Days Gone tech analysis: Bend Studios' Unreal world under the microscope

After more than seven years in development, Days Gone has finally arrived, delivering Bend Studio's take on the zombie apocalypse. It's a large-scale open world experience with a heavy focus on narrative and characters. To boil things down to their essentials, it's basically The Last of Us meets Far Cry and it works.

"Days Gone may have taken years to develop but it feels as if the studio has grown immensely - and it's a solid foundation on which to build its next (next-gen?) console game."

We can only hope. Better management and better experience with the engine and tools can result in a better future. We need more studios with potential, not just the few that matter to review scores.

Jin_Sakai2571d ago

Agreed. I think Bend should go with a new IP on PS5. While Days Gone looks amazing it’s an average game and there’s really no room for a sequel.

SamPao2571d ago

Uncharted 1 was an average game :P

Araragifeels 2571d ago

Well Sony Bend are working on another game for PS5 while they were doing Days Gone.

Jin_Sakai2571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

What’s with the disagrees? You guys really want a sequel to this game? I’d rather them go with a new IP or a new Syphon Filter on PS5.

darthv722571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

"What’s with the disagrees?"... Maybe they are from rational people who know that the first outing of a new series isnt always the best. It generally sets things up to be outdone by the follow-up while the third generally closes things out (if it's a trilogy of course). So the idea that this game being average does not make it bad or that there shouldnt be a sequel.

If every game closed up after the first iteration because of being labeled as average then we would have such big hits like Uncharted 2, Gears 2, Halo 2, God of War 2, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Infamous 2

PygmelionHunter2571d ago

@SamPao

No, it wasn’t. It was damn good, and the mo-cap used in it was beyond amazing for the time, specially for a console game.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss was an average, although brilliantly written (hilarious characters), game. Take a guess at who the developers were for that one...

thatguyhayat2571d ago

I think they aren't they? They have multiple titles in development according to them

The 10th Rider2571d ago

@PygmelionHunter,

Yeah, it wasn't as good as Uncharted 2, but it was still a well received and good game.

@darthv72,

All the game series you mentioned started with interesting premises. Days Gone is okay, but there's nothing about the premise that really stands out. I don't think it would be bad to follow up with a sequel, because as you said many game series have a rocky start, but there's also nothing about the game that makes a follow up a particularly interesting idea. That's unlike, for instance, the Order 1886, which wasn't the best game, but it had an interesting and unique premise that could have been followed with an even better and more interesting sequel.

darthv722571d ago

@10th, agreed, the order is one I would really like to see continued. I liked the premise and it would have made for a good sequel.

The 10th Rider2571d ago

@darth,

For sure. I'm pretty critical of the game as it is, but it's a real shame there hasn't been a sequel. The groundwork was there and the idea was fantastic. When it comes to Days Gone I just don't feel particularly inclined either way as to whether or not they should continue it.

Got my copy a day early and have played the game for just a little over two hours. Here are some spoiler free initial impressions. I'm playing on a Ps4 Pro 4k HDR set up.

The graphics are absolutely tremendous and are crystal clear. For comparison's sake, Red Dead 2's open world was a blurry mess on my pro and the HDR implementation was very sub standard. Whereas the HDR on Days Gone is tremendous.

Atmosphere. This is absolutely top notch and is my favourite thing about the game so far. The day to night cycle and the stormy wind & rain effects are superbly crafted.

Controls on foot. Buttery and silky smooth, very intuitive and easy to get to grips with. So yet again, another area, along with graphics where it trounces the awkwardly cumbersome controls of RDR2.

Controls on bike. Initially this felt a smidgeon on the light and flighty, but with upgrades and a few subtle changes, my ride is weighty and a joy to slide around on. I would have liked the bike to be a little quicker.

Gun combat. Another area where it is far better than RDR2.

Hand to hand melee combat. Surprisingly weighty and visceral after the earlier videos from last year. Another area where it betters RDR2.

Story. I'm too early into the game to give a valid opinion, but I have enjoyed what I've played so far. This is where RDR2, In my opinion may win this round.

Sound effects and music are absolutely fantastic.

Have not yet encountered the huge hordes. So far, I have loved what I have played up to this point and I'd score it a very solid 9.

The-Matrix-has-you2571d ago

Thank you for posting something positive about the game. All of those points sound great to me and I can’t wait to get my copy tomorrow. Enjoy the game man!

DerekFlint0072571d ago

Cheers and many thanks. Have a fantastic time playing the game tomorrow. I have played pretty much all the Ps4 heavy hitters, ie Uncharted 4, God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Spidey & and from what I have played so far, this title ranks right alongside the aforementioned games in quality and sheer production value.

DerekFlint0072571d ago

A couple of quick updates. Initially, I was finding the gun combat quite difficult and it was harder than I was expecting, especially landing a headshot. Not to worry though, as I have realized and found out, that there is a skill tree of leveling up your ability. I don't want to spoil anything other than to say It was imperative that I "focused" on the task ahead. Now I'm blasting enemies like John Wick.

The-Matrix-has-you2570d ago

@Derek

Been playing the game for a few hours now and I gotta say it’s awesome. It’s gritty, atmospherical and challenging. I feel like a lot of people are hating on the game because it challenges the player.

Traecy2571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

I believe you that's why I'm definitely picking up my copy tomorrow morning. Enjoy yourself playing the game!!

dekke2571d ago

@DerekFlint007
played it earlier few hrs aswell and gotta agree with everything what u said =)

Hardiman2571d ago

Yessir I got mine early too and it's installing as we speak. Love these types of games and everything you said is what I was expecting. Have fun playing!

DerekFlint0072571d ago

Cheers and many thanks Hardiman and also to dekke and Traecy above. You too, have a great time enjoying the game. Another quick mention is that limbs are destructable for both human and freaker enemies. Arms, heads and legs can be either blasted off with a weapon or sliced off with a melee tool.

kingcorey2569d ago

Iv played about 10 hours now and i agree with everything you have said. I do feel the enemy's are too spongy and a few of the cutsceans audio is out of sync. Its kind of jaring going from god of war to this i must admit with the loading and black screens.. Its an amazing game so far tho and i want more

DerekFlint0072569d ago

Yeah Corey, the game isn't perfect by any means, but the main reason I posted my original comment, was because, in my opinion the game did not warrant some of harsh reviews. There seems to be, in my opinion, a smear campaign going on against this title as it's a Sony exclusive. Your right though about the audio clipping & spongy enemies. Bend studios should hopefully address this & other minor bug issues in future patch 1.05.

A few negatives that I have encountered thus far are that it makes my Ps4 Pro sound like a jet engine. Some of the transitions from gameplay to cutscene are rather abrupt and could have been edited better, but my main gripe is that you cant go further than a few km and you have to search for a bloody petrol canister.

However, most of, if not all of the above could be addressed in a patch. I'm roughly at the halfway point and still loving it and would still score it between 8.5 to 9.3. Plus there is also the fantastic added bonus of the free upcoming single player DLC content from Sony Bend studios.

Enjoy the game & the rest of the weekend Corey.

Knew this game would polarize but it shouldn't. If you are tired of open world games, you probably shouldn't play it. I saw a 1.5 and I don't put much stock in reviews(if they line up with my impression, cool, that's how most things work with people) especially numbered reviews. If I did a 1.5 would mean a broken mess! I know it's easy for people to look at and go oh it's a 9 or ouch it's a 3 but games that are so big like Days Gone, HZD, AC Odyssey, Wild Hunt for me I couldn't imagine just blowing through it for a dead line. I've spent years playing some of the games I mentioned, years and the enjoyment I've gotten from those adventures is amazing.

The point is emergent games are hard to nail down because so many variables are in play. I'm not always looking for a reinvention of the wheel, I like fun and as long as it controls well, looks and runs good and the world is immersive I'm good.

Again knew it would polarize because it's a Sony exclusive and that is a high class to be in but Eurogamer's stealth in depth breakdown really reiterated my feelings towards Days Gone. I can't wait to get it installed!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio10d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing10d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9210d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit10d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing10d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster929d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
