When he says 'Xbox Game Studios' he could also mean from a publishing perspective since the division was rebranded from Microsoft Game Studios. Alan Wake was published by Microsoft Game Studios and they're not owned by Microsoft so saying 'Xbox Game Studios games' does not necessarily mean it's 1st party. Death Stranding is a 'Sony Interactive Entertainment' game but it is also 2nd party so it depends on what he means when he says it and it's why I ask for clarification.

It's also why I ask if The Outer Worlds counts because they're not actually publishing the title. If they are talking purely 1st party studios then obviously it does but from a publishing perspective it doesn't. I'm just curious is all.

Lots of game is always great. None of them will be tied to Xbox consoles so that is a total plus.

MS considers 2st party games related to "MS global publishing" as games made by xbox studios. It's something like this:
2st party makes the game > MS Global Publishing gives support > game becomes part of " games made by xbox studios".
Imho, at least 2 games in E3 are going to be 2st party under MS global publishing flag.

Except we actually don't know what they mean when they say 'Xbox Studios Games' because the divisions rebrand makes it a confusing term in this instance.

And they're also listed as a publisher for games that are 2nd party which if MS goes in a similar route mean 2nd party could be included in that tweet. That's partly why I question the title.

My main intent for questioning it is that if he does mean 1st party studios then it means that every studio is showing atleast 1 game or some studios are working on 3 projects which makes me think some of those are not worth paying attention to (Could be something like Halo Spartan Assault). Keeping expectations in check as always in case it's the latter :/

I'm just saying what they've used in the past, and what I said above is based on the new rebranding. They didn't change what those things refer to, just what they're named. I also said I suspect their common practice would still be, because I don't think MS is trying to obfuscate the issue. It's not really that complex. The usage in the tweet may not represent how it's typically used, as tweets sometimes do detour from that. Whether it does here or not, I'm not making a judgement call on.

Forza Horizon was a 1st party game, outsourced to a third party developer. What is commonly referred to as a 2nd party game...although 2nd party can also be something different, like Sunset Overdrive or what not. It's not unlike Spider-Man was a Sony production, but made by Insomniac. To my knowledge, Sony will say SIE for something like that, while I'm not really sure what MS would use. I also don't know if MS ever directly referred to Forza Horizon with either moniker like this. They'd display MGS on the logos at the start of trailers. Sony generally doesn't refer to SWS unless they are speaking directly about them, or it's done by the media itself.

I don't take issue with them calling it part of their internal studios(before the acquisition) if it's a case where its their game, sourced to a third party.

All of what I said may be irrelevant as who knows what means what anymore with social media, where things may change at the drop of a hat.

I'm not sure they will in the case of Compulsion. The studio is made up of only 40 devs and We Happy Few only released less than a year ago. They've also recently released dlc for the game so I doubt they have a new game to show.

If they do then wow they're working hard and I'd imagine that an MS acquisition would've allowed them to get some new hires but we'll have to wait and see.

Not many people seem to know about the other project rare are working on but the studio head said they were working on other projects at the e3 sea of thieves was first revealed and I heard recently that they said they had another team working on something else other than sea of thieves and it's another new ip

I'm tempted to pick up an X1 again since they're pretty cheap but I'm concerend if the focus will be the new console and if all these titles will suffer because of a new console? How many 1st party titles can they release before a 2020 new Xbox?

For sure, different strokes for different folks. I play at my desk on my PC monitor while sitting in my La-Z-Boy office chair, but if I'm feeling like relaxing a bit more, I'll turn on my Xbox One or my PS3, and play on my TV. I have a secondary PC that I was using for a brief time on my TV, and while I use my Xbox 360 controller for some games, there are many other games that I prefer using mouse & keyboard, and it just wasn't comfortable using M&KB on the couch.

If I lived in a smaller space where I wouldn't have room for a desk, then I would have everything set up on a TV for sure. I do like the sensation of switching between my Xbox One in my livingroom, and my PC in my office, as things all start to feel the same if you're playing everything the same way, with the same user interface and display.

The guys at PG kick so much ass. Would absolutely love to see them smash out an RPG for the ages.

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
