Xbox console itself irrelevant.

The only way they can rescue the Xbox brand is -
1) By having the Scarlett (or whatever it'll be called) launch at an affordable price, $350 to $400 say, anything over that and it's a niche product that's too expensive to buy for yourself or your kids for Xmas.
2) Have actual exclusive games that you can only play on an Xbox, not a PC too. Games sell systems, Nintendo and Sony are fully aware of this idea.
3) Release the Scarlett in more countries, the PS sells better not only because of better exclusives and marketing but because it's sold in more countries. More people around the world have access to the PS than the Xbox brand.
4) Advertise better, it might be well marketed in the USA but in Europe and elsewhere in the world the marketing is a joke.

But this isn't going to happen is it? MS care more about offering "services" where you can play their games on any device rather than trying to dominate the console market. In 5 years time we'll likely be playing Halo and Gears on Playstations. The Scarlett will sell less than the Xbox One.
Thing is, for every game sold on a console the manufacturers (Sony, MS, Nintendo) get a percentage of the profit regardless of the publisher. So MS is making money directly from every copy of GTA, FIFA, COD etc sold on an Xbox, getting consumers to buy your console and games for it therefore is a great long term investment, MS just don't seem to see this perspective. Sony and Nintendo certainly do that's why you can't get their self published games on PC or competing consoles. And it works for them, MS are just so short sighted and want to make a quick buck through service models rather than a closed gaming ecosystem. And this strategy of theirs is diminishing the significance of the Xbox brand.

MS are their own worst enemy because of short term greed.

The Xbox future is streaming. Not consoles. They know that.

This gen is been over. Next gen is over in the console sense, but who knows maybe they will release a super cheap streaming only console and claim victory by counting them in their console sales. All and all for me, xbox has lost its identity and along with it the “console war” in its original sense.

Just bought a one x as a 4k player for my new Samsung q9. Never had any interest in xbox, decided to get the cheap gamepass/gold deal and holy ****, forza 7 on this tv looks next gen. Its a proper bit of kit the one x, loads of stuff in proper 4k, 4k blu rays but don't see a single exclusive worth buying, or anything on the level of God of war or spiderman. Microsoft seem like they just don't care about software.

The console war hasn't been a thing since sega and Nintendo, it's you daft fans that keep dreaming this crap up in your heads.

I couldn't care who's on top, middle or bottom, all I see from the devs is they're all winners getting there own bit of the pie. It's my choice what I play and enjoy whatever I choose to play on whatever console I choose to play it on.

You people who keep trying to make it a competition need to wake up for once, all the devs think about is selling us there brand and making money off of us.

There isn't a war. Sony had a plan set in silicon many years ago and like a speeding train, you aren't going to stop it or overtake it. Xbox had a good go and were ahead at one point way back, but only because of exclusive or timed dlc. Sony has the games and the hardware. Just stop being butt hurt about it.

As an owner of all consoles I truly dont care who won "the console war". I will say however that "if" MS is in it to win it, next gen will not be such a big gap between PS and Xbox. I mean it all started with the 2013 reveal, then the price tag, the power and not many exclusives. MS has since fixed almost all of that. Next gen console will either be equally as powerful as PS5 or more powerful, they bought a bunch of 1st party studios so the AAA exclusive issue should clear up, their not going to force anything on anyone and their new console will probably be no more than $499.
I'd like to think MS learned their lesson and we will soon see.

Console wars would be boring if it were just Nintendo and Sony. The two fan bases aren't generally at odds with one another most of the time. Even when they are, it's usually short lived, and pointless. Sony and Nintendo have two completely different products to offer gamers, and they compliment and supplement one another well. Sony and Ms have two directly competing products so more room to compare.

microsoft is lucky that ps3 wasn't a great success, otherwise the last xbox could've been the 360 after the disastrous RROD... but somehow they continued after that epic fail and the rest is history.
btw the gaming branch of microsoft is in loss, so xbox closure is around the corner, no matter how many companies phil enslave with money or how powerful this next xbox is if a very good PC with a little more of money is 2x stronger and reads the same games.

MS has lost every single generation since they entered the console market so if MS plan was to dominate and be the industry leader they have failed miserably. The 360 was their most successful console and they still finished last IMO there has never really been much of a war.

XB is just hanging around,nothing more than that.

They're backed into a corner, which hopefully will mean that they'll fight harder and make more games that AREN'T just Halo, Gears and Forza. They'd better not squander Double Fine like they did with Rare as well.

Wuchang is great. Nine Sols didn’t have a physical copy so I never played it but I’ve heard good things so I will check it out. I stopped playing sports games many years ago when before the card dlc’s or whatever they’re called.
