bit off topic, but can you really use any webcam for say, LBP? I know the game explicitly says to use the pseye, but you guys above have got me wondering...

You are right HD..you can use a 360 Cam on PS3...I used my 360 Cam on Facebreaker(demo) for PS3....you can use any webcab..USB

@ Horny Melon your article sucks..by the way..you really do not need the webcam to fully enjoy LBP.....I fully enjoyed the LBP beta..just the way it was..hell I did not need the full game.

R2 you do need a mic to enjoy Co-op and MP..but you can Buy ANY Bluetooth headset to work on your PS3....

As noted on Horny's actual site, I’ve got two PS3s and two Playstation Eyes, and I can tell you they’re good pieces of kit - using the playstation eye for video chat (it handles both the audio and video well) is a breeze, and things like Eyecreate are a good bit of (free) fun. It also works very well with the downloadable motion-controlled games such as Operation: Creature Feature and Tower of Topoq. I’m not sure where the author draws their experience, but they don’t even discuss the built-in (and highly capable) microphones, or very good light sensitivity (for a consumer webcam) - indeed, the only thing they do is whinge about it’s compatibility with LBP when it sounds like they should be waiting until the confirmed tool to import images from the hard drive (for LBP) is released. And, as noted above, plugging a USB cord into the _back_ of a PS3 is quite an achievement! On the other hand, the USB points at the front are not affected by the PS3’s fan (and not too many people have fans blowing straight onto their home entertainment setups, unless they’re trying to keep an X360 alive).

All in all, an averagely written (which is actually fairly good for the internet) but poorly argued and terribly researched article.

I must say this is my only complaint about the headset is the short cable. But it isn't a huge issue as you can use the cable for the controller as well.

Other than that this headset is incredibly good! Best $10 I have ever spent. My local Toys R Us had the Socom headset bundle on sale for $34.97 (which was a huge error, it should have been just the game itself) so I bought it for the headset, sold the unopend game for $25 and voila, Sony headset for $10 (+taxes).

Personally I don't like the Apple comparison. I know alot of people who hate Apple because of the attitude they have about being better then everything else and what not.

As far as the PSeye is concerned they did the best they could to provide a decent camera in a range that isn't extreamly over the top in terms of pricing. A top of the line camera that would have a perfect picture would cost quite a bit of money and almost no one would be willing to pay for it.

PSeye = $24.00 mic and camera. Camera and microphone. Talk and take pictures for $66.00 less than this guy is advertising. Its one thing to blog wrong info. It is another thing to not know how to shop.

I didn't read but the first paragraph, so I'll only comment on that. What does it matter about the mic when you can use any blutooth? I use the Motorola I got with my Razr. And you don't have to have the eye to play LBP--I had plenty of fun playing it w/o the eye. ~shrug~ Everyone's gotta have something to complain about, I guess.

These idiots who set up Websites and complain about Sony sure are getting tiring. Just more nitpicking over a nonissue. He can't afford a cheap USB extension cable or new longer cable?

They want to talk about the extra cost of getting a mic and eye cam as if its a bad thing. But what about all the extra stuff the 360 needs like a HDD, extra for live, all the fans you need so it wont overheat, the waiting time it takes to get your system back when you get the RROD.

It's mind boggling how much stuff the PS3 is capable of doing. There are big things Sony got right, and tons of little things. But like all things in this world, it falls short of being perfect. A few things I think would definitely be useful for the PS3 are as followed... most are just nit picking, but all are very much welcomed.

1. An official "Hardcore" PS3 bundle would be nice for potential buyers. This would include the official headset and a game like R2 or KZ2.

2. 1080p support standard. I keep picking up PS3 games that cannot output in 1080p. The PS3 doesn't have an upscaling chip like the 360, so this would have to be promised by developers.

3. Rating sort system for Music content. I remember spending awhile creating a playlist with my favorite songs, only to see it disappear later after I updated the firmware. If a rating value was added to each mp3, I could easily sort the XMB to show 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and unrated song folders.

4. A skip button for scrolling XMB items. Pressing R2 or L2 would jump through the list quicker. A simple addition that would make me happy lol.

5. Redone XMB graphic. Yes it is nice looking, but the wave graphic needs to be scraped. Even when you have a wallpaper, it still loads the wave graphic before your background image.

6. XMB support during video playback. This is very much needed. I watched a lot of DVDs on my 360, and it was always cool to message a friend during my movie. Multitasking ya know.

7. PS button does more than opening the XMB, after receiving a message, if you press the PS button, it automatically jumps to the message... which leaves me to my next point.

8. Cross game chat or phone calls. Whether you're in the XMB, watching a DVD, playing SP, or MP. You see the message subject pop up during your game, it says "Dead Space = Fun?". You then press the PS button and read the rest of the message asking why your homie should pick up Dead Space. You back out of the message and select the "Call Friend" option. (insert ringing sound) ... he sees "Incoming call from SilentShank", he presses the PS button, the screen turns black with the text "Accept Call" with two options, Yes and No. After agreeing, we are now talking seamlessly.

9. Last but not least... more avatar options! Why has this been overlooked? It simply boggles the mind why we have a bunch of really lame avatars. Custom avatars would be best. You simply upload a picture and Sony approves them. 24 hours later you have a brand new custom avatar. Most likely a giant ant baby... probably nourishing himself with trains.

But hey, I'm just nitpicking here, the PS3 already does a lot of things exponentially better than the competition, so it's safe to say, as long as Sony keeps up the support by releasing updates that add any kind of improvement, the PS3 will still be my console of choice.

PS3 Its not that bad, just the software environment its awful, I mean here its an update to the screw up upgrade from last week and the extras they just simply not worth a dime (eye toy and the rest of the Bs given for purchase ie. controller).

It would press the price of the console up if they included those. Since you can use any Usb camera and any Bluetooth headset many wouldn't need it either.

If you do want/need an official Bluetooth headset or an PS Eye you can get them separately or in a bundle with a game. Again Sony's intention is giving the consumer options, not telling them what to buy...

I have the PSEye and use it alot for video chat and it's fine. I also use it for in game chat on games like LBP, where chat is for fun, and not team communication/coordination. I have not yet attempted to capture an image for LBP, so I can't comment on that from personal experience. However, after playing user levels for hours and hours, I can say that I've never seen a user created sticker and thought 'Look at that low res, highly pixelated, poor color accuracy sticker. What a loser!' I also wasn't expecting the same quality I get from my 8 megapixel Nikon camera.

anyway, if you can use another headset or another webcam, then you don't need to buy the one from sony. It's normal some products being crappier than others, you just don't buy it...

on a side note: i really hope for a headset after wiispeak get lauched too... Mario kart would be awesome when you can speak with your team in a battle game...

This is a dumb article...you don't need either accessory to play the games....it may heighten the experience a bit...but it not a mandatory thing....

well i dont have the pseye, but i have a motorola bluetooth for $20...and if i am not mistaken, the 360 vision is 79.99 alone (maybe with from Live cards) and the wireless headset is $59.99, please correct me if i am wrong, im not a fanboy, but just dont be bias

Your article is not perfect but it does have it's pros and cons. Anyway, Sony's products are usually high priced because most of the time they are good. About PsEye, it might be the best in the business.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
