This has happened for years in games. It’s annoying, but this is making it out to be a big deal. From my experience a fix is never implemented to differentiate a partial word from a full one. Just name it “shooty blasty” and call it a day

Maybe they're going for realism. Military wouldn't call it an assault would they? They'd call it a strike. Sounds better for PR if things go wrong.

This has happened in every game with text based chat since the start of auto censoring in mmos. This is not news or some dumb political agenda. Its just the limitation of autotranslate software.

Don't get me wrong I also think censoring chat is pointless and stupid. The point is that it has been going on for a long long time. This is not news and not the political agenda this dumb article is making it out to be.

It is simply standard practice. Not something Ubisoft did to make some kind of stance on language.

I remember this being a thing in the 90's as well. Comes from loose parsing of the string data to determine if it's allowed or not. No real way around it if you want to censor the word itself in those scenarios without more complex algorithms which are mostly just a waste of resources in the bigger picture.

This is why we cant expect algorithms to predict censorship or copyright. They just don't understand the complexities of human language.

I dont understand why "ass" is even a filtered word anyway. Is it not a rated M game? Is it just their own personal loadout? Doesnt normal television say worse words than ass all the time? It makes no sense to me.

I see, it’s a program that did this. That makes more sense than a person doing it, and just makes me that much more weary of a future where everything is automated. Perhaps the executives at Ubisoft should assess their assets and call in their assistants to help assemble a better system to assuage this situation.

@DaDrunkenJester And here I was thinking I failed us all for forgetting to include the word assimilate in my sentence. Ubisoft’s associates would be so disappointed. I’m probably going to keep thinking of words like that all day.

Yep. The program has a list of words that are not allowed. For each word it takes the string data, separates it, and checks to see if the string of letters in that disallowed word exists in the word being examined. If so, then it censors the word, or takes some other action. It's a very common form of moderating text in public chat rooms, and in forums like this one, although they don't use one here. I think reddit and Steam do though, as i see censored words on there.

If say "butt" wasn't allowed, then it would censor butter.

There are ways to see if it's part of another word, but it's a much more complex program, and generally not worth implementing for general use.
