Which Studios Could Sony Realistically Acquire?

PushSquare: “While it’s never made quite the same song and dance about it as Microsoft has in recent years, Sony’s history is peppered with developer acquisitions designed to strengthen its first-party portfolio. It purchased Dutch developer Guerrilla Games in 2004 and long-time partner Sucker Punch in 2011. In the same general era, it also picked up LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule – and let’s not forget that studios like Naughty Dog were originally independent as well.

While the Japanese giant has outright purchased some teams, it’s also established several organically. The likes of PixelOpus – currently working on the promising Concrete Genie – and God of War developer Sony Santa Monica were formed to bolster the organisation’s exclusive output. But with current PlayStation boss Jim Ryan frequently hinting that the platform holder may be looking to add more teams to its roster, we figured it might be fun to consider the likeliest candidates.”

Remedy, Insomniac, Bluepoint.

Nitrowolf22531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

I’d say bluepoint our of those three are most likely. Remedy only recently went multiplat and have been pretty open about wanting to keep doing that and with Ted Price over at insomniac (nothing against his he’s great) their stance is still most likely wanting to remain independent

ClayRules20122530d ago

Yeah, I’d say bluepount is a realistic one.

bouzebbal2530d ago

Bluepoint, Sanzaru and Insomniac.
Sanzaru did an amazing job with Sly Thieves in Time... They have talent and I really want a new Sly or even Jak. I see them capable of bringing something good.

ps360s2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

Ummm Ted Price...the man with a Price... lol sorry pun tended

Well, it is great to acquire Remedy as I love their games from Alan wake to Quantum Break.

and I have always wanted it to be on a PlayStation console, Alan Wake was the only game that made me upgrade my PC to play it lol, think I had gave away my 360 when it was released

Majin-vegeta2530d ago

Ted being against being bought out was back in early 2010's.Maybe things have changed now that theyve had major success with R&C & Spidey. They tried Multuplat with EA..didnt go so well and then they tried with MS and same thing.

Sevir2530d ago

I'd love Bluepoint, Supermassive and HouseMarque...

There are rumors suggesting that Sony has either acquired HouseMarque or partnered up with them now that they've announced a new AAA IP. Shu paid HouseMarque and Remedy a visit recently.

And Shu being in charge of World wide studios, don't make visits to studios the company isn't working directly with.

I'd say if HouseMarque isn't acquired by Sony, even though they've had amazing success on their platform, then they've signed an exclusive deal with Sony on a AAA new IP, likely for PS5.

And I think Remedy is hard at work on a new PS5 exclusive game.

Nosferatu_dude2530d ago

Ammm perhaps, but do you remember the not so long ago news about ninja theory, just months before they were all proud about doing AAA projects all independent and then boom, few months later they belong to Microsoft, with enough money everything is possible my friend:)

bouzebbal2529d ago

Ready at Dawn Sony please!!!

Remedy is tricky. they don't make games that often.
They shut down Evolution Studios they should have stuck with them.

UltraNova2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

Remedy will not be entering any buyout discussions anytime soon, especially if control is a success. As for Evo Studios I have to agree, they should have kept them. Something else went down with that studio and Sony, that whole mess was weird.

As for other Studios I'd say they need a high caliber Japanese one or create one from the ground up, we need a AAA JRPG from Sony!

Sevir2530d ago

Sony's own Japan Studio is amazing and crafts some very memorable games. They've got multiple teams which work some great titles, but I agree they do need to acquire some new Japanese devs.

GenDesigns, CyberConnect2, Level-5 and From Software would be perfect.

CyberConnect is pretty good but they could use the financial security of First Party, Level 5 have been partners to Sony for ages, and they've crafted some amazing JRPGs would love a WKC3. And GenDesign came together to create The Last Guardian.

From Software has Elden Ring and that contract with Bandai Namco isn't fulfilled yet. I'm sure Sony is looking hard at developers.

My feeling is that they'll use the full deep dive reveal of the PS5 presentation to announce who they've acquired.

UltraNova2530d ago

@sevir

Man, imagine during the full ps5 reveal Sony slams it with a From Soft aqcuisition
and a Demon Souls 2 or BloodBorne 2 launch title announcement!!! Boom!

Master of Unlocking2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

I know right. Whoever at SIEE made that decision severely lacked insight. Now that Microsoft have started to ramp up their game with development studios, I'm sure at least some people must be regretting their decision. Maybe it's not outside of the realm of possibility to reopen that studio and hire both new talents and some of the previous team, so we can finally have a Motorstorm 5 on the PS5...

I still think Sony should build their studios from the ground up instead of buying already established studios.

mkis0072530d ago

Sony builds exclusive relationships before buying studios; Bluepoint and Insomniac fit that bill. Ted will never be sold though. Tell me what exclusive games has ninja theory or Double Fine made for MS before this deal and can you say MS guided these studios to success before aqcuiring them? (Double Fine has even skipped Xbox releases in favor of ps4 released this gen and last).Because you can say that about Sony for Naughty Dog, Guerilla, Sucker Punch, and Media Molecule.

Your attempt at what you were trying to say falls flat.

Inzo2530d ago

If Im not mistaken they are opening a new studio.

Silly gameAr2530d ago

I think you have Sony confused with someone else.

oasdada2530d ago

yeah just like MS... oh wait

Sevir2530d ago

Let's be clear... 7 of the 13 studios they have were built and establishment from the ground up.
Pixelopus is the most recent one, and their yet to be announce 14th studio which is said to be San Diego CA based is also built from the ground up.

They can do both...
They've grown their power house studios to two project teams, they've built new studios, and they've added new studios to the WWS umbrella.

They can do all that. Acquiring new studios is the quickest way to grow your software output. Next to signing exclusive deals.

Dragonscale2530d ago

So its ok to praise ms for buying already established studios but Sony should build theirs from scratch. Lol.

All 3 and some Japanese studios

Yall keep saying some studios want to stay independent but don't realize the cost of making AAA is only going up and all it takes is one game that sells below expectations for studio to be in trouble

Absolutely

Insomniac
Blue point
Kojima
Platinum games

Every one has a price and Sony has the money to make some big time moves

Remember few months ago we heard they were in talk to buy take two, imagine if they do that or something similar like Capcom, sega or square Enix (not saying they will just throwing out an what if)

What if they but CD project red

It's all about money and if someone is willing to pony up the cash I am sure any company would be willing to listen

porkChop2530d ago

"What if they but CD project red"

What fairytale are you living in? CD Projekt is doing extremely well, and own a hugely popular storefront. They don't need to be bought, nor would they ever sell themselves to a console manufacturer.

neutralgamer19922530d ago

I said what if they were to buy a big publisher and threw out some names not saying Sony will or won't buy them

In business there always is a price

RangerWalk2672530d ago

They don't have the capital (cash) for that.

Knightofelemia2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

Quantic Dream, Insomniac, Supermassive Games would also be another good purchase Until Dawn is a good game. I would be curious to see what Bungie could do for Sony if they snagged them up.

ClayRules20122530d ago

Well, that hope of Sony acquiring Quantic Dream isn’t realistic anymore. NetEase aquired a minority stake in Quantic Dream. Their future games will be going multi platform.

Sonyslave32530d ago

I can only see supermassive being brought out, the rest is only wishful thinking.

SyntheticForm2530d ago

Supermassive would be fantastic and I also think Housemarque is a realistic and choice studio that Sony could swoop up, fund, and help make into a little powerhouse.

Petebloodyonion2530d ago

I think they should look toward small independent studios.
Sony has it covered when it's related to AAA games and not everyone will fork 60$ for a new game.
Having some smaller teams that could develop exclusives games like Limbo, Inside, Firewatch could help secure some sells for the ppl with budget price point and would beef up an exclusive line up for PlayStation Now.

Hardiman2530d ago

I like that line of thinking because there are some incredibly talented small studios that would benefit from Sony's stroke and the creative freedom that comes from being part of their umbrella. I would like them to get Bluepoint though. They are really talented and it would be s great fit!

telekineticmantis2530d ago

Sony can do both + Kojima Productions, From Software, Atlus, or CD Project.

Sevir2530d ago

Atlus is owned by Sega, From Software is a low but possible acquisition. CDPR seems to enjoy their independence. And are pretty well funded by the Polish government. They likely won't be getting acquired.

jznrpg2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

Japanese companies for me. From Bandai ,Square ,From software or Capcom to Level 5 , Falcom , Idea Factory etc

FalconofLucis982530d ago

This dont know why so many dislikes

Sevir2530d ago

They can't buy Capcom, Namco or Capcom.... Lol those are major publishing Giants and conglomerates... Those companies buy the same studios that Sony, MS and Nintendo look to add to first party.

From, level-5, Falcom and Idea are smaller, but I believe Falcon is owned by Sega

Djinn2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

Insomniac. Insomniac. Insomniac. They should be the option on any “who should Sony buy?” list.

Imalwaysright2530d ago

Sony already tried to acquire Insomniac but they want to remain independent.

MasterCornholio2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

After their recent successes with Sony that could change. Maybe all they are looking for is creative freedom and good funding. Sony is capable of providing both for them.

Imalwaysright2530d ago

What they are looking for is ownership of the IPs they create. They want to be independent and with the status they achieved in this industry I'm sure that most publishers would be happy to collaborate with them.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio37d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing37d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9237d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit37d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing37d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9237d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
