We also saw that with the bad PS3 Launch followed by the bad XBOX One Launch that any thing can happen & the tide can change at any given time. Next Gen both Companies seemingly have their act together (outside of Sony's censoring) & add in Nintendo & the other stuff

Where does Nintendo factor into this 9th gen conversation? They’ll have a huge 3.5 year head start by the time these new consoles release

Sony already Push all Microsoft Gaming brand to out of console business. Xbox just a mid range PC working with Windows 10 in it! Every Xbox game coming PC too. Xbox does not have any console special thing anymore. Exclusive means for me and real mean `Only on One Platform` special for One platform. So every Xbox game coming to Windows 10 right? So i`m not calling CONSOLE word for Xbox One or X or new Xbox machine because console should have some special treatment for their fans or customers. I cannot call Xbox Console because hook up to TV and playing games on TV! Because right now I`m using my PC with 32 inch TV too and playing games really well.

Sony and Nintendo always stay on their track on console business. Sony have music and movie sector apps too and for me Nintendo more console than any of them PlayStation or Xbox. On that point Sony always couple steps closer to win nextgen wars. Always this is not change yesterday not gone change tomorrow because Sony making really lot money on Gaming market! They always getting lose on TV or Mobile or other branch but gaming is totally different story for Sony. That`s why they will improve but they not gone lose Console DNA`s from their Eco system.

sony has been the dominant game company since they entered the market - i don't see that ending.

We literally had this same song and dance with Microsoft last E3. That was supposed to be a comeback too.

Sony will definitely continue to best Microsoft in console sales as long as they stay their current course. Hopefully Microsoft will take a page out of Sony's book and release more new, original IPs.

Ha! The Console Wars crack me up. Of course Sony is going to stay in the lead. Maybe not completely dominate Xbox but they will always school them. Sony leads, Microsoft follows. They copy ideas from one another and that’s okay. We need competition so innovation can keep happening. I love all console gaming and own every one from this generation but if I had to choose it would always be PlayStation. They know the way to my digital heart.

I've been gaming for a long time and one thing I've learned is, "Never say Never" When I started gaming, Colecovision , Intelivision, and Atrai were the big players. Then this little unknown company came along called.....Nintendo.....well the rest is history. Point is no console maker has Dominated every gen console cycle.... Microsoft has been mediocre outside their OS Windows business.. look at their windows phone and other trash they are putting out. Even their own internet browser stinks.

I think Sony will sell more consoles but Microsoft will make more money because of gamepass and selling first party stuff on PC too.

Console sales will be handed to playstation but that's not too say ms won't earn nice profits from services.
Simlar to this gen tbh. Also I see more xbox owners transferring over too playstation than playstation gamers going to MS.

I think MS have definitely set themselves up to do better than they have with all of their acquisitions. They games will speak for themselves though. Domination is a tall order comsidering they are facing an uphill climb for that title.

If Microsoft continues with the BS of not caring about consoles, then sony will dominate again. You cannot sit there and tell developers you don't care about selling consoles, they will just say, "ok I don't need to put my game on a console that won't sell and doesn't care to sell." They have gotten to be about the money and want to put their hands in as many pockets as possible, screw the gamers, they are making money. It's pitiful.

Last time I checked xbox has never been market leader.

No MS is committed to the GaaS/subscription route without making comepelling software they will stay behind Sony. The only true competitor to Sony is Nintendo.

Nobody knows, but if Sony comes out with great exclusives like we all think they are, MS will do well, but Sony will do better. Of course, it really depends.

I think Sony will dominate again. I think since gamers now have a choice on weather to buy a Xbox to play 1st party titles or a PC and essentially have a 2 in 1 system (PC games and Xbox games). I think Sony will dominate again in terms of console sales providing they don't suffer a massive train wreck by doing something stupid.

If They keep the power advantage plus the variety of developers plus supior streaming and online it will be an easy win. Lose in power and its over before it starts

In order to make a comeback, you needed to be on that place before. Xbox has never dominated a generation so using the word comeback for Xbox is wrong, they have never been there before.

Unless Sony make a huge disastrous mistake, Playstation is going to dominate next gen too. Current Playstation user base will buy a PS5. There is no incentive for them to buy an Xbox.

I will be getting both :) looking forward to what both companies bring to the table. We are gamers, we should be happy that when we get new hardware. Especially the cpu upgrade.

I dont see microsoft catching up really, I just hope they can give Sony a good run, making the competition alot fiercer which will mean better games and services for gamers as a whole, we will have to wait and see

Gosh, I really hope Sony gives everyone the beatdown next gen with a $500 console, and we pay $70/ year for PSN, and $10/month for PS4 BC, and Sony doesn't bother to go to E3 or make exclusives any longer because why, right?

I haven't read every comment on this article yet, but I think I've basically summed up all the posts that were made by posters who were paid to post this drivel. What a ridiculous fanboy echo chamber this is.

Competition is good folks. This is a bad gen, compared to last, when it comes to game originality and quality, and there's a reason for it.

MS can never win as long as Japan rejects them. MS at best can take the US.

If Sony concentrates on games the way it has done to date, there is no reason why it cannot continue to enjoy the same kind of success it had with the PS4. If Microsoft do the same as they did for this gen, no matter how good the console, it is doomed to languish behind the blue behemoth. MS will have to invest a lot into games, including single-player and over a longer period to ensure that it meets Sony release for release. At present, the numbers are embarrassingly one sided - the number of exclusives from Sony just overwhelm those from MS.

In addition, both Sony and MS will have to make sure that they do not have any anti-consumer policies planned. Last time Microsoft shot itself in the foot with such policies as well as the insistence on Kinect being necessary when it really wasn't. These two aspects really damaged the brand even before the consoles were released. Once the consoles were out, ultimately it was the lack of exclusives that throttled sales.

MS can come back but the landscape is very different. Sony is also very different now. I think it may well be that Sony will do the best but both will thrive.

So Microsoft understands the importance of preservation, who doesn't? Sony? The author needs to understand that ps4 isn't backward compatible with ps3 not because Sony don't understand preservation but because the ps3 was an alien good system and would have cost them a lot to make its games compatible with ps4... To me personally, since I dont work for Sony, MS or Nintendo, articles like this is really not interesting at all. I`m just in for the news about the good games, (old and new ones), this no matter PC, or console brands.

Just my opinion here but Xbox lost me as a customer for good. They’d have to really wow me to consider buying an Xbox again. They haven’t impressed me as a gaming company in years. I see no reason to buy one, PS has my money for the rest of this gen and guaranteed for next gen. They’ve proven themselves time and time again and given me what I want, amazing games and new IPs. I’m not spending my money on a company that blew it like MS this gen. That would be dumb of me to blindly buy their system, heck, based off of this gen alone they actually made me not want to even look their direction at all

Sony has a huge advantage in that people arent going to want to give up their digital ecosystem that they invested in. Sony's psn numbers dwarf xblgold. so that alone will dictate adoption of next gen since BC is a thing.

The ps4 is so popular even in its 6th year. Once ps5 drops it will explode. I predict next gen to be the best gen ever even compared to pc. At the moment you can make a case to get the pc version because higher frame rates as main reason but next gen that won't be the case

I think next gen will be one to remember.
Sony always delivers in giving great games. MS has had games this gen that I definitely liked and still play. Nintendo is Nintendo, they will have good exclusives but I know some 3rd party will not come to the switch.

They will have to be on point the entire gen or the competition will go right by. I am expecting a big variety of great games next gen. Gamers will be the real winners in this competition.

Microsoft and Google are barking up the wrong tree by going head to head and banking on streamed gaming. Streamed gaming will never get past being niche, the telecommunications infrastructure simply cannot support it as a widespread platform. They're leaving both Sony and Nintendo free to dominate the console market, which they will by simply sticking to what they do well. Sony and Nintendo don't step on each other's toes, either, so they can both thrive next to each other. If Nintendo continues to offer the same portable/console hybrid experience the Switch offers with their future hardware, while Sony keeps cranking out the exclusives and powerful hardware experience with the PS5, they will both dominate the next gaming gen.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.

Is this like the 10th quarter in a row they're down 33% on hardware how is that even mathematically possible. You would think their mediocrity would Plateau
