Microsoft's mistake made Resident Evil 4 a GameCube exclusive

Resident Evil 4 was very briefly a GameCube exclusive, but had Microsoft been better equipped, it might have been a long-term Xbox exclusive instead.

I believe it was a PS2 exclusive that got scrapped and turned into both Ps2 and Gamecube. The PS2 version was scrapped/delayed for the initial release. News to me...

septemberindecember2564d ago (Edited 2564d ago )

Your partially right. Initially in development for the PS2, but Hideki Kamiya made the game a bit too action oriented. So they made it a new IP (Devil May Cry)

Development then restarted and announced as a GameCube exclusive. Then ported to the PS2 only a year later.

KwietStorm_BLM2564d ago

Nintendo had a deal with Capcom. That's why they also got REmake and Resident Evil 0.

2pacalypsenow2564d ago

I remember borrowing my friends GameCube just to play the Remake.

Interesting!
Why can’t we have more articles like.

It's just a fantastic and in depth Eurogamer article regurgitated twice.

The PS2 version was not very good.

2pacalypsenow2564d ago

Huh? In what aspect? If I remember correctly it was just as good if not better (because of the extra content) than the GameCube one.

2pacalypsenow2564d ago (Edited 2564d ago )

Although the PS2 was inferior power wise to the GameCube, it did not affect the PS2 version enough to call the PS2 version of RE4 "Not very good"

Segata2564d ago

Cutscenes were in the engine but not in the game. They were taken from the Gamecube version. If you wore a costume it reverted to default on the PS2 version. It looked worse and ran worse. I think people forget Gamecube was a fair bit more powerful than PS2. With Dreamcast dead PS2 was the weakest console hardware wise that generation. PS2 had extra content but didn't run as well.

DarkKaine2564d ago

The GameCube was such an amazing system and is the sole reason Nintendo stopped trying to compete with other systems. Too bad it sold so poorly. We may have not have to put up with the underpowered systems that they put out afterwards. At least the Switch has a reason to be underpowered.

Bronxs152564d ago (Edited 2564d ago )

I owned both ps2 and GameCube and elected to get it on game cube. It was two disc. Developed for GameCube and ported to ps2. GameCube was more capable hardware. And the big deanat the time for me. GameCube used a S-video cable a step up from the composite cables (red white and yellow) on ps2.

I’m not sure if the smaller disc of GameCube lead to better loading or not.

Also no doubt it would have been better if it came on Xbox

Cikatriz_ESP2564d ago

@Bronxs15

Both consoles came with composite cables and had S-Video cables available separately.

Atom6662564d ago

It's good, but the GC version is the better of the two.

MadLad2564d ago (Edited 2564d ago )

Performance-wise, it was faaar weaker than the Xbox. The original Xbox was comparable to a mid-range PC at the time, with some concessions.
Pretty sure the GameCube was even more powerful, thought that thing had its own issues, obviously.

PS2 made up for it with games. Xbox had loads of amazing console/1st party exclusives too, just not as many.

Bronxs152564d ago

@cikatriz
I was excited about GameCube s video at the time because the game looked amazing at the time. Some of the best graphics I seen at the time. Also at the time of this excitement when the game was announced and released there was no ps2 version. So by the time it came to ps2 I had moved on and didn’t even think about a s video cable for ps2.

P_Bomb2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

PS2 didn’t just have composite. It had SVideo as well as component cable support which was even better. Component > S-video. I still have my component cables plugged in to enable Progressive Scan on whatever games supported it (such as RE4).

Not true according to the reviews at the time.

MadLad2564d ago

So are you arguing the objective truths everyone else here seem to acknowledge, just because that version still reviewed well?

Razzer2564d ago

I think it is blatantly obvious that I'm saying reviewers at the time did not agree that "the PS2 version was not very good".

Sirk7x2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

Luckily we have about fifteen of hindsight now though. PS2 version had extra content, which was great, but the game was built for the Gamecube. It looked better, ran better and felt better to control. RE4 blew away competition when it first launched. And yes, the PS2 version was also very good, because we're talking about one of the greatest games ever made xD

Razzer2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

At no point did I make an argument about which version was better. People need to read. My post was in response to:

"The PS2 version was not very good."

When did I say a damn thing about GameCube's version? Read what I say. Not what you think I said or want me to have said.

XD

What's your review on the game? I thought it was great you can see it on my comment history check it out

Imalwaysright2564d ago

I played it on the PS2 and to this day it still is one of the best games I ever played in my life.

P_Bomb2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

PS2 version was good too. Supported progressive scan with component cables for a better picture that could run proper on HDTVs with a true widescreen format. 3 hour Ada mission was cool. Came in a nice steel case with a lithograph.

Sirk7x2563d ago (Edited 2563d ago )

It didn't run as well, or look as nice, but the extra content was definitely a plus on PS2. Damn though, RE4 was a revelation when it first launched on Gamecube.

If we gonna start talking about Microsoft's past mistakes...

Bleucrunch2564d ago

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio24d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
