Editorial: How Can Microsoft Top Last Year’s E3 Performance

Jacob St-Amour from Link-Cable Writes: "E3 is just a week away and there is so much to get excited for. From games, consoles, new and returning franchises, the game trading show has it all and no company had a bigger showing last year than Microsoft. They truly delivered on one of the best press conferences that were filled to the brim with many new titles for every gamer, which puts quite a lot of pressure on trying to topple this monumental feat this year, but there is much to like on how they have positioned themselves this time around. With the hopes of classic titles making their way back in the favour of gamers, potentially showing off new acquisitions as well as the company’s upcoming new device in “Project Scarlett”, Microsoft has all of the tools to outdo their last year’s E3 performance."

14 Xbox Game Studio titles and all the big 3rd party titles will be shown at Microsoft's conference. With the announcement of Xbox Game Pass for PC we have publishers lining up to jump on board seeing how it was such a huge success on Xbox.

Project X Cloud powered by Microsoft's world class Azure Cloud has 3,500 titles ready and lets not forget the star of the show Xbox Anaconda.

Phil Spencer is the best ever

I'm predicting that we'll see a few unexpected partnerships...things that will make the Ninja Theory acquisition seem tame in comparison.

Are you sure you aren't Aaron Greenburg? All you seem to do is recite MS press releases.

Z5012573d ago

But last E3, MS had 18 'exclusives' and announced the acquisition of 5 studios.

Everyone wants MS to bring back the classics in full AAA for Banjo, Conqueror, Blinx etc. I don't think these games will be big sellers nor big AAA maybe AA. With that said MS needs to focus on new games and franchises. Those games are relics of the past. Perfect Dark and Mech Assault I can see those games being AAA development if they rebooted PD and completely revamp MA. Other than that MS needs much, much needed new blood.

I would agree if wasn´t for the success of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

conanlifts2573d ago

MS have so many classics, they need rebooting and re-releasing and shouldn't be left in the past. Equally though I also agree they need to be releasing at least 1 new IP per year. I said this a while back but i think MS need a developmental studio. The studio could work on new IP mini games. Each game could last anywhere from 90 minutes - 3 hours. That way they can test the waters with new concepts and take huge risks. If it succeeds they then pass it over to a larger arm of this XDEV studio who makes it into the next AAA ip.

rainslacker2573d ago

Maybe. Not that I'm against revisiting old classics, but when you look at MS classics, they aren't as well known outside those who have played Xbox games. I'm having a hard time thinking of any MS IP that really reached mainstream appeal outside those games that they already have regular releases on. About the only one they haven't brought that had more mainstream appeal would be Fable, and they are supposedly working on a Fable game.

They'd be good games to have, but I don't think they're really going to catch people's attention like Crash Bandicoot would.

gamer78042573d ago

I agree with perfect dark but i think banjo and some of those others would be hard to resurrect in current times

I think the schedule of release will be roughly like this:
The Initiative- New game in 2-3 yrs with a possible reveal in 2 yrs(2020 or 2021)
Compulsion game- New game in 2-3yrs (2020 or 2021)
Inxile- Already have Wasteland 3 schedule for 2019 and have wasteland 1 remake(2020 and an unannounced new game in works.(2021 or 2022)
Obsidian entertainment- The Outer Worlds will be out in 2019 and their new game should be for another 2 yrs in 2021
Undead Labs- State of decay 3 is already in the making and should take 2-3 yrs.(2020 or 2021)
Ninja theory- Already planned to reveal next year possible scheduled for 2020 or even 2019 considering they would have been in development for 3yrs since Hellblade.
Playground games- Already hard at work on open world game since they have 2 teams of 200 people. Possibly reveal in 2019 and release for 2020

343i: Halo infinite is definitely releasing in 2020 possible alongside the new Xbox similar to how the original Xbox was released with Halo.
The Coalition: Already have Gears 5 and tactics scheduled for 2019 and their next project should be for 2022 going by their 3 yr dev cycle.
Turn 10: Forza Motorsport 8 2019
Rare: Having released SOT in 2018 they will continue to support it for the Year or two and then announce their new game scheduled for 2020 or 2021

2019- Crackdown 3, Ori and the will of the wisp, Gears 5, Gears Tactics, Battletoads, Wasteland 3(not exclusive) and The Outer worlds(not exclusive)
2020- Most likely year for the new Xbox and alongside it: Halo infinite, Ninja theory's game and Wasteland 1 remake and Forza Horizon 5
2021- Obsidian's new game, Forza Motorsport 9, Compulsion's new game, Playground's new game and The Initiative's new game.
2022- Rare's new game, Undead labs, Gears 6, Inxile's new game, Ori devs and Forza Horizon 6.

derektweed12573d ago

Forza Motorsport 8 will not release in 2019, Turn10 have already said that months ago. They will overhaul Forza Motorsport 7 instead.

MikeNike3102573d ago

Show the new Xbox and let it be great.

MrSec842573d ago

It should be pretty easy, just focus on announcing new games that they should have had in development for quite a while.

Microsoft's E3 2018 didn't really have much, Halo and Gears were nice, but those are franchises we've seen numerous times.

Sure they confirmed that Next-XBox was coming, plus some new studios had joined their development family, but they didn't reveal any new games from those studios.

MS needs to rain in the nonsense Phil Spencer chat and show at least a few new titles, with full gameplay reveals from either new IPs or classic franchises that haven't had solid series entries for ages.

Even if we just got Fable or a new IP from Playground Games and the game Ninja Theory are working on that would be better than last year.
Halo and Gears have been at pretty much every Microsoft E3 this gen, while they need to have great showings from those games, they need to take a back seat to whatever the other Microsoft studios are working on.

New IPs and games that haven't been given new entries from less used franchises is what needs to be at Microsoft's E3 this year.

If they don't have new games to announce from any new studios, then don't bother talking about those new studios at E3, it would be boring, just like their E3 2018 was.

Show great looking games, reduce the chat, unless they're ready to show next-gen as a proper reveal there's no point having that bull XBox One X style announcement we got in 2016.
Make the show about the games, maybe XCloud details, but keep the chatter to a minimum, gamers don't need to hear Phil or other people waffling on like they have a tendency to at these things.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio53d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing53d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9253d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit53d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing53d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9253d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
