Borderlands 3 doesn’t have Midgets as it’s “not super sensitive”

Borderlands 3 is changing some of the series' more outdated language.

Wow...really?

"Tinks"

Until people just start calling small people tinks as a hurtful term and it will have defeated the point of all this.

Eonjay2593d ago

The should call them 'shorties'

carcarias2593d ago

Heh. I think dwarfs were in Warhammer 40K at one point, they were called 'stunties'.

rdgneoz32593d ago

So midget chucking becomes tink tossing?

carcarias2593d ago

Hehe, and funnily enough that sounds even worse :)

Hungryalpaca2593d ago

The right wing “morality police” from the past who tried to ban everything that wasn’t Jesus is back but it’s not the right wing this time.

I really wish game companies would stop catering to Twitter. Twitter has a bunch of loonies on it.

Concertoine2593d ago

This kinda crap makes me miss ol Jack Thompson. Yeah he was an annoying puritan, but at least he didnt actually influence the industry.

Jman22593d ago

Suprisingly the term "tink" or "tinks" is a derogatory term originating in scotland for gypsy/romanian traverling groups. Farmers would shout the term when they crossed there field etc. a 70 year old man was even given a crinimal record for a "hate" crime by using the term inside his own home.

So in there quest for political correctness they just landed on a term that is perceived as just as bad in the eyes of some SJW's.

10,000 years in hell for anyone who chose Oddjob in Goldeneye back then.

jznrpg2593d ago

Oddjob was always banned during meaningful competitions with friends or that person really sucked .

DaveZero2592d ago

What about Monkey on Timesplitters, midgets are awesome on those kind of games just for annoying people.

Dance, dance dance Just like a monkey.

Smokehouse2593d ago

Where are all of these midgets that are outraged about the word midgets? Are we sure it’s not just fully grown white liberals that are outraged by the plethora of random banned words?

xX-oldboy-Xx2593d ago

And their on the hunt for more, no end in sight - outrage and offense is the new normal.

Smokehouse2593d ago

No it’s not. Normal everyday people don’t give a shit about anything they say lol. Twitter shapes the narrative, that’s the real problem. News = twitter reactions. And twitter is infested with scumbags.

Fist4achin2593d ago

Hell, im offended. About what?! I have no idea, but i will tell you when i figure it out.

These new agendas and means they go about smearing everything is really annoying.

xX-oldboy-Xx2593d ago

I'm one of those people haha - it wasn't a black & white observation. You've extended upon what I said, unfortunately Twitter gives these numpties mileage.

meep3162593d ago

People just say things they think will get them a lot of likes.

Smokehouse2593d ago

Lmao! Excuse me, midget is derogatory, I prefer “little person”. What?! Why not go with dwarf? “Dwarfism” is apparently acceptable and that sounds worse than midget imo. I highly doubt any members joined to “fight the m word”. It’s a support non profit lol.

But I do indeed respect your response. You gave me what I asked for. An example that isn’t another white liberal. Maybe... that article is suspect. Maybe a white liberal dwarf.

RauLeCreuset2593d ago

"'Dwarfism' is apparently acceptable and that sounds worse than midget imo."

That's the thing. It's not about your opinion.

Christopher2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

@Smokehouse: Honestly, intent behind whatever you say is what really matters, but I'm not going to disparage a group that is not 'normal' and has experienced ridicule regularly for something they can't control wanting to present language they feel acceptable for them versus language they feel is used derogatorily. I've been ridiculed, but not for things I couldn't control or change through my own actions, so I don't feel it's right for me to dictate for them whether a word is offensive or not. And it doesn't bother me to not use the word. As long as people still have the right to use the word, I think it's fine. They're just saying they don't want you to use it, not that you can't. Kind of like Gearbox is saying they are choosing not to use it, not that no one else should.

Smokehouse2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

@Rau
Who’s opinion is it about? I just find it hard to believe that someone who is outraged about the word midget would prefer little person or dwarf. How is that any less “derogatory”? Did the midgets meet up one day and declare this? It sounds like a fully grown white liberal crusade, that’s all lol. Simply because they are constantly doing shit like this.

@chris
Gearbox can do whatever they want, I have just never heard the term used in a derogatory way. It was used to describe someone.
Guy 1: Hey game of thrones is great, Tyrion is my favorite character.

Guy 2: who’s that

Guy 1: the midget

Guy 2: oh ok

There is no hate involved there. I have never heard midget used to be hateful in any way. Not once.

Christopher2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

***There is no hate involved there. I have never heard midget used to be hateful in any way. Not once.***

Anecdotal and not necessarily representative of what a person who is short actually experiences.

If we based offensiveness on how much everyone has heard of it offensively, we wouldn't find much offensive even though it would still be as such to those affected.

Smokehouse2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

But how does calling someone a “little person” or a dwarf make a short person feel any better? It sounds like some lord of the rings shit. It makes no sense and that’s why I find it hard to believe.

I don’t find much offensive honestly lol. Unless it’s about my family then I don’t care.

Christopher2593d ago

***But how does calling someone a “little person” or a dwarf make a short person feel any better? It sounds like some lord of the rings shit. It makes no sense and that’s why I find it hard to believe.***

Because of the connotation and history of the word. Same as hard g n-word when spoken by a white person to a black person in the U.S.

It's something you don't know because you don't live with it. But, if you did, you'd likely have a better perspective of the situation.

And, again, this isn't about telling you to not call a person what you want, this is GearBox recognizing it and choosing to do what they feel is right for them.

I don't think you need to understand the why to everything just to be respectful to others as they wish. I mean, isn't that what we all want, to be treated with respect?

Smokehouse2593d ago

I don’t know the history of the word midget, it’s the only term I have ever known. I respect many midgets, it has nothing to do with that. I have never known a midget personally or media to tell me they don’t like the word. I have never heard one midget say they don’t like the word let alone a mass movement in the early 2000s to squash the word.

You can’t compare n****r to midget just to make an argument. I highly doubt the same feelings are evoked. I would respect someone’s wishes if they truly felt hurt by the word but I have yet to see someone who isn’t a white liberal complain about such things. I hate to keep saying that but it’s the truth lol. I don’t care about white liberal knights or their feelings about someone else’s condition. Just like they don’t care about mine, my opinion doesn’t matter either lol.

I don’t respect people based on height or skin color or anything that isn’t action or character based. Warwick Davis is a great actor, I like most of his work. If he came on TV and asked people to stop saying midget then I would stop. The world wouldn’t but I would. I want to know if Warwick Davis prefers “little person”. That’s so dumb but I would respect that.

Christopher2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

***I don’t know the history of the word midget***
***You can’t compare n****r to midget just to make an argument.***

How the heck do you know this? You don't know the history of the word?!?

***I respect many midgets***

Then you would respect their desire to not be called midgets? I mean, seriously, I provided a link to the main organization in the U.S. where they said they want to get rid of it. What do you have for an organization of similar nature that says they want to be called it? Anything? Or just your opinion?

Are you being respectful or are you just telling yourself you're being respectful?

***I want to know if Warwick Davis prefers “little person”.***

https://twitter.com/warwick...

https://www.chortle.co.uk/n...

Smokehouse2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

Because I know the history of the word n***r and it’s not the same.

It’s an opinion piece by someone in the organization. True.

Hey great article with Warwick and I wouldn’t call him a midget. I don’t agree with everything or even the premise of “being used for cheap laughs” but I can respect it. A comedian calling someone a little person is still a midget joke. It’s not the joke that offends them, it’s the word used? It sounds like an answer to a loaded question more than a personal stance. I ask why with everything I don’t mean to offend it’s just habit lol.

Like he says they are all individuals and I get that. Some don’t like being called little people or dwarves. I’m just the type that couldn’t give a shit less about someone’s pronouns. “But the acceptable terms are...” lol.

He’s not the dwarf ambassador but I value his opinion on the matter more than anyone else's I guess. I have always appreciated his work since willow and leprechaun. He played the short guy. Thanks for that.

Lol@twitter. Thats the first time I have seen midget used in a derogatory way and of course it’s on twitter and not actually talking about a dwarf. A mental midget basically, that’s funny. As she rushes to shield her feminism she offends the boss. Twitter is a joke.

Christopher2593d ago

***I don’t agree with everything or even the premise of “being used for cheap laughs” but I can respect it.***
***He’s not the dwarf ambassador but I value his opinion on the matter more than anyone else's I guess.***

If you don't agree with the person in front of you who has experienced what they are telling you, and you say you respect them, then there's really no point in trying to get you to understand the reasons behind why they don't want to be called midgets. Your mind is made up and there's nothing that will change it.

End of conversation.

Smokehouse2593d ago

Okay but you just cherry picked what I said.... just saying the word midget isn’t funny, it’s not used for cheap laughs. The joke would still be funny if they were called little people. He’s telling comedians to stop using the word for cheap laughs. I respect him and I won’t call them midgets anymore but I don’t have to agree with everything he says. You saw what you wanted to see out if that post.

Later!

RauLeCreuset2593d ago

Wow. Talk about circling the drain. I hope you learned a lesson here Christopher. Intent doesn't matter as much as effect. Pretending otherwise is how you get caught up wasting time with people who are going to seize upon that gift to deny offensiveness by denying the intention behind the offense, no matter how much evidence you provide that people were offended. You provided exactly what was asked for both times. Think of how many levels of ridiculous that became. "Warwick Davis is a great actor, I like most of his work. If he came on TV and asked people to stop saying midget then I would stop." Where do you even go with that? What is that even saying? It's basically "I have no idea what I'm talking about and such nonexistent connection to the community whose agency I'm willfully ignoring to push this "white liberal" narrative, that I can only begin to be somewhat swayed if I hear it, again, from a celebrity member of that community." That's what you get when you prioritize the intent of the person offending over the effect on the people offended.

@Smokehouse

That's why I said it's not about you. It's about the community that term refers to. I don't have the patience for the shenanigans that Christopher has displayed. I'm not going to dumb it down and indulge willful obtuseness. I'm not going to be afraid to tell you not to say or do something. I fully recognize that I can't legally compel you not to say or do something, but I'm not going to be afraid to tell you not to do it. There's a wide gulf between saying don't do something and sending the goons to kick in your door for saying it. Some people just lack the maturity to deal with being told they shouldn't do something. Otherwise most of these debates about whether something is offensive or not could be avoided with the simple admonition to not be an a-hole.

You guys are hilarious... just because you haven't heard any of any outrage doesn't mean none exist.. the term 'midget' has been considered insensitive literally since early 2000's.. i dont get you guys mindset when it comes to this sorta sh*t, your circle doesn't reflect the worlds stance on things.. why is that so hard to grasp..?

Smokehouse2593d ago

I never said it didn’t exist, I was just wondering where they were and if its not just another white liberal crusade to redeem their white guilt or whatever reason they do what they do lol.

Considered by who though? Midgets? Your circle of sensitivity doesn’t represent the world stance on things either lol. I have never heard the term midget be used in a derogatory way.

Prince-Ali2593d ago

you really think how you come across isn't EXTREMELY dismissive loool...?

Bro the simple facts are, even if there's one person that's offended ESPECIALLY by a word already considered insensitive, then thats one person tooo many! i dont understand how thins point is lost on you guys ¬_¬... and like @RauLeCreuset said below, you're really taking issue with a developer trying to not be offensive lool... that's hilarious

RauLeCreuset2593d ago

The scrutiny should be on just who is getting upset at a developer choosing to be less offensive. Really? That's your fight? Okay.

Smokehouse2593d ago

I’m not upset at all, I think it’s funny. I’m not talking about gearbox at all. I just wanted to know if midgets are really upset or if it’s the white liberal word police again.

RauLeCreuset2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

Given how you've been trying to grind this "white liberal" ax despite repeatedly being supplied the evidence to the contrary that you asked for, it seems your emotional investment in this goes far beyond simple amusement.

Segata2593d ago

Yup, likely just Resetera with another " Well I never" kind of outrage.

Damn, the Fallout tactic but reversed..

Inverno664d ago

I am glad the movie is bombin, can we stop making horrible adaptations now?

ChronoJoe663d ago

There have been some good adaptations recently though. I think the Gran Turismo movie is really good and The Last of Us and Fallout TV shows are great too.

If they're going to try, some of them are going to fall short. That's just inevitable. If anything we should encourage more effort so that they learn more about what makes some of these work, while others don't. Honestly I think Borderlands should have been a hit, but I think it would have been much better as an animated show akin to the League of Legends TV show on Netflix.

Inverno663d ago

Yea but the good to bad ratio still leans more to the bad. All the ones you pointed out have been pretty great, can't wait for season 2 of all those shows. With that said, you can't "fall short" unless it's on purpose, in this case it's Borderlands. These characters, the world, the lore is/are fleshed out, there's a ton of source material, there are 7 games!

Kosic664d ago (Edited 664d ago )

But BL3 is the worst one in the series....should do #2 and experience Handsome Jack

Michiel1989663d ago

there was no actor handsome enough available to play Jack

DustMan663d ago

Nah. Tiny TIna's Wonderland is the worst in my opinion. I enjoyed 3 more than the "pre-sequel" and Tiny Tina's Wonderland.

Dudeson663d ago

Agreed, at least 3 felt like borderlands, gameplay was great, bosses were interesting. Wonderlands was just a turn in the wrong direction, the idea seemed great, but playing through the game just didn't feel like borderlands to me. Also dlc scam.

porkChop663d ago (Edited 663d ago )

My issue with TTW is that it's supposedly a new IP in the Borderlands universe, not just a Borderlands game. Yet it plays and feels just like Borderlands with some magic tacked on. For every cool new idea there's a handful of ideas just rehashed from Borderlands. They really didn't do enough to make it feel like its own thing. It's still just an FPS with guns, except the guns are magical now. Why not focus instead on crazy melee weapons, bows, and magic/spells instead?

Lighter9663d ago

I'd say the pre-sequel because of the low gravity. That was horrible.

porkChop663d ago

In terms of gameplay BL3 is the strongest in the series. It's the narrative that really lets that game down.

ChronoJoe663d ago

Eh...

The story is definitely worse but there's more to these games than that. Gameplay, loot, endgame and build variety is definitely better in 3. I think they did a great job with the game, some of the DLC is fantastic too.

Kosic663d ago

I agree with people are saying. There's sole really good ideas in the games followed by some odd choices. I loved Bl2 , and I liked the presequel because it tries to explain Handsome Jack's downfall (YouTube game theory handsome jack).

Also PreSeq, has this really cool team play where talents could help pick your friends up from bleeding out. Athena throwing her shield if it bounces of a player they are picked up from dying. Head shots Aith the sniper chick etc.

BL3, I cannot get past the annoying social media influences, it's meant to be funny, it's just unbearable. Gameplay feels solid though. But I've not made it past lvl 20 ish on 3 tries. The story does not interest me, the classes are poor and talents feel bland.

gold_drake663d ago

i didnt like 3s sotry villains, like at all.

but i dont think any of the borderlands mainline games were "bad". i nejoyed all of them

but im not part of the community and play them mostly with my friends or alone.

there are worse games rly.

jznrpg664d ago

I totally forgot there was a movie coming out. I’m not a big fan of adaptations mainly because most of them suck and they take away from me playing video games. I didn’t get into Borderlands 3 game. 1 was my favorite 2 was pretty good but a third with more of the same didn’t interest me much to begin with.
