Will Sony Dominate the Next-Generation or Can Microsoft Stage a Huge Comeback?

The battle for the next generation is officially underway. Both Sony and Microsoft have offered up the first tantalising details of their next consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett, respectively, and a picture of the next generation is beginning to form.

New hardware means that fundamental adjustments to the ways that gamers play are coming, with the two tech giants vying for that all-important position underneath your television. The renewed 'battle for input one' really is the PS5 vs Xbox Project Scarlett; but which console will usher in revolution rather than mere iteration?

It's possible that MS could make a comeback. Anything is possible! The early rumblings indicate both consoles will be similar in power, which means it will come down to games. Right now Sony has the better track record in that department. MS needs to hit it out of the park every chance they get. Halo needs to return to form and these studios MS has been buying up have to churn out good games. A proper Fable with maybe a Kameo or Crimson Skies sequel thrown in with a new ip from MS Studios could be a winning formula.

Right now it just seems that MS needs too many things to go right in order for them to take the lead. Sony has the easier task of staying the course and focusing on their games in order to stay out front.

Microsoft xbox won't have a big comeback and Sony playstation will dominate again next generation. They've dominated every generation since ps1. Only fanboys and the uninformed would get a xbox next generation . The next generation xbox will sell a lot less next generation also since people will be able to play xbox games on a lot of different gaming platforms. Most gamers with common sense will stay away from the xbox next generation but a few xbox diehards will buy the xbox day one.

"Microsoft xbox won't have a big comeback and Sony playstation will dominate again next generation."

Easily debatable. The Xbox One managed to sell 40 mil with what is maybe the worst launch lead-up in the history of gaming and if you think about it that's actually kinda surprising. Based off the launch this system should've barely performed better than the Wii U. Will Sony lead next-gen? Most likely. Will they dominate? No. Scarlett will almost certainly be better than the Xbone and the Switch is already doing extremely well so I think a repeat of this gen just isn't possible.

Zeegamereh2537d ago

Jesus Christ you’re like a super fanboy goddam calm down looks like u just want to murder Xbox and every ms employee 😂

Both will do good long live consoles gaming!

AngelicIceDiamond2537d ago (Edited 2537d ago )

"Only fanboys and the uninformed would get a xbox next generation." So if they buy a console that you don't like they're automatically fanboys or naive is exactly what you're saying. You and I both that is an extremist Hitler like way of thinking and ignorance through infinite space and time itself. Well I'm glad you're just a gutter fanboy, if you had any sway in the gaming industry you outright murder gaming worst then the gaming crash over 30 years ago. I mean forget competition, but most importantly choices its about what I want and what I want only. *wipes sweat again thank God you're just a goofy silly little fanboy though with a barely functional brain that's on life support. Keep reading your little pretend Sony bible.

Personally. . The xbox brand is more of a risk. Last gen I purchased an xbox around mid gen because the backlog of exclusives was varied and to my taste. This gen there was absolutely no need for the xbox. Microsoft took a step backwards. I'll give them a chance but it'll never be a day one release. What gets me is that some still think those hating or being fanboys have no reason to be this way. They've been crap this gen and full of empty promises from the start. Good luck and I'll admit they seem like they're moving in the right direction but they are a long way off from my gaming needs. To be this good takes ages. .

Poopmist2537d ago

You do realize that people can buy more than one console right?

Patrick2537d ago

Yes, people can buy more than one console, I bought 6 consoles this generation alone, 4 Ps4's and 2 Switch's. I expect Xbox will do about as well next generation as they did this Gen and the first gen they were in it.

sprinterboy2537d ago (Edited 2537d ago )

There is 3 company's who you could test grandma and grandad to trust in the world which console to go buy for your child without telling them which 2 out the 3 to buy and they would all leave the shop with a nintendo and playstation.
That says it all, global brand, variety and trust

The same debate continues...over and over and...you get it.

Kiwi662537d ago

So what would you're opinion be for those who buy all consoles, will you call them a fanboy or uninformed

This generation will make it more difficult for Xbox and it comes down to digital distribution making it harder to migrate from on platform to another. So in all likelihood Sony will maintain leadership in the console market but there are other opportunities for Microsoft to make revenue off of Xbox. I expect good experience on both consoles.

AngelicIceDiamond2537d ago

Yeah Sony has every right to lead next gen. Plus their strategy will be the same. No need to change a straightforward formula in which gamers fully expect from Sony, Itfs not broken don't fix it is what I say, more AAA's and Ips.

Potnoodle9992537d ago

Anything is possible, but clearly Sony is going to dominate. The media loves to create a tense rivalry situation. But Sony did what they do best and have always done this gen and nailed it. Everybody loved them this gen. Even if they more of exactly the same they have already won.

KyRo2537d ago

The Xbox One and the Xbox 360 probably would have sold similar numbers had the 360 sales not had been inflated with the RRoD issue. 3 people I know In one small work place had bought 11 xbox 360s between them...

Patrick2537d ago

That is it exactly, the original Xbox and this one sold about the same, only the 360 did more and just happened to be the one that had a huge amount of defectives.

Larrysweet2537d ago

U dont need xbox for xbox games itll never compete again

of course Sony will dominate. E3 showed that clearly. Sony has the everything and most important that they have all the world behind them.

Gardenia2537d ago

Outside of the US and maybe the UK, Xbox isn't a popular console. The only way Playstation can fail is by Sony screwing up themselves. And I don't see that happen.

AngelicIceDiamond2537d ago

"The only way Playstation can fail is by Sony screwing up themselves. And I don't see that happen." Which is what happend to Xbox this gen. Having slightly better hardware and priced better was icing on the cake, adding insult to injury of MS own screw up. In fact the pricing of the two consoles is what really did MS in.

Good priced console with compelling launch games is really all MS needs to be competitive at least at the start.

r2oB2537d ago (Edited 2537d ago )

@angelicicediamond

Why people keep blaming this lackluster gen for Microsoft solely on it's launch is beyond me. This whole gen Microsoft lacked compelling, high quality games. That is the issue, they invest in everything but quality games. Even these studio acquisitions are not about quality games, it's about pumping out as many mediocre titles to fluff Gamepass titles. Aiming for a title every 3 months to satisfy Gamepass rather than a "the game is ready when it's ready approach" is an obvious sign of quantity over quality. This is fine if it satisfies Xbox gamers appetite, but don't expect any miracles with that approach.

And only a fool will fall for compelling launch games from Microsoft. If these past two gens taught me anything about Microsoft is that they lure you in with launch titles, then the games from them fizzle out. Happened with the 360 when it had a drought of exclusives it's last 4 or so years, and it is currently happening with the Xbox One with it's drought for the last 3 or so years. What games do Xbox One gamers have to look forward to? Halo and Gears again? Ori looks good, but Bleeding Edge looks mediocre. Neither are AAA quality.

Xbox gamers need to focus less on possibility and more on probability.

DarXyde2537d ago

AngelicIceDiamond,

"Good priced console with compelling launch games is really all MS needs to be competitive at least at the start."

PS3 had neither of those things and still went on to almost break 100M in sales.

Scarlett launches with Halo Infinite and will probably be competitively priced. If that doesn't accomplish what you suggest, then you really have no recourse.

xRacer74x2537d ago (Edited 2537d ago )

Dominant maybe, but Xbox will do better at launch compared to the X1 release. To me it does not matter XBox will be my primary console and PS5 will be a secondary console for their exclusives only. More friends play on XBOX, better controller and i prefer the XBox OS integrated online services compared to the way sony makes online seem seperate.

Eonjay2537d ago

The Xbox One actually had a decent launch and even more so when compared to the 360. The issue comes down to attracting consumers that aren't apart of your core block.

AngelicIceDiamond2537d ago

A decent launch? 360 had RROD the X1 just barely cracked a million on launched but slow down immensely up until Titanfall released. The X1 actually worked at when it released.

Potnoodle9992537d ago

I disagree whole heartedly with everything you said.

2537d ago
Ricegum2537d ago

"XBox OS integrated online services compared to the way sony makes online seem seperate."

What does that even mean? I've heard some odd excuses why Xbox is better but this is a new one.

Considering the crap they did at E3 2013 with the launch of Xbox One, it will be a very easy task to surpass themselves, besides they have two huge advantages they did not had before, that's game pass and The Studios they got this gen that are not releasing games for Sony or Nintendo next gen.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio33d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing32d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9233d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit33d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing32d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
