DOOM Eternal shows new gameplay and its performance on Google Stadia

DOOM Eternal is going to be one of the great videogames of the next QuakeCon – which will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise – and the imminent E3, the most important videogame fair in the world, which is just around the corner. However, a few weeks ago, the title from Bethesda and id Software was shown in depth in the past GDC 19, offering us an exclusive look at one of its new levels and its version for Google Stadia .

Go to the 40 minute mark to actually see the game play. Frame rate and image quality look fine, but there is no way to judge input latency in this video.

the beauty of this platform is that we will likely have the ability to try it out and see if it works simply by going to youtube and using a keyboard and mouse.

Jin_Sakai2439d ago

A good way to try demos before buying games locally.

opc2439d ago

@Jin_Sakai

absolutely, but everyone here will complain about latency in their demos

TopherMan2439d ago (Edited 2439d ago )

When did Google say they would provide free demos of all games on Stadia?

opc2439d ago

@TopherMan

I don't believe they ever have said for ALL games... but demos for some games exist on practically every platform, and the Stadia annoucement said that you'll be able to send snippets of games for friends to play. It would be a massive misstep if they locked a trial behind a payment when they've spent all this time removing barriers such as downloads, installations, and hardware.

the network stream latency alone is enough to null out the biggest advantage of a mouse, which is speed/twitch.

Tech Crunch wrote the following on their own demo (not this game)

"Things started off pretty ugly. The frame rate dropped to a fast-paced PowerPoint presentation, the resolution dipped between 4K crispness and indecipherable blurriness and latency seemed to be as much as a half-second. As the Google employees looked nervously at each other, someone grabbed the controller from me and restarted the system."

They did say that their experiences were largely positive to be fair, but it left them feeling that the platform has even more unpredictability due to even more reliance on a strong network connection to bring the features it claims.

Still, I don't see competitive twitch shooters or rhythm games or anything where timing is crucial to excel on this platform. Maybe things like Assassins Creed type games etc. Personally im not really interested in it as a platform. Streaming to me is a nice to have, not a primary goal.

This platform is only going to be sold on FR and image quality, it seems.

indysurfn2438d ago

ummmm if you dont have fiber optics there in trouble according to the 3drealms interview article.

Kumakai2439d ago

agreed. theres also no way to judge true video quality because its a compressed h264 video running at 1080p and w/ no hdr cuz h264.

gangsta_red2439d ago

Looking forward to playing the new Doom. The first one was absolutely fantastic.

indysurfn2438d ago (Edited 2438d ago )

ROFL!!! Not sure if the disagrees got the techie joke.

Outlawzz2439d ago

I'm excited for stadia. I know most are not. I want it to be good and succeed, now if it's too laggy or you need a super strong connection It won't do it for me. I just want to be able to play AAA quality games wen I'm not home. The switch is great but most third partys arent bringing their graphic heavy games to it. We'll see how it goes, I'm holding off my latency judgements until we get the final product

Rude-ro2439d ago

The only thing that would suck is what happens any time big money enters a market.. monopolizing things to say “exclusive”.
As far as what they are doing... no issue.
It will also be interesting if they support cross save an cross play via steam, epic, etc since these services are basically consoles on pc.

aconnellan2439d ago

I don’t quite get your comment. You don’t want it to have exclusives?

TacoTaco2439d ago

If you remember/read Eurogamer's articles on AC Odyssey's performance, it wasn't much higher than the Xbox One X's already-high input latency.

Multiplayer games may not be the most well-suited, but the typical 30fps console-oriented single player games, especially those like Odyssey, Hellblade, Tomb Raider and so on, should be acceptable on the service, especially with them being powered by a 10 TFLOP machine.
