for any new tech it will have to come after 5 years at least, and if they r planning to rival blue ray now then they will lose because by the time of the new tech comes out blue ray will have several price drops including the ps3!!

it will no chance of competing with all the blue ray in the market and ps3!!

besides blue ray can hold up to 500GB so if there is a need for more space(i dont think that the case now) then they will upgrade with FW update the current blue ray players to be compatible to the new disks!!

its good to have new and cheap technology but its not good to miss up the market and make confusion

RDM has a military grade encryption so its harder to create piracy off of it about about 30 times more powerful then blu ray , and its 100 gbs of memory on a single disk, and it uses red laser, so its faster at reading the disk :O, that pioneer 500 is humongously thick, how would that even in a ps3?

Why bother? According to the BR bashers DD it the wave of the future and physical media is on it's way out(I don't agree). It's great that it has 1920p. But who has a 1920p TV?

If movies are put on RDM, I can see RDM replacing Blu-ray much faster than Blu-ray replacing DVD. RDM's lasers are inexpensive which is the biggest selling point. Most casuals refuse to switch to Blu-ray unless they bought a PS3.

Do you know anyone you owns a separate Blu-ray player? I don't. I don't know anyone that uses Blu-ray except for a few that have Blu-ray drives in their PCs or PS3s. I don't see many casuals buying PS3s either.

If the RDM player is very cheaper than the Blu-ray players, I can see it being more accessible to people on a tighter budget. Be reasonable here, I'd upgrade to Blu-ray if the players weren't gimped in features compared to DVD and since the best Blu-ray player is the PS3 and it's at $399, I can't fit that in my budget.

Sure, the Blu-ray discs can reach 500GB using 20 layers, but how thick is that going to be and how much are the lasers going to cost to read it? It's going to be even more expensive than the players now. What if RDM could layer itself if that was feasible? If it used 20 layers it could reach 2000GB... it's not feasible though.

I'm done my little pro-RDM bit, disagree away.

We may not see it succeed on the market. Prices will be a bit high, as everything which is new and we haven't switched to bluray yet as a next standard for that matter.
Also... Since hd war win by bluray there were at least 3 news about uberawesome disc format which would hold all my furniture and few friends on one, single layer disc.
Also we don't need 1920p resolutions where 1080 isn't standard yet.

Cheap? OLEDs were meant to be cheap too...

Regarding the thickness of a 20 layer blu-ray.
Come on, do you really think Pioneer would spend millions of dollars developing i blu-ray disc so thick it won't fit in the players?
According to this article - http://www.pctechguide.com/... - on a dual layer blu-ray the distance from the disc surface to the front layer is 75µm, and that to the rear layer is 100µm.
This means then that a recording layer together with the adjacent spacing layer is 25µm. 25µm times 20 equals 500µm or half a mm. Seems thin enough to me.

I'm going by what they said in the article, if they said that it's going to sell less than Blu-ray players now... Never mind that's too much logic.

This seems like they're not making an entirely different disc. Basically, their making an upgraded DVD, set to replace the price of DVDs as they are now. It doesn't look too expensive to produce new players because you only replace one chip. How much could one chip possibly cost? I reckon it'll take over faster when it turns into a retail format which is in early 2009. Don't expect it to magically take over but it's going to make a presence.

And I got 11 disagrees on my last comment? You mean you like spending 200 dollars for a separate Blu-ray player? You mean you like spending 20+ dollars for a Blu-ray disc? You mean you don't want a cheaper alternative? I know you all have PS3s and all think that Blu-Ray is the sh!t but the percentage of actual Blu-ray sales would be minuscule without the PS3. Since the PS3 owners already have Blu-Ray player, they might as well switch over to Blu-ray. For the people who didn't switch over, they refuse to buy more expensive hardware to play Blu-ray.

tell me were you pissed as hell when Warner went blu... did you throw out your HD DVDs and external player for your 360? im sure you did. becaue you sound anti PS3 and ti sony... could be right. needless to say. the same people who said the and chimed the same thing about bluray were the same saying the same thing when CDs and DVDs were being introduced via the Playstation. so it stands to say, you defend a last gen product that took off to thanks to sony's foresight and the same is happening... DVD was realitively expensive at launch and as prices come down for manufacturing technology things become affordable... the same is happening now.

Do you really think that after all the work with switch and going one format that Movie studios are going to play confuse the customers again... we see where that went. What they dont realize is that Pioneer,Sony,and IBM made sure that the Blu-Ray is future proof and can be added with more layers to extend it from 50GB to 500GB and more.

It's great that it's display capability can exceed 1080p and all, but considering that 1080p has become the defacto standard in high definition right now, the entire point is moot. I'm glad that all these companies are looking at alternative methods of storage and all, but constantly trying to undermine Blu-ray isn't going to do anything. The movie companies have chosen their standard and I seriously doubt they're going to change their minds about it. Especially since the confusing HD media format war has finally been ended this year. Now people can feel confident in their HD purchases and enjoy watching them.

I agree with you. It's not going to go well with consumers. I understand that this RDM is suppose to surpass bluray but it's too late now. Movie studies already chose their format, disney is releasing blurays. I say Disney because Disney definitely will influence what movies many parent's decision. Once the blu-ray players is in the house, people will continue to purchase bluray. If RDM is release, the loser will be consumer and the producers will suffer. There is no room for RDM.

Looks like HD DVD supporters and 360 supporters cant cope with losing. First it was HD DVD, then it DD by the end of 2008 (which is now I believe lol) and now at the end of 2008, its suddenly RDM.

Oops, I guess the revealing of RDM at 1 November is no coincidence after all.

Blu Ray is the future. Noone else is going to switch over so try again.

Streaming technology will be a suitable option soon... HD streaming is coming soon, it's in Netflix and Sony is making TVs with streaming capabilities soon. The quality may differ but it's great quality, just not Blu-ray quality.

Most casuals really don't look for the absolute best but they're looking for cost efficient and quality. HD Netflix is the cost of Live subscription (could be a month's Live which is sometimes under 5 dollars at some retail shops) and the $8 Netflix subscription. You'll get 300 HD movies streamed to you for the modest price of 15 dollars at the least. Not bad for bang for your buck but it's not Blu-ray quality. It's higher than DVD quality though, depends on the bitrate.

I know a couple people already canceling their movies on demand service for HD Netflix.

As it stands right now. Anything thats being offered as digital download or streaming from any company (not just MS or Sony) is in its infancy and its not even near or close to Blu Ray by a longshot.

So all this talk about DD download crap, is BS from the 360 camp. From the looks of how slow its building up, dont expect to see any professional and reliable service for the next 7 years at least.

Not in 7 years... But starting in 18 days when NXE and HD Netflix comes out, it's a start remember. 300 HD streamed titles is a lot more than the launch BR titles. HD streaming isn't really DD, it's like super hi def Youtube with way higher resolution.

Granted that HD streaming doesn't touch Blu-ray in quality, it's still great quality. You don't need the best to enjoy it, it's very good quality. Like I said before, it's not going to take over but it's a very accessible option. More casuals would be warmer with HD streaming than buying a BD player.

Just think for a moment, imagine if didn't have a PS3. Would you buy Blu-ray? Most would say no.

I'm sorry but one of the reason I pick the PS3 was bluray. If I can touch it and if it's not tangible, I avoid purchase as much as possible. You can't sell DD in a second hand market, you can't loan to family and friends, you don't get the bonus content. For many, these are influencing decision. I like to display my collection, I like to look through it at a glance. I actually like to get up and put in my disc for a movie.

I understand where you're coming from UltimateIdiot911 but in my opinion, if I was going to sell my tangible copy to a second hand store, I might as well not buy it and just rent it. I use Netflix and I never bought or rented a DVD in ages. I'm not willing to switch over to Blu-ray just because it's the "next standard" or it has better quality, I'd switch over if it had all my favorite movies, and if the price is right.

If I wanted to share a movie with friends or family, I'd invite them over or with the new party system on the 360, and since half of my family owns one now thanks to the arcade model + the 20GB hard drive from Microsoft, I can now share movies with them over Live.

I respect your opinion how you like to show off your collection and have it with you, but I like my downloads and Netflix just fine.

FCC I can see your point about the HD video streaming and how some people will be taking advantage of it, but for people like me, even DVD quality streaming is out of the question. The best connection speed available to me here in Florida is 1.5mbps. That's not even good enough to stream standard definition television to my HDTV. It's a great option for those that have the network backbone to support those kinds of speeds needed for HD streaming, but for the majority of us with a connection speed lower than 20mbps it's simply not happening. Until that kind of broadband is available to everyone, HD digital distribution is not going to be a standard. Just another viewing option available to those who do.

I can see your point here, Og. Unfortunately those HVD's cost about 150-200 dollars per disc. And the drives that support them are reputed to cost over 10,000 dollars. I don't think I'd want one of those in my PS3. It'd be cool, but I'd be bankrupt.

you sir get a cookie. Not many understand this but consumers don't decide format, the movie studios do. They went blu and as time goes on you will too because they want it that way. at this point I would highly doubt they would put even the smallest amount of support forward for a new format as it would divide the market yet again, pushing consumers to rent rather than own which will net them nothing.

Yes it might, but like i said below - they would be foolish to even bother with this. They are and could easily use blu-ray, at this moment it would be the sensible thing to do if they were thinking about adding another bigger more capable format to their console.

Blu-ray is getting cheaper to produce, it will soon be the industry standard and is recognized in most places, it will be much easier and cheaper to produce than this.

There is plenty of other formats that are much better than blu-ray, just none of them were as practical and cheap as blu-ray, yes it may seem expensive now but it wasn't any more expensive than DVD was all those years ago.

Not to mention it was all the big players in the media industry that developed it so they obviously had the power to push it forward.

To be honest, its more than likely that won't even go into mass production - there was a format that unveiled just after blu-ray won the format war that in theory held more than blu-ray and was alot cheaper to make than blu-ray, it was supposedly ready to go into production.

There have been format and there will be formats much better than blu-ray, but like i said - in the end that doesn't really matter when you have basically every big "player" backing it in the industry.

Just a thought.. but if this disc uses the red laser.. and all blu-ray players can play older discs that use the red laser, then this disc could really just be used with current blu-ray players, including the ps3 right? specially with just a lil firmware update.. lol..

But Blu-ray would have something to worry about though. It would also mean that DVD players might be able to play the disc. Which would mean that no one would need a Blu-ray player or disc. So while people who already have a Blu-ray player wouldn't have a problem getting the new movies, Sony would have a problem making money.

Plus remember the studios have always had a problem with there being enough encryption. They sound like they have enough. The studios would jump ship in a heartbeat.

Encryption is a function of the software... not the format. You will be able to use the same encryption on a CD...
Same as the so-called "better picture quality" that the HD-DVD proponents threw around. Not a format of the disk itself. They will most probably try and tell us that the compression on RDM is amazing... ignoring the fact that compression is a software funtion...

Simple things kids...
- Transfer speed
- Capacity

On a format that is all that counts - the rest is a function of the playback hardware and software.

The whole "better online functionality" of HD-DVD was stupid as well. It is all software... the disk format has *nothing* to do with it. Same as bragging that your Yaris with the new HiFi has better sound than my Porche - so it must be a better car.

BD is the current gen. Small incremental updates will not remove it. Next gen will be Terabytes, and will only be 5 years from now at the least. Get over it.

All those next gen formats can kiss my A$$. Digital Downloads are cool and all, but who needs that when we have the internet. I have one hard drive with over 500 movies sitting on it right now, and another with 8 different sitcoms (complete seasons) which can all be streamed over to the console of choice at the drop of a hat. Now when i have that capability - tell me why i would give a damn about a disc. Quality you say - hell i can download a 1080p blu-ray wmvhd file off the newsgroups right now and stream it to a 360 so even that aint no big deal and the size is only 8 gigs so again why do i need a blu-ray disc that holds 50 gigs - quality is spot on with 0 lag streaming over to the console. I definitely don't need it for interactive crap and extras i could care less about - all i want is the movie so i can get on with my life. Enough with the format war cause if Hollywood doesn't do something fast all the damn people in the world will figure out that they don't need satellite tv, movie theatres, DVD, Blu-Ray, VMD, etc cause the net has it all and we can stream to anything. What may or may not be legit is up to the consumer to decide. Enjoy your little b&tchf3st while i sit back and stream a copy of the dark knight over to an Xbox360 like nobody's business.

The specific reason that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD ever existed in the first place was to migrate towards the blue laser. Blue light has a shorter wavelength, therefore it is able to create bumps at larger microscopic levels and allows for more data to be written overall. I don't buy this RDM because in order to circumvent the bottleneck that is red-light, you'd have to either...

A. Re-create the way that discs are "burned"
B. Invent an entirely new material used to make optical media.(disc)

It's very possible that the disc media itself is of a new kind and that could potentially make up for the Red-laser's longer wavelength. However they're going to need to do alot of explaining as to how it's possible to have 100GB discs based on Red-Light without resorting to multiple layers. Multiple layers significantly reduce the read/write speed of discs due to the laser having to work harder. There's also the idea of laser-disc where disc manufacturers literally increased the physical size of the optical media itself to increase space, but that's a pretty long shot. As far as I know, I'm filing this in the "Probable, but not practical" folder.

The jump from DVD to Blu-Ray was in no way a small feat. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray largely exceeded DVD in every single way. It was true HD baby. But did this new format outshine its predecessor to the level which DVD had done to VHS? The jump from DVD to Blu-Ray/HD-DVD wasn't nearly as profound as the VHS to DVD transition. For its time, the DVD format was a massive upgrade from the previous format.

Blu-Ray is more like a DVD 2.0

It's another disc-related media format, which for one is unoriginal, and two, it's not nearly as innovating as DVD was (for its time and tech-extent).

Again, Blu-Ray was still a breakthrough. But it wasn't the peak of technology when it released. Blu-Ray isn't incredibly popular in modern times because its potential never impacted the world.

This new format has worthy technology but tell me were not getting another type of disc.

DVD's weren't that much more incredible than VHS, sure it looked better but there was not nearly the difference in video quality that the transition from DVD to BD has provided.

I don't know why people waste their time in coming up with this crap, RMD, VMD, what's the point!? Having a bunch of players sitting on shelves isn't a good thing, and them doing 100gb discs isn't that great, as someone above said BD's can go up to 500gb but I thought I saw a while back they could achieve 1tb with 25 layers or something. I am also sure that Sony isn't losing sleep over piracy concerns considering blank BD's are still pretty expensive, and people don't have the HDD space to hold true BD rips that aren't compressed all to hell. Retards, 'nuff said

100, 200, and 500 GB. RDM uses so many layers to actually achieve 100 GB. BD only uses 4 layers to achieve 100 GB, and 8 layers to achieve 200 and so on. I honestly wouldn't care. I'd like to see this technology to kick in. And if anything, I'd love the PS4 to have something equal or better than the 1920p ... I wish the same for the XBox Pheonix as well. I think MS learned their f*ck up on the XBox and the 360, ... Pheonix should be a good system, if anything, to put a real fight aganist Sony's PS4. I'll purchase both in other words, as long as Pheonix lives up to be a real hardware system rather than limited, like the 360.

... you have one article claiming that Blu-Ray will go the way of laserdisc, then you have another article talking about another format that's better than Blu-ray, basically thinking it will be unanimously accepted by those who shun Blu-ray...

So, lemme see if I get this straight. Blu-ray is a FAILED format, and will never be accepted by the masses, but any format that comes after it, they'll eat it up... simply because it's not Blu-ray...

And considering that the only thing that page promotes is a DRM chip for dvd players ... lol ...

The strength of the encryption on the disc does not matter for copies as it always has to be decrypted for the customer to watch it on his TV. So this clearly shows that the smallest denominator in the whole chain defines the security. In this case you can use digital cables to record the resulting picture and create a perfectly fine COPY of the content regardless of the 2048 bit encryption on the disc, result? FAILED.

The touted RDM hasn't even released specs of any kind, smells like fraud to me.

Good luck getting all the studios that back Blu-Ray to agree to launching their films on RDM!

Lest we forget... HD-DVD was cheaper to produce and had a more complete feature set on launch... and still lost.

Yup, it sadly lost, although the movies still look good and I'm still buying them cheap.

Anyway, this is very interesting, if it's true. Honestly if it could work, the whole Blu-Ray advantage thing over MS would be moot. 360 owners would be able to experience longer loading uncompressed games! Yeah! We may be able to get that movie/game MGS4.
