Joy-Con Drift Is Becoming A Real Problem On The Switch

For months, Nintendo Switch users have been plagued by what’s become known as “Joy-Con drift.” Although they’re not touching the joystick on their Nintendo Switch controller, the console still thinks it’s moving. With no permanent fix being offered by Nintendo, they’re just sick of it.

Neonridr2514d ago

my Switch is 2+ years old and I don't have any drift. But the Right trigger on one of my Dualshock controllers is over sensitive..

YMMV with these problems. I hate when people make it seem like everyone experiences problems with their controllers. You always hear about the bad ones, not the good ones.

Redlife2g2514d ago

You've gotten amazingly lucky. I have 4 other friends with the switch and we all experienced this problem. Lucky enough they sell kits on Amazon to fix it yourself rather then sending your joy con in to Nintendo for a couple weeks.

_SilverHawk_2514d ago

Always the fanboys to come around to say they've never had a problem that's rampant on a device. I've had the same drifting problem on both of my switches.

porkChop2514d ago

@Silver

Are people not allowed to say they haven't had an issue? Only people with the problem are allowed to talk about it? I haven't had issues either. Not everyone has.

darthv722514d ago

I havent had any issues with drift either.

then again I dont have a switch.

No Way2514d ago

I've yet to have any issue with my Switch; granted it's not that old (if that even matters?).. I've only had any kind of "drift" issues on one of my Xbox One controllers, but it's not bad either.

Neonridr2514d ago

I am willing to wager more people have working units than don't. So you are amazingly unlucky I would say. Do you honestly think that >50% have this issue. Again, you don't hear people saying they don't have problems, you only see forums of people with problems. Just like the rubber on a DS4 analog stick wearing off. Mine have never done that, but plenty of people did have it happen. And in my above example, my right trigger (R2) is overly sensitive on one of my controllers so much so that even resting my finger on the trigger causes it to depress. But my other 2 dual shocks are perfectly fine. So again, YMMV.

Oh some people have some controller problems, I guess EVERYONE who owns a Switch has the same issues. Oh there were some reports of a unit bending under heat, I guess EVERYONE has that problem.

The stretching that goes on here is just flat out ridiculous. Then you get everyone else coming out of the woodwork claiming their Switches don't work when they don't even own one.

RizBiz2514d ago

A couple weeks? Damn... it takes three days here in Japan.

Zeldafan642514d ago

My original joycons would probably still be fine if I hadn't dropped them. They worked fine for a year and a half then I dropped them and it started to mess up.

Stick drift is a real problem on the Dual Shock

SierraGuy2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

Ya I thought so too being on my 3rd DS4 with horrid drift, jitters, and complete loss of control until reading an article stating an external HDD plugged into the front USB 3.0 causes Bluetooth interference (through the wire).

Disconnected my 1TB external storage... problem solved.

Note** before disassembling DS4 try disconnecting external HDD when not needed.

TeamIcoFan2514d ago

Had to get a pair of these to fix the thumbsticks on my DS4, rubber on them was wearing out.
https://www.gamestop.com/ps...
(This isn't the one I got, the one I got was around 5 bucks and came with two pairs, one black one blue, and were generic looking. Got the job done though.)

Segata2514d ago

My DS4 never drifted but the controller that came with my PS4 fell apart after 2 years. I have never had a controller do that on me. Just about all my controllers from the past 30 years still work. So I just replaced it with the newer DS4 in 2017 and it's been just fine.

ShadowWolf7122514d ago

I wish my issues were Drift. First my charger port died in my Switch (and when I sent it in for repairs the "fix" somehow magically erased all my data) and now the speakers have ceased all audio output.

Angyobangyo2514d ago

"my switch my switch my switch my switch" ......yeah we get it, YOUR switch is fine. I guess everyone with this issue is a lair.

I hate it when these white knight Nintendo fanboys crawl out to defend legit issues and complain about those who experience legit issues regarding their joycons that is widespread. I don't care how old your Switch is and this has nothing to do with the Dualshock. I had my system less for time than yours and got the same left stick drifting issue, like so many others have.

I bought a replacement kit from Amazon and fixed it, but never needed to vent online....until today because you claim I and others probably don't even own one. Basically, just be quiet, there is no problem whatsoever,

"Then you get everyone else coming out of the woodwork claiming their Switches don't work when they don't even own one."

So by your logic more than half of the Switch users needs to have these issues before you recognise that it is a problem. I doubt even if Nintendo acknowledges it you 'll fail to agree. If even 3% of owners are getting the issue it is a problem. Roughly 34million Switches have been sold that would account for a sizeable amount for concern.

Neonridr2513d ago

no, but based on the comments here everyone likes to act like everyone has problems with their Switches. In fact I rarely have any problems with any of my hardware. I'd have to go back to my OG 360 before I had a real hardware issue.

I never once said it's not an issue, I am sharing my story, I didn't realize I had to have a problem with my Switch in order to comment.

dantesparda2514d ago

I've only had my Switch for a yr and a half, barely play it and already my left joy-con has drift and both joy cons keep making the clicking on/off sound when they are connected to the sides of the Switch, as if they are connecting and then disconnecting constantly. I think this is complete and utter bullsh1t and makes the systems build quality seem cheap! No controllers that are only a yr and half old with light use be already showing so much signs of wear. The only other controller I've ever had drift on was my Xbox 360's but that was after 5 plus yrs of heavy use. My DS4's and Xbox controllers are from 2013 and 2015 and still kicking strong. Shame on you Nintendo and your cheap a$$ quality and shame on the fanboys that try and defend this sh1t.

Segata2514d ago

Mine hasn't yet but I rarely use it. The design flaw much like RROD will affect all of them at some point. Not a matter of if but when.

rainslacker2514d ago

I've had mine for little over a year, and haven't had any problems. Play it quite a bit too.

Teflon022514d ago

Mine Drifts, but it's not bad as of now. It's rare that it does it. For me, it's usually when I'm playing like Mario O or Zelda it happened. I've had my switch since May of the year it released. I don't play it alot though. Also my drift isn't something that keeps going just a once in a while thing where I guess the con isn't getting the position right on the release? WHo knows. But it definitely happened a few times and I barely play mine. I play it so little that I bought Mario Maker 2 and still haven't played it at all lol. Yet I have the issue. Don't think it's extreme but it's something to acknowledge. My biggest issues that no one ever admits to the issues with Nintendo products until someone or a site makes it into a issue while they'll run with anything MS or especially Sony related. Like I last had the drift happen like half a year ago as I haven't touched my switch since like Jan outside putting MM2 in and putting it down

Ratchet752514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

Except the right trigger sensitivity on ps4 can be easily fixed. There are hundreds of vids on youtube to fix that. It's a mechanical issue.
Joycon drift on the other hand is mostly an electronic issue and very hard if not impossible to fix. Most of the time the analog stick are damaged or the Bluetooth sensors are faulty.
I'm on my second Joycon pair already.

Christopher2513d ago

That whole last paragraph of yours is essentially trying multiple ways to reason why it's not a problem.

YMMV assumes it's an opinion, as that's how it is utilized. But when a higher than 2% fail rate occurs, that is problematic for any electronic device. That's not a YMMV, that's a flaw.

You then reference an exaggeration of "people make it seem like everyone experiences problems". You leave people unquantified, but that's its point. But it tends to be taken in context as 'most' or the 'majority' when used without a quantifier (some, those, people who tapdance, etc.). It's intended to make people the issue here, and not the issue itself, of which those people are experiencing. It's pushing the issue onto people.

Then, you just relate the issues to the fact that people complain only when there are issues and don't praise there being no issues. That's just lazy and we can say this about anything. "You only hear about the car crashes, not when there aren't car crashes." This goes against the whole concept of the complaint itself, which is to be informative to the consumer. If there were no complaints about the joycons, then the reasoning would be that there are no issues with them, not that people just aren't talking about how good they are and therefore they must not be good. Functioning is good, but problems are bad.

Neonridr2513d ago

no.. your mileage may vary means that different people experience different things at different times. My switch is perfectly fine, others might have issues.

Based on the comments here, we are led to believe that every Switch out there is defective when in actuality it's not even close. We only hear about the problems, not the good ones, because people aren't complaining when things work as they should only when they don't.

I am not saying the issue doesn't exist, but leave it to the N4G community to take anything that paints MS or Nintendo in a bad light and run with it. It's overblown is what I am saying. Mine is perfectly fine, am I honestly the only person out there? I doubt it. Yes problems are bad, but exaggerating them is even worse.

Christopher2513d ago (Edited 2513d ago )

***your mileage may vary***

Is based on opinion of one's own experience. But you ignore the overarching issue of fail rate. Please read again. Included in YMMV is the importance or one's desired use of the vehicle. A car can get 50 miles to the gallon, but if a person blasts AC, then it won't. That's based on a choice, an opinion, on a subjective element. It's opinion based in much how a person drives a car is based on how they choose to drive it.

But, if more than 2% of people have gas leaks in their car, driving down mileage, that's not a YMMV. That's a flaw.

See the difference?

***Based on the comments here, we are led to believe that every Switch out there is defective***

You are the first comment. Most comments assert there is an issue, not that everyone experiences them. Someone saying it needs to be addressed because it's a problem or the like doesn't assert it's everyone, only that it's enough that it is quantified as a problem.

This is your perception of the comments, not the reality.

***but leave it to the N4G community to take anything that paints MS or Nintendo in a bad light and run with it.***

Ah. So any complaints must be fanboy driven? Does that mean that Kotaku's article on the issue is any less valuable as they are the one saying it's a problem and people here are just agreeing.

I think that comment of yours solidifies my points well as you are not responding to the issue, just your perception of certain people and how they may or may not agree with problems. Which, in of itself, helps to obfuscate the level of concern by the problem by focusing on something that isn't even the problem to begin with.

***that sucks dude. I have 2 sets and haven't noticed it myself. Luck of the draw I guess?***

Really? I guess Nintendo can just come out and tell people to get luckier in their purchases.

Neonridr2513d ago (Edited 2513d ago )

@Christopher - Kotaku is now reliable? Give me a break.. seriously stop.

How rough is the person on their controller? Do they drop them? Do they take as good of care of them as I do? Your mileage will vary based on the playing conditions. All of my gaming hardware is still in near mint condition. Why? Because I take good care of it. Others mash their controllers or throw them and then wonder why they start to fail. Other people take their blu rays and leave them out, or leave them face down on a surface and wonder where scratches come from, etc, etc.

Your mileage may vary also means that sometimes you get a defective product. I bought a brand new PC power supply last year and it was DOA. Does that mean that all power supplies from this company are DOA? Absolutely not. Defects happen, we all know that. My point is that we are now suddenly acting like a huge chunk of the userbase is experiencing this based off this article claiming it's a major issue. It's a major issue for SOME. Just like a faulty engine in a car is a major issue for those experiencing it. But for the majority of us, it's not an issue because it isn't happening to us.

I never once said it wasn't a problem, I was sharing my personal experiences, I was trying to show the other side of the coin so that everyone wasn't all doom and gloom and thinking that every controller was destined to fail. Obviously I would hope Nintendo would fix any issues they have with their hardware in any capacity no matter how big or small. Again, don't put words in my mouth for simply sharing my side of my own story. Sorry it doesn't align with all the cool kids.

Christopher2513d ago

***Again, don't put words in my mouth for simply sharing my side of my own story. Sorry it doesn't align with all the cool kids.***

You mean words like: "leave it to the N4G community to take anything that paints MS or Nintendo in a bad light and run with it."

And people in this thread are pretty level-headed overall.

By the way, I'm also one of the lucky ones, but I was also lucky with my 360. Doesn't mean the many complaints I've seen over the last year about this issue are overblown. And I'm not going to make a comment just to say I'm lucky. That isn't the issue. Your issue is your perception of the problem based on people on N4G that you disagree with and it adds nothing of value here nor does it address the issue, only how you feel.

Normally I'd agree with neon but yeah....I'm on my 3rd set of joy-cons and I'm already experiencing the issue on the newest set I bought just over a month ago. I have recalibrate every 15-20 minutes.

Neonridr2513d ago

Ive had my switch for bout a year and got the drift about a couple months ago. And i dont even use my switch a ton, maybe 1-2hrs per session but thats about it. Even my pro controller has some signs of wearing out. Inexcusable for $60+ controllers.

Segata2514d ago

Joycon drift I get but the pro? I have had mine since 2017 and used it a ton and it's still just fine. You either got a bad batch or are really tough on them.

ZaWarudo2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

Yeah i had this goddamn issue happen to me and my Switch was only about 9 months old. jfc Nintendo.

I fixed it by replacing the joystick.

Edit: You can buy the joystick replacement on Amazon for around $10. It saved me $70 on a replacement Joycon.

PhoenixUp2514d ago

Not getting a Switch until this gets resolved

gamer78042514d ago

same here, waiting for the switch pro. my friends that have a switch all have this same drifting problem after a year+ of use.

Elda2514d ago

I don't blame you, especially seeing this is a common problem & those joy cons are costly.

Spenok2513d ago

If the Switch Lite is anything to go by, they're likely to use the same crappy joystick setup with any new systems as well.

EddieNX 2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

Not even gunna lie, my day 1 Switch the right joycon kept disconnecting, kept having to reconnect it. Replaced the right joycon and have had no issues since.

I absolutely love Nintendo GAMES, but sometimes the HARDWARE leaves something to be desired.

I am first and foremost a massive fan of Nintendo's software, not nessecarily their hardware.

Nintendo is my favourite gaming company , but some of their consoles have suffered from underpowered or having gimmicks like WiiU Gamepad or 3DS 3D...

EddieNX 2514d ago

Cringey but true.

Nintendos software is amazing

Their hardware is often questionable.

CBaoth2513d ago

not cringe, bravo Eddie. One of the few Ninty fans here to have the balls for acknowledging issues of his favorite company. He's the only fan here on N4G who called the Switch a handheld, instead of being hoodwinked by Nintendo's PR. Look at the OP's comment. His usual deflection of critical analysis on Nintendo into something negative about Sony (straw man fallacy) is getting quite old and undermines any credibility he might have had.

Neonridr2513d ago

yet how many NES/SNES consoles are out there working perfectly fine? Nintendo's hardware is almost always top notch, honestly I don't even know what you are talking about.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.
