PlayStation 5's Beefier Hardware Could Help Mitigate Indies' Optimization Troubles, Says Ubisoft Dev

The powerful hardware of the PlayStation 5 could indirectly help mitigate the troubles indie developers often have with optimization, according to a developer from the Ubisoft Toronto team.

I guess if those indie developers want to focus on lower tech relevant games, sure. I mean, how much it requires optimization is really about that and if they want to do 1080p30fps then that's just easier without less memory management. But they should be facing the same issues if they're aiming for higher specs as they do this generation.

Imp0ssibl32574d ago

Yep, that is most likely what he is referring to

KaiPow2574d ago

Hopefully that means devs can just "push a port button" on the PS5 without too much hassle other than coding in trophy hooks.

Christopher2574d ago

And my point is that it really goes without saying. It's the exact same situation we have this generation.

I hate this line of thinking from indie devs, and it's even relevant to big games as well. Minimizing optimization issues just means brute forcing through unoptimized code. That causes the system to run more than it has to, and optimization is where you can best find ways to make the game run better at it's core. It's not just about having power to run poorly designed code....which is usually what unoptimized code is....sloppy, it's about making the code so it's elegant, and performs it's best. Any self respecting programmer would want that.

For artists, you design for the system, and that means learning your craft to allow things to appear better using less. Yes, you can take advantage of the extra hardware, but you don't learn as fast, or hone your skills on how to make efficient objects.

I've seen so many indie games which would run on a NES or SNES just fine, yet they'll tax the system because they're so poorly designed on the back end. While I wouldn't call them lazy, I would say that they don't care enough about their craft to do things right. Simple games are simple, and if you're struggling to make a game like that on today's hardware, much less next gen hardware, then it'd be good to get back to basics, learn a few things, then design your game, because you will be much better prepared for the future.

You know what grinds my gears, armchair developers.

rainslacker2574d ago

I suppose that can be annoying. But I do work in the industry, and have worked on quite a few games that have been published, and now, I make the tools that many devs use to make their games.

Not that I have to post my resume to make my point though.

So, I'll tell you what grinds my gears.

People who try to dismiss arguments by trying to discredit the person saying them, without bothering to add to what the argument was that they are trying to dismiss.

If you have a problem with something I said, talk about that. I don't care what bothers you, as the topic at hand isn't what bothers you, but about game design best practices.

If you think I"m wrong, tell me why. I assume you are also a developer if you need that as a pre-qualification to properly discuss this topic.

esherwood2574d ago

Honestly if we can’t see that code who cares. Just because they’re not putting a ton of time into optimization doesn’t mean they’re not spending that time in some other aspect of the game.

rainslacker2574d ago (Edited 2574d ago )

Think of it this way. You're playing a game, Nothing much is going on. Graphics aren't stressing the system, but the fan is going full speed on the console because the code isn't optimized, and it's just wasting power. I know it's probably not really going to affect the end user so long as enough power is there to run the code in the time needed, but as a programmer, I tend to be a bit picky about coding habits, and I've had enough time in my own career where I've gone through and fixed other people's sloppy code, that I take issue with the sentiments expressed here.

If a dev wants to do this, then I can't stop them, and I'm not suggesting people avoid their games. I just find it amateurish to develop a game, or write any software, and rely on raw power to make it run well enough. You don't grow as a developer, artist, or engineer that way. Optimization doesn't have to be a dirty word. It should be done for the betterment of the product, because I think taking pride in one's work is important.

Most of them are using unity or similar engines, those that make their own engines seem to do better. These game engines make it easier to make a cross platform game, but they don’t seem to run as well as we would like. Even games that seem simple can struggle on consoles when they use unity or unreal engine 4. Next gen I don’t think this will be a problem.

Sgt_Slaughter2574d ago (Edited 2574d ago )

Ubisoft and other AAA developers might want to focus on themselves and fixing their own optimization problems.

Teflon022574d ago

meh, Honestly I shake my head at the bad performance of some indie games. I don't want indies to simply have a easier time developing. I want them to take the time to learn to optimize instead of brute forcing games. Becauser half the games could run on a snes or ps2 if a decent dev had it. I know indies don't have the money, but sdometimes the issues are unacceptable and this is going to make em be more lazy as 75% of them are indie games or trying to sell off nostalgia purposes

meep3162574d ago (Edited 2574d ago )

I want them to either stop using unity, for unity to get better, or for them to make their own engines. I also think people should stop being armchair developers unless they put their money where their mouth is or at the very least learn enough to have an informed opinion.

News at 7.... more powerful hardware makes games run better!

Double_O_Revan2574d ago

This just in.... Still won't do a damn thing to make Bethesda games run any better.

30fps sucks. Especially on an OLED.
