Days Gone Is A Good Game With A Bad First Impression

While its first ten hours are nothing special (and even arguably just plain terrible), Days Gone eventually becomes something almost excellent.

The first few hours do take some time to open up the world.

Obelisk922588d ago

I absolutely agree with this article, in the first hour of gameplay I thought this game was terrible.

But 10 hours in I'm really enjoying it. The only bad thing was the introduction.

IamTylerDurden12588d ago (Edited 2588d ago )

I enjoyed it from the jump. I recognized the quality. I loved the atmosphere, visuals, biking, and stealth. I was intrigued by the story notes and excited about where it could take me. The opening cutscene should've been fleshed out more, but i still liked it.

I realize the narrative picks up and the hordes kick in later, but the first time you are escaping from a freaker pack only to be trip wired off your bike by bandits and now injured, stuck in the middle of a bandit/Freaker brawl not sure if u should run or swing at anything moving is awesome. The first time a wolf rolls up on you and you think you can handle it only to realize three of his buddies are right behind him then you run to your bike which is stupidly far hoping that you'll actually run into Freakers so the wolves and Freaks can have at it while you narrowly escape. Surviving your first roadblock or sniper and bandit ambush. Your first NERO checkpoint when the speakers start going. That nest you expect 2 Freakers to run out of and instead what feels like a dozen are chasing you across the cemetery.

TekoIie2588d ago

"stuck in the middle of a bandit/Freaker brawl not sure if u should run or swing at anything moving is awesome"

Oh that's easy you just run. Melee combat in this game is terrible so you definitely run.

nucky642588d ago

do not listen to tekolie - he hasn't played the game. the melee gameplay in this game is the best i've ever seen - it beats dying light and i didn't think that was possible.

TekoIie2587d ago (Edited 2587d ago )

"do not listen to tekolie - he hasn't played the game. the melee gameplay in this game is the best i've ever seen"

He's right it's even better than God of Wars -_-

Knushwood Butt2587d ago

I'm only several hours in (less than 10?) but I've been relying on melee. You just need to try and go one on one with enemies and watch their movements so you can roll away from their attacks.

IGN is full of 💩 giving this game a low score. After putting in 20 hours I would give this game an 8

Larrysweet2588d ago

Y does everyone go to igns 6.5 when gamespot gave it a 5 thats the tragedy

Samus7072587d ago

Huh... who knew 2 women wouldnt enjoy a game about being a turbo-macho biker bro?

Pennywise1382587d ago

Many websites gave it a pretty low score. Haven’t played it yet myself so I’ll reserve judgrbut I do have to laugh at the fact that when websites, especially IGN give a game a really good score they are accused of being corporate schools taking money for payed reviews but when they gave an antic it game a low score they are just a bunch of shitty journalists that don’t know anything about games. Damned if you do damned if you don’t I guess.

lxeasy2588d ago ShowReplies(1)
bluefox7552588d ago

I don't see that as a problem though, it gets you invested in the story.

Heavenly King2587d ago

@Larrysweet That review is just a mess. How could they give Anthem a Story driven rpg that has not story, no content an a lot of glitches a 6/10; an then give to days Gone, a game with a lot of content, great gameplay and story a 5/10??

alb18992587d ago (Edited 2587d ago )

I understand that for some this game is terrific good but I understand too to IGN, Gamespot, Kutaku and the people that think the game is a 6 or 7. What I don't understand is how many articles will be post here about how misunderstood is this game just because it didn't got a 9......wow!!
Just accept that for some isn't that good.

Adexus2588d ago

Definitely wouldn't say a "bad" first impression as I was enjoying it from the off but it definitely gets far better as you get into the world and the gameplay loop.

It does remind me of Mad Max which is honestly one of my favourite games, the bike is just addicting to ride around on just like driving was on Mad Max.

Hroach6162588d ago

I agree. Loved mad max. Just replayed it last month. Days gone def has a similar gameplay loop. I was saying it reminds me of it a bit to.
Mad max was pretty much panned on release. It was/is such an under appreciated game. I think this game will be the same. Although I’ve found user reviews for Days Gone are a lot better than they were at the time for mad max.

jznrpg2588d ago

Mad max is dope . I remember the reviews and they were very wrong on that game too

BrettAwesome2588d ago

Yes. I agree with all you guys. Mad Max might be hard on rinse/repeat. But man, that atmosphere. 1st class world building, great vehicle combat, and one of the best looking games of 2015. Ok, this might sound really lame, but in some ways it reminds me of Breath Of The Wild. That sense of being on your own in a vast, magic world...

rainslacker2587d ago

I always try to put in more than a few hours into any game, even if I think it's bad at first. There are so many games I can't seem to get into, or think I'll hate until I play them for a while. Once I get past that weening period of learning the controls, and get an idea what the dev was going for, and what kind of game it will be, I can start enjoying it sometimes. On rare occasions, I still can't stand it after quite some time, but generally those are actually really bad games.

BrettAwesome2587d ago

I get that. A friend of mine has his golden "7 hour rule". But ofcourse it depends on the type of game and such.

I been enjoying it from the first moment. The gritty biker protagonists weren’t my cup of tea but I appreciate new types of characters being represented. I mean after all that’s why we like stories. They take us to places and experiences that we wouldn’t have otherwise.

ClayRules20122588d ago (Edited 2588d ago )

Well said. I’ve enjoyed every minute of the game. Deacon, to me, is a likable guy. I’ve really enjoyed his simple moments with Sarah.

ravens522588d ago

Deacon is weird and doesnt show too much emotion. But i think its do to things that have happened. When they showed flash backs he was the same jus not as weird. I think he yells too much for no reason. Some bugs, frame rate issues (havent updatedthe game yet) , the cut scenes could be put together better. Other than that im enjoying the story and gameplay, def an 8+.

HotMoltenLava2588d ago (Edited 2588d ago )

The damage control for this game is strong. It is an opinion. The review scores do not affect you enjoying the game. Some people who review the game think it's an ok game. So what. Get over it and play the damn games you like.

IamTylerDurden12588d ago (Edited 2588d ago )

First off, the game is far superior to the 72 Metacritic that review sites like Slant (3/10) helped create.

Second, people are getting carried away acting like a 72 is a 60. Clearly 72 is not great, but some of you are talking as if reviewers absolutely obliterated this game. Truth is, Days Gone is polarizing and a large number of critics actually scored it well. There is a huge contingency of people who love this game, it isn't universally panned. Games like Left Alive, Jump Force, Crackdown, and Anthem were thrashed by critics and generally accepted as terrible games. They scored far lower and were deeply flawed. Days Gone is not that, in fact, Days Gone is more closely associated with games like Dying Light and Vampyr.

Oh, by the way..the game is good.

Razzer2588d ago (Edited 2588d ago )

The trolling for this game from folks who will never play the game is also strong.

Imortus_san2588d ago

So you are saying just because someone did not played the game He/her as no wright to talk about it!? You do know that people have eyes and gaming experience, you dont need to play a game to say it's bad or good, it's all about personal preferences.

Razzer2588d ago (Edited 2588d ago )

That is not what I said at all. First, you have every right to say whatever you want to say about a game. But if you are making judgements based on an uninformed opinion then others are going to call that out....as is their right. Watching a game is not the same as playing the game. If someone says after watching some gameplay that Days Gone doesn't look like a game they would enjoy then there is nothing wrong with that. Or if someone is making remarks on the graphics. Stuff like that...yeah...fine. But make wholesale judgements as to whether the game is good or not? Bullshit.

If a game reviewer prefaced a review with a disclaimer stating the review was based off of watching someone play the game on Twitch then that review would rightfully be torn to shreds. Same goes for trolls who have no intention of playing the game at all.

nucky642588d ago

Imortus_san, what does having "personal preference" have ANYTHING to do with the quality of a game?

Razzer2588d ago Show
Imortus_san2587d ago

@Razzer and nucky64

That was a good call and good reasoning, but seeing some reviewers gave it a 6 (barely acceptable), it just proves the quality of the game (or anything else for that matter) is personal preference since it's all a "point of view" and an option gave by some one, so yes people will disagree and say this is not a good game and they don't need to play it, that's just the way it is.

And considering that games hardly sell 10% of the install base its more often that people that don't play the game will talk about it since they represent 90% of the user base just dismissing there opinion is incorrect after all they represent the majority of the user base.

Razzer2587d ago

" so yes people will disagree and say this is not a good game and they don't need to play it, that's just the way it is. "

If a game genre isn't your thing then that is personal preference. But I'm assuming every one of the reviews of 6 were from people who actually played the game. If not, then their review is worthless. Yes.....you've got to play the game. That is fundamental.

"And considering that games hardly sell 10% of the install base its more often that people that don't play the game will talk about it since they represent 90% of the user base just dismissing there opinion is incorrect after all they represent the majority of the user base."

Again, it depends on what is being said. I can talk about what I've seen of Sea of Thieves. But only up to a point since I haven't played it. If I start talking shit about it though, you can be sure I'm going to be rightfully called out for not actually playing it. A video game involves interaction. Hand-eye coordination of the controller with what is happening on the screen. That is crux of a "game". Gameplay is said to be the most important aspect of gaming. You can't talk about "game" "play" without "playing" the "game". Period.

Imortus_san2586d ago

"But I'm assuming every one of the reviews of 6 were from people who actually played the game. If not, then their review is worthless" - absolutely, I was just referring to the people that comment here.

"Gameplay is said to be the most important aspect of gaming. You can't talk about "game" "play" without "playing" the "game". Period." - you don't need to play a game to know it as frame rate problems and bad frame pacing or shuttering DF does that for you, also many reviews talk about the controls, and on videos you can easy spot lack of gravity in cars/chars and many others, it's not so black or white, but I get your drift.

ravens522588d ago

Isnt the comment section ment to discuss these types of things???... Im confused. Why are we all commenting on an article...

nucky642588d ago

well, when a game is being attacked by uninfomed people or reviewers who are making HUGE errors in their reporting because they didn't put very much (if any) time in the game, i think it's ok when someone (like me) who has played over 20 hours gives an INFORMED response to the lies and tells someone why i like it.
you are correct in saying "play the games you like" . if i listened to reviewers, i'd had missed out on a LOT of good games.

Christopher2587d ago

I think it's a stretch to say that the reviewers who rated it lower made huge errors or didn't play the game all the way through. It is entirely possible that the people who played and reviewed the games just didn't like it and they hold up one thing more important than others.

Dark_Knightmare22587d ago

Who in here is damage controlling lol all I see are people who are enjoying the game and a select few usual suspects trying to crap on it.

Sony scrapping Days Gone studio's live service IP didn't come as a surprise to one dev

Responding to one user saying that they'll "never get over what they did" to Bend Studio, Morrison says: "To be fair we didn't make enough substantial progress over the three years I was there. I saw the eventual cancellation coming prior to it."

This live service push should’ve never happened in the first place! It put most of their major studios behind schedule big time.

Redgrave208d ago

A big thank you to Jim for this shortsighted, greedy blunder. A half thank you to Herman, because he stupidly kept some of them going.

The PS5 gen has essentially been a bust, though a few gems such as Returnal, Astro Bot, and Steller Blade.

We might not have had unnecessary remasters (Last of Us, Horizon) or remakes (Last of Us, again) if not for this. Alas, with the die already having been cast, we hope for a return to form.

But, along with the current state of the industry, I don't think we will get it.

S2Killinit208d ago

I disagree. Somy needs to be able to compete in all genre. They have nothing less than studios that do have successful live service games, including MS which is solely focused on service games. Sony had a live service success with Helldivers that people like to not mention in these articles.

TheColbertinator209d ago

Sony is stupid for thinking live service would work for them. Or anything else they do for that matter.

Inverno209d ago

To work on something for 3 years and say that no substantial progress has been on it seems to be the trend happening across the industry. It's one thing to work without stress or crunch but in 3 years they could've used everything made for Days Gone and had a sequel out by now. Or worked on something smaller that they actually wanted to work on and with actual direction.

Travesty209d ago (Edited 209d ago )

Sony was the one telling them to do something different. I don’t blame Bend Studios. It was a lot of pressure pushing live service titles out and it backfired.

DaysGone wasn’t a bad title. It sold pretty well too. It sold 8 million copies on PS4 as of 2021. Almost 2 million on PC as of 2022. I don’t know the remastered version but it sold decent for a game that was already on the PlayStation Catalog.
They should have let them make a sequel. The series was made to be a trilogy.
The canceled game was reportedly using the Decima engine. It would make sense if their next game would be using that. I know DaysGone was using UE4. But if they did make a sequel I would prefer Decima over UE5. But that’s wishful thinking.
I’m not against a Syphon Filter remake. But just give us something memorable.

isarai208d ago

This is where there's a huge misconception that everyone is still running with. The idea of a sequel wasnt taken off the table, ONE MANS PITCH for a sequel wasnt greenlit, there would definitely be more than one pitch for a sequel

Travesty208d ago

The one man was the former director of Bend Studios. It not being “greenlit” was what I was referring to when they asked if Bend Studios would be interested in making a Syphon Filter game, after they released Days Gone. Don’t understand what was misleading.

https://www.thegamer.com/so...

isarai208d ago

The misleading part is that studios get several pitches, their could've easily been like 3 separate days gone sequel pitches, just because he's director doesn't mean his pitch couldn't have been lame, i mean he was talking about it being a multiplayer game, that already sounds iffy. But everyone talks as if the idea of a sequel as a whole was dismissed and we just don't know that.

The Days Gone Remaster Is an Unsurprising Cash-Grab and Nothing More

Honestly, who is the Days Gone remaster for? Fans of the original won't find anything new here.

Christopher382d ago

I don't know why you're being downvoted. It is a new thing in the remaster. Perhaps it's not worth the $10 upgrade if you've played. But, I mean, if you never played the game, then just wait for it to go on sale, forget about it, and continue not playing it like you did for the last 6 years?

TheEroica381d ago

The downvotes are likely from the excuses... Horde mode doesn't obsolve Sony from cash grabbing its easily duped fanbase.

S2Killinit381d ago

I love how people call this a money grab while the real money grabbing is in other genres. But, I think people who are that dumb deserve to be fed with skins and micro-transactions, and don’t get to complain that single player games of this caliber are few and far in between.

IAMRealHooman381d ago

@TheEroica
they changed the header. it was originally the " Remaster has nothing new" or something similar.

Days gone is amazing regardless and for those that didn’t play the original I highly recommend.

SimpleSlave382d ago (Edited 382d ago )

Yes. All of Sony's Remasters - all the ones stemming from the PS4 library - are cash-grabs. When all they needed to do was patch them to run at 60fps, up the resolution, and be done with it. But then they had to actually care about Bloodborne, and that's a cardinal sin over at Sony.

On a side note. I just got The Sinking City Remastered for free, because I owned the game. Weird...

anast382d ago

The Bloodborne thing is a real issue.

SimpleSlave382d ago

I'm sure they banish people to the Nightmare Frontier if they as much as whisper the name in the office.

Bebedora382d ago

Cash-grab or not. As long the Bend Studio gets their share, I am for it. I don't know, but I still hope for making of a second title. However, in a way It's a cash-grab. They still put something extra to it (horde mode), that is.

anast381d ago

lol Yeah they seem to hate the idea of a new Bloodborne anything.

I've still got to play the shrinking city. I enjoy Lovecraftian stuff.

RaidenBlack382d ago

Hope the recent remasters like Sinking City and Oblivion, ups the ante and alters the industry's approach.
But what fans really want is just a straight up sequel ... oh and add sequel to 1886 as well.

GhostScholar382d ago

I would love a days gone sequel. Days gone to me is such a better game than the last of us. The world in days gone was so great.

382d ago
mkis007381d ago (Edited 381d ago )

To me they appeal to different players outside of just being zombie games. I like them both, but days gone is more fun to me. The last of us 2 is my murder game though along with red dead 2 and gta 5. Love the realistic violence.

jznrpg381d ago

I’m a big fan of Days Gone but TLOU is a better made game. How much you enjoyed each game is of course up to you.

neutralgamer1992381d ago

With the recent cancellation of Bend Studio’s live-service project, there’s now a real and exciting opportunity for the studio to revisit Days Gone 2. This might be the perfect time for Sony to greenlight the sequel—especially with the PS6 likely on the horizon—because Days Gone already has a strong foundation, a passionate fanbase, and significant untapped potential.

It’s worth remembering that Days Gone was Bend Studio’s first major AAA title developed for a home console. Before that, the studio had primarily worked on portable systems like the PSP and PS Vita, or acted as a support studio. That leap to a full-scale open-world console game was ambitious, and although the game launched in a somewhat rough state, that context is crucial to understanding its initial reception.

Gaming critics were often harsh in their reviews, frequently comparing Days Gone to other PlayStation exclusives that came from more seasoned console studios like Naughty Dog or Santa Monica Studio. Despite these comparisons and the early technical issues, Days Gone still went on to sell over 7.6 million copies—a remarkable achievement for a new IP. Even more importantly, Bend Studio listened to fan feedback and steadily improved the game through patches, updates, and optimizations. Today, Days Gone stands as a much more polished and enjoyable experience than it was at launch.

That kind of growth shows Bend Studio’s resilience and potential. A sequel would not only benefit from their hard-earned experience, but also avoid many of the pitfalls that affected the original’s development. Much of the foundational tech, gameplay systems, and world-building has already been done, meaning the studio can focus more on innovation and storytelling rather than reinventing the wheel.

Compared to the high-risk, long-development timeline of a new IP—which could take 5+ years just to get through pre-production—returning to Days Gone is both a smarter and more efficient route. If Sony and Bend Studio commit to Days Gone 2 now, there’s a strong possibility it could be a key PS6 launch title—offering a fan-driven, proven IP with greater polish, depth, and scope.

Let’s not forget Bend Studio’s deep legacy either. This is the same team that brought us Syphon Filter, a series that helped define early PlayStation experiences. With the right support and direction, they can absolutely deliver a worthy sequel that lives up to the franchise’s potential and the studio’s legacy

Days Gone PS5 Is a 'Really Good Piece of Work', Say Tech Experts

Sammy writes: "Back when Days Gone Remastered was announced, many fans were squinting to see the differences between the excellent original PS4 version and its PS5 re-release.

But now with the game readily available – and our 8/10 review declaring it the “definitive version of a fan favourite” – we’re beginning to get some meaningful tech analysis.

And according to Digital Foundry, this is not just the bare-bones resolution upscale some had anticipated – “a lot of effort has gone into it”, according to the tech experts. "

That's the nature of the beast. If a game like a movie does not meet certain numbers then they write off the franchise. EA scrapped DS2 because the DS1 remake did not meet certain numbers. I was hoping the remaster of DG and the fact it also came to PC would convince Sony to green light a DG sequel.
