Games man. The Vita was a really cool piece of hardware, but would I recommend one to the average gamer? No way. There are millions of people, though, that are going to want to play Pokemon, Mario Kart, Mario, Animal Crossing, Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon(imposter!), etc. The price just needs to be a little lower to capture those impulse buyers, and those on the fence. 3DS was failing hard until its first major price drop. After everyone bought it, the games came rolling in.

Certainly some of the NICEST... once you get emulation involved it becomes a little unfair, You can do a whole lot of homebrew on a 3DS XL with an IPS screen and I'd put it int he same ballpark with a lot more native games.

I am a die hard Vita fan though.

Vita best for native psp and ps1 gaming. Even SNES emulation gets pretty bad on it though. 3DS is great for NES/SNES/GBA injects, and native DS. The Switch is an amazing emulation machine as well.

I think this should be more than $100 off the original. For starters the screen is smaller. No joy cons. Etc. It comes with half of the switch features, so it should be half the price. It can't even switch.
Got nothing against Nintendo making a handheld only product that's cheaper and more for kids and casuals (Needed now that 3DS is retired), but it's too expensive.

Neither one of those details is included and frankly neither one of those make a bit of sense.

A higher resolution display and improved hardware, namely with the concessions made, wouldn't result in improved battery life.

1080p screen for what? Most games barely reach 720p on handheld mode. IMHO, the product is overpriced and should be sold at $149, it loses too many functions compared to original switch.

Well there you have it, the switch has been a handheld all along, just one of that has a hollow plastic dock that connects it to your TV.
Now hopefully the haters can understand why it has as much processing power as it does and not as much as say, a large, stationary home console.

The Switch is a powerful handheld.

Maybe Nintendo fan boys can stop going around acting like it's going to get all the high profile AAA games of this gen and next then? Maybe they can stop acting like it's a full on current or next gen console, and just admit it's a portable that can be docked to the TV?

Just a thought.

People understand why the processing power is what it is, and why it sells so well, it's some of the Nintendo fans who want to argue that it's not a portable.

Dropping the dock alone and no possibility of using one is already a $100 difference. Plus zero price drops for the Switch since launch.

Switch Lite definitely isn't worth $199.

There are reports of a 1080p screen and longer battery life with docked performance on the go. This would offset the cuts a bit.

30 mins extra battery is what's in the article and that's From Nintendo itself.
Like others have pointed out, a lot of Switch games don't reach 1080p anyway. I play my Switch in handheld mode most of the time and 720p is just fine. 1080p on an even smaller screen? Ridiculous.

I stand corrected on the 1080p screen, it is 720p.

As for battery, it is about an hour more. An actual test had Zelda go for 4 hours on Lite and 3 hours on OG Switch.

Joycons aren't included, so it's....199 plus 70 bucks for the joycons....a whopping 30 dollars discount compared to the normal switch....which includes the joycons.

And the primary benefit is that you get 30 minutes more battery life?

Worse dude it doesnt support disconnected joycons, its one piiece and does not support tabletop mode. it doesnt work with joecons or pro controllers or in any other sense.

i think we was all expecting a liter version made to be portable only was coming. kinda also plays into the idea's they are also looking into a potential higher spec version that is TV only as well.
this will sell amazingly well i know a lot of people that didnt want to buy a switch as they only wanted a portable game device so didnt want to pay the extra they felt they was being forced to pay just for the added ability to play on their TV as well.
also for kids this will be a huge seller parents are more likely to say buy their 2 kids 1 of these each at what most likely ends up being the same cost as the main switch's price for car travels etc.

Nintendo has always owned the handheld market nobody has even come close to their dominance and i think to really push this they could start to bring the 3ds lineups over to switch

iPhone 7 has better battery life and better screen resolution. You can get one for less than a Switch. Easily.

Plus iPhone 7 still receives updates and support. It's even guaranteed to run the next big version of iOS.

Lol. These comments are interesting. Idk, maybe it’s just me, but Apple gets away with charging more for their products with minimal upgrades year over year, but Nintendo gets shunned for offering a new handheld at a reasonable price to play BOTW, Wolf 1 and 2, Doom, Mario Kart, and such awesome indie classics like Undertale, Iconoclasts, Celeste or Slay the Spire, just to name a few. I love my Xbox One X and have bought all the Wolf games on it, including 2 and thats the best way to experience that game. But i love playing it when i go out if town. Yea, the controls aren’t as good as it is in my One, but I’m happy to have that option, and i knew what i was purchasing, lower frame rate, resolution, etc. The smaller screen just makes for a crisper resolution. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. The Lite will attract a certain crowd. I think it’s just fine.

Its part of the "Switch family" just like 2DS is part of the "3DS family". They can't actually remove the word 'Switch' because it'll confuse buyers, thinking its a different platform with different games.

So even though its dumb, there's no way around it.

We'll see teardown eventually. I bet this chip is clocked a bit higher than the original model. 16nm instead of twenty, less power consumption, better heat efficiency so they can do away with how they had it under clocked before. And with the smaller screen, it might have a slightly lower resolution as well, so we'll see significant improvement in handheld mode visuals. I think another $20 price drop and it'll sell like the Switch did at launch.

Higher clock speeds, no doubt. The Switch is severely underclocked while in handheld mode normally, due to battery life and comfort/heating concerns. I am pretty certain that the handheld clock speeds will be closer to the docked speeds in the original model, perhaps even higher. Modders (myself included) have been using OC for months now with it, and Nintendo has already experimented with it for loading times, etc. With a more power efficient chip, those heating concerns are gone. So you get that extra half hour battery life, with much greater handheld performance. The screen is about 12 percent smaller as well, so if they reduce the pixel count by that much, it will still be pixel perfect, which also allows for further game improvements. Wait for Digital Foundry comparisons in older (and newer) games; there will be a notable difference in visual quality and stable frame rate. Also, when have purely handheld consoles ever had rumble? That's as much of a durability and engineering problem as it is battery. I'm not saying it's amazing, this is just the purpose of the console. Cheaper manufacturing costs, better performance, and more attractive to a certain market of consumers due to lower price and smaller size.

The reason It can't dock to a TV is that the new chip is smaller and less powerful. They removed a lot of things for 60$ games.
