How Nintendo got the Switch Lite completely wrong (and why it’s not even a Switch anymore)

Eggplante breaks down just how they feel Nintendo got the Switch Lite hardware wrong, and what they should have done instead.

The Lite should have been compatible with the dock, just not included in the package. If you want it to actually "Switch", you buy the dock separately. Everyone wins.

badz1492512d ago

I think that was what everybody was expecting. but apparently, for $100 less, a mini HDMI port is too expensive for Nintendo although they are already selling the dock for a pathetically expensive $100!

Knushwood Butt2512d ago

Yes, but as I said in another post, that would mean there is almost no reason for the original, overpriced, cash cow Switch to exist.

Nintendo would be throwing money away.

Vegamyster2512d ago

Or a mini HDMI, cheap and lots of people already have them.

porkChop2512d ago

It would make sense for families that already have a Switch too, and would negate the game compatibility issues.

FallenAngel19842512d ago

I’d have preferred Nintendo to just drop the price of the Switch to $250 or even $200 instead

Elda2512d ago

Possibly next year, usually console developers usually drop the original price of their consoles at the 3rd year of being on the market.

porkChop2512d ago

$250 would definitely have been feasible at this point. That would have been more logical to me.

FallenAngel19842512d ago

@ Elda

Consoles drop their price within their first or second year. Rarely do consoles go three years without having a price cut

Traecy2512d ago (Edited 2512d ago )

It's usually by the 3rd sometimes the 4th year.

Elda2512d ago (Edited 2512d ago )

There's a possibility by the second year but not in the first year, most consoles drop their prices by 3rd & 4th year.

FallenAngel19842512d ago (Edited 2512d ago )

@ Tracey & Elda

No it’s usually the first or second year

Just look at the past history of console price cuts to see clear proof of this

Sgt_Slaughter2512d ago

From a business standpoint that doesn't make sense right now. Why lower the price when it's selling very well at $300? It'll go down in price more than likely around the Switch Pro release.

Imortus_san2512d ago

You can get one in the used market for those prices every day of your life, and with a bit of luck much lower, I got mine for 115€.

BigTrain2511d ago

You have to remember that all of the console makers are trying on the Apple model where they dont drop the price of the existing hit product but instead come out with alternatives (Switch lite) and hold out the launch price knowing that the software titles soon to be released should keep the hardware in demand. Really sucks.

It's for a different market. This is for all the old 3DS people who haven't upgraded yet. It's a cheaper path for them to take, especially for people who don't plan on docking it. Also great for a second system for the kids.

Protagonist2512d ago (Edited 2512d ago )

I remember when the 3DS XL was announced, nintendo fanboys literally said "it is for old people who can not see very well and want to play casual games."

My point is: do not assume who it is for. Nintendo made this gimped switch to sell well, for everyone and obviously to make most money possible.

ifinitygamer2512d ago

It’s as simple as a software solution to enable USB C to function as video out though. At the very least, they should have done this. That would technically mean this console still able to “switch”

TheFirstClassic2512d ago

Funny how divided people are on this. I'm not really on board but as a business decision I think it will work out.

Elda2512d ago

Imo seeing that it's missing several features it should be a price tag of $150 including knowing one can't switch the joycons or switch from handheld to playing on tv it should be called something else.

Neonridr2511d ago

it plays Switch games, no? Calling it something else would only split the userbase and confuse the masses as to what it is.

Elda2511d ago

Not really especially folks that are informative or somewhat when it comes to gaming devices.

@Elda - you think the majority of people are informed?

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle32d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
