We Have Concerns About An All-Digital Future

In November of 2013, Microsoft faced blowback after revealing that their new console would require an “always online” internet connection and that game ownership would be tied to players’ Xbox Live accounts, making it harder to trade in games and even lend them to friends. Sony capitalized on that blowback with their infamous E3 dunk. But now, looking towards what seems like the final year of this console generation’s life cycle, the “always on” digital future of consoles that once worried us is basically upon us once again.

I have concerns about Kotaku.

Ristul2622d ago

Hipsters and missfits, but on this topic I aqtually agree with them.

rainslacker2622d ago

This is quite the change of opinion from kotaku though. They have adamantly been against used game sales, and last gen said that digital was the way to go to prevent that. They spent a lot of time defending ea and Activision over the issue.

They seem to have had a change of heart somewhat since the x1 reveal, where to their credit they were laying hard into ms. Since then, while I wouldn't call them pro Sony, they certainly dont seem like ms is giving them reach arounds for positive coverage as much as they used to

Kinja runs a sh*tty operation. Their engine is old. Editing is now disabled. Uploading an image can be a pain. You can't block anyone. Kinja needs a modern upgrade.

darthv722623d ago

But... its NOT an all digital future (not yet). This is just an all digital option, not an absolute. The next round of home consoles will support physical media as well as digital (like we have currently). If there will be another digital only unit then it too will simply be an option for that type of consumer.

Godmars2902623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

Do you honestly not know what "future" means?

If the non-disc XBs sells well enough, MS will migrate to all non-disc systems. They effectively started this gen with the intention to phase out need for physical media.

darthv722623d ago

They are all going to be non disc at some point. Ive already accepted that. Everyone should.

"Come into the light, all are welcome. There is peace and serenity in the light."

mcstorm2622d ago

Tbh we are that way now on both the Xbox one and ps4. How many games that come out are complete on discs

I get people want to buy discs and I do think it will be an option for the next few gens but just like Films and music digital will become more and more the standard.

Its not microsoft trying to be gready and control things its just the cycle of technology. How many games on pc sell on a disc in fact how much software comes on one now?

DrumBeat2622d ago (Edited 2622d ago )

I think he does, but that doesn't seem likely, even in the future, so I disagree with the premise of this article. It's an option, nothing more - and in this case, options are fine.

I think we're always going to have physical in the mix.

Tross2622d ago

@Godmars290 If MS does that, it will just discourage me even further from supporting the Xbox brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2622d ago

@mcstorm,

Physicals discs are still popular for movies here, but streaming and digital certainly killed off all the rental video stores, music is pretty much digital or streaming now, not many people are buying the cds. I still prefer my game son disc though.

The issue here is that this future isn't occurring naturally, isn't what the actual general market wants, but is happening because - certain? - companies want it. They want to retain full control of something supposedly - once - sold as a complete product, and then they want continual revenue well in excess of what may have been a reasonable price. "Priced at what the market can bare" has become an extinct term in the era of DLC and especially loot boxes.

Don't think the "Games as Art" argument has helped anything, given that games compromised for monetary value well over any and all possible artistic value have shown to have little to no of the latter.

x_xavier_x2622d ago

Are you suggesting that only "certain companies" yearn for an all digital gaming platform? If that's what you believe then your hopelessly naive...or staggeringly biased. All hardware manufactures, developers and publishing companies would love to have complete control of the distribution of their content.

maybelovehate2623d ago

Phones are all digital, tablets are all digital, almost all laptops are all digital. Not sure why you insist consoles remain in the stone ages.

Poor comparison maybelovehate. Games consoles are very different. To a lot of people game consoles are actually an only option because they're not all digital.

_LarZen_2622d ago

But then again it’s not a viable option anymore is it seeing the size of patches these days. And games and it’s patches are just increasing. Especially as we get closer to next-gen where 4K assets will be a thing.

maybelovehate2622d ago

Games are already all digital. Just the methods you use to buy them aren't. Even if you buy a bluray disk, the game isn't played from that. It is transferred to the HDD because blurays cannot be read fast enough for gaming experiences.

trouble_bubble2622d ago

I don’t AAA on my phone and I don’t movie night on my tablet. Just ‘cause your toilet has water doesn’t mean you should drink it.

ShadowWolf7122622d ago

..."Stone Ages"?

LMAO

I guess physical ownership not tied to a website or DRM ecosystem is the stone age now. Sweet Jesus.

DrumBeat2622d ago

That's poor reasoning.

Reminds me of that silly Carvana commercial. I'd rather go to a dealer, actually. Some things should remain as is.

rainslacker2622d ago

I insist they have a stone age option because I prefer to stay in the stone age myself. Don't care if you think I, or a bunch of us, need to get with the times. It's my money, so I'll spend it on products I want, and what I want is physical media. My reasons are my own, and that's good enough for me. If consoles go all digital, I can get caught up on my huge back log, and maybe one day, I'll buy those games cheap, since to me, I'm only willing to spend a limited amount on a digital copy of a game, and its nowhere near what I'd spend on a new physical game. Significantly less.

RCslayer2622d ago

Stone age of owning your games, being able to trade/sell your games. Getting games that are years old for cheap. Yeah, the stone age sounds great if you ask me. But hey we all know the gamers of today are as dumb as shit anyways right. They like not owning, they like paying full price for games that are old, they like to sit on their lazy ass and not have to go to the store and buy.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio56d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing56d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit56d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing56d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
