Project xCloud input lag is below 10 ms, may only need 5 Mbps internet

Today, Google is supposedly unveiling its streaming platform, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from dropping some new information about its upcoming Project xCloud streaming service which is expected to enter public trials in 2019.

“Project xCloud input lag is below 10 ms, may only need 5 Mbps internet”

The catch.

“From the data centers we have near Washington we're seeing really good latency - less than 10 ms that's being added by the traversal to the cloud.”

Kribwalker2613d ago

Well its a good thing they have 52 public Data centres worldwide and they are still growing

DarXyde2613d ago

The fact that you've seen Microsoft do a cloud demonstration ages ago and the reality was no match for the legend when implemented into Crackdown 3 and you're giving them the benefit of the doubt now because they've got "52 public data centres worldwide" is pretty telling.

I'm sure Microsoft appreciates your positivity, but let's be very clear: this is not the first time Microsoft impressed people with their technology in a controlled setting.

UltraNova2613d ago

If people still believe anything MS is promising before seeing the actual released product they are hyping up, then what can I say anymore...

darthv722613d ago

sounds way better than stadia's speed.

NarutoFox2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

@crazy

Facts. I'm glad someone is reading between the lines.

TKCMuzzer2611d ago

It’s pointless any of the companies saying anything at the moment. We need real world situations to see what the actuals are.

rainslacker2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

I use MS servers quite often. Based on experience, lag is never that low. When I was in IT we had some of the best internet in the world at my work, coupled with one of the top 10 internet hosting servers in the world in terms of speed and reliability(surpassing even MS and google). I often used Google's backbones for routing our clients data, and often used MS various servers for whatever might be needed, and never once can I say that lag was that low on an application level. Between two servers, which you can control the routing, sure, I could send something across the world in a few ms of lag between sending and packet acquisition remotely.

But lets put it into real world terms for the average user. I have half that amount of lag internally at my home, but I went to great lengths to manage that, and have the know how and experience to make it happen. the ISP's are going to still have to route to the MS servers, and the ISP's in most areas in the US suck big time, and don't prioritize this kind of traffic. The average user will have no control over such things, and the average user certainly isn't going to go to the lengths I did, and it's all moot anyways if they're not at home, because if anyone uses public wifi, lag is pretty much a given.

Just for consideration, I spent $200 on a good wi-fi router for my home to get that kind of internal speed, coupled with more reliable bandwidth. I question anyone here who says they have a router that is equivalent to that from their ISP, because from all the internet services I've ever had in my life, I've only ever got a modem/router that was half decent from them once, and it still wouldn't give me that kind of low lag within my own network.

It's all well and good they can get 10ms lag time when accessing their servers, from their own servers, which circumvents pretty much everything but the DNS, if it even bothers with those at all, but in MS ratings, they're pretty much handling all the data themselves, and it is in no way a real world indication of how it will run for the average user.

Google talks about how they can prioritize their back bone lines, which is great. But it still doesn't remove the hops from your home to get to that back line, or the return trip to the end user. Just do to a tracert to any google DNS, or Youtube's own page, and see how long it takes to get to the first google main relay(IP's are available through search engines). It's going to be more than 10ms, or whatever google is claiming they have for removed lag.

Having more datacenters and prioritized access will help reduce lag, but both these companies are greatly misrepresenting what the actual user is likely to experience. Google and MS are talking about shaving off maybe 5-10ms from the overall lag, but making it seem like their own internal testing is a real world result. The internet just isn't designed like that, and even direct IP connections aren't direct, and prone to varying service reliability and performance. The end user has almost no control over what happens to the data once it leaves their home, and nothing MS or Google do will change that, and most ISP's aren't lining up to help these companies make this streaming future a reality. In fact, most are resistant to it because they want to make more money because of it.

crazyCoconuts2613d ago

Nice to see people here that know what tracert is. You in IT?

343_Guilty_Spark2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

You don't know sha IT.

rainslacker2613d ago

@Crazy

I was for a little over half of my professional adult life. I've worn many other hats during that time as I pursued other interests, but most of it was working as a networking consultant for the provisioning of IT security protocols for various kinds of networks. About 8 years ago I went back to school to study game design, and after a series of intern jobs, and a couple contracting jobs on major IP's, because of my work on various low level tools on those projects, and my knowledge of OpenGL, I was hired by a company that makes tools for various tasks to help developers write code faster. Specifically I now work on tools that help the rendering pipeline, and facilitate porting of games across different rendering API's. Along with a few other tools that I've come up with based on developer need, or just general curiosity(due to boredom during down times).

@343

Nice you say so. What exactly is wrong about my statement that is inaccurate? Maybe there are a couple details I left out, or maybe there's something new I don't know about, but I understand networks and the internet well enough to stand by my comment.

Feel free to correct me if you know something I don't. Just leave out the marketing hyperbole, because that doesn't impress me.

DarXyde2613d ago

Rainslacker,

I'm quite curious myself to see what issues 343_Guilty_Spark takes with your comment. Saying you don't know IT without any kind of input says, to me, that they don't have a clue about IT ["either"].

If you're going to disagree, stand by your statement with facts and sources.

So is not less than 10ms as the title states, it's less than 10ms of ADDED latency.

Razzer2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

Exactly. This isn't the actual latency at all.

Edit:
The real article title actually says that:
Project xCloud only adds 10 ms input lag, may need 5 Mbps internet

TheUndertaker852613d ago

“Frankly we find more latency in the Bluetooth stack, connected to an Android phone.”

Razzer2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

So more than 10 ms latency in the bluetooth stack to android? Seems obvious.

TheUndertaker852613d ago

Then how is it not impressive that a remote connection is capable of having less latency impact even versus a local piece of hardware paired directly together with no middle man so to speak?

Razzer2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

Impressive? lol....android bluetooth is not an example of low latency. That is exactly why aptX exists. Regardless, he isn't even referencing input lag at all when it comes to bluetooth, but the whole stack. That means anything that is bluetooth.

"may only need 5 Mbps internet"
Wow, so maybe half of the developed world can play it, probably less than that.
Internet speeds simply haven't got quick enough as to what was predicted they would be years ago.

elazz2613d ago

5mbps would also be for 720p and it does seem many would be able to reach. You'd need 25mbps for 4k30 or 1080p60 if you want an image with barely any artifacts but still not the best available detail.

I guess you might get problems if you're not the only one in your household. These companies forget we have many devices connected to a router so you'd need one where you can do prioritization, bandwith allocation, mimo and your isp need to be able to provide a high bandwith continuously.

In certain areas in the world all the above wouldn't necessarily be a big issue but in many places it would.

gam3r_4_lif32613d ago

I have 1 gig internet and I am getting offers to switch to a 10 gig service. According to Wikipedia over 100 countries have average speeds of over 5mb/s. The country where I live has average speeds of over 21 mb/s

Oh what timing... now that Portal is offering cloud streaming as well.

OtterX539d ago (Edited 539d ago )

Yea, it's incredible having titles available in handheld streaming format without having to have a console on. This is even better for traveling. I was messing around w it for the first time this morning and the quality was so good, I forgot at times that I was actually streaming. (1gbs) any minor imperfections aren't amplified like they would be on a big screen tv.

I guess XBox users can still do it if they have a Steam Deck, ROG etc, so nobody is left out. Streaming like this is best for handheld play IMO.

crazyCoconuts539d ago

I've tried streaming from various hotel chains while traveling. Hotel WiFi in general sucks and that makes streaming untenable

OtterX539d ago

@crazyCoconuts I guess it depends on your traveling style. I usually stay in privately owned hostels across our country who tend to invest more in good internet. I always check with them before I book.

OtterX538d ago

I just tested the Portal from our new home we're moving into, a 2 hour drive away and in the rural countryside where we have to run Starlink. No fibre available here, but getting 357 mbs, and I'm streaming my PS5 from our 1gbs at our old home. It's streaming perfectly, so not sure what you're going on about @crazycoconuts.

Neonridr539d ago

*for select titles, for premium members only..

Vits539d ago

What bothers me about this new Xbox offering is that you still need a Game Pass Ultimate subscription to play. It’s not like Stadia, where you could buy the game and play it without needing a subscription, which was only for extra features. So, who is this really meant for?

To use the service, you’d need to buy the game and keep paying for Game Pass Ultimate. That’s asking a lot, especially since Xbox console owners, who are probably the main audience for this, would likely prefer to just download the game and play it directly on their consoles. There’s a small case to be made for Xbox owners who travel often, but how big could that group really be?

As for Sony, their approach to streaming is also strange. They limit how games can be streamed locally. For example, the mobile app allows screen controls but doesn’t support most physical controllers, only the DualSense and, for some games, the DS4. Their reasoning seems to be that these controllers are needed for the proper features—yet the app lets you play with screen controls, and there’s even a third-party app that works with any controller.

Then there’s the Portal, which is basically a DualSense with a screen and an internet connection. But it’s only now getting cloud streaming, even though there’s no technical reason it couldn’t have had this from the start.

Bathyj539d ago

I was going to ask is this not what Portal is doing?

Are you telling me after all these years of bathering about cloud streaming you couldn't play your own games? WTactualF?

darthv72539d ago (Edited 539d ago )

playing your own games via streaming required the console (ala remote play). Now you can stream games you own without the need for the console to be on.

the xcloud beta was only for gamepass ultimate games and now you can stream ones you own regardless if they are in GPU or not.

Knushwood Butt539d ago

Power of da cloud, just a few years late.

redrum06539d ago

Still, that's for the Playstation Plus Premium/Extra library. This is for streaming games you own, which would've been nice to have on PS as well.

Kyizen539d ago

Different. Portal is catching up to Xbox Cloud Streaming but Xbox is catching up to Portal remote play feature it had at launch

darthv72539d ago

XB has always been able to stream games you own from the console (ala remote play).
The xcloud side let you stream without the console but only games in game pass.
NOW it is letting you stream games you own through xcloud without them needing to be in game pass.

Giodel539d ago

omg I AM SO SO SO SOSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired of this sites PS fanatism. This is an XBOX post for something XBOX does why do you have to go and mention portal? WHY tell me WHY?

VersusDMC539d ago

All the Fck horizon, Concord, PS5 pro articles and comments really make it a ps fanatic site...are you delusional?

Redgrave539d ago

Such is the nature of any gaming related website. It is inevitable. Unavoidable.

Some do it out of passion, some out of self amusement, and some just wish to sow pointless discourse.

Xbox posts will have Playstation comments and vice versa. Here, there, everywhere.

Nooderus539d ago

VersusDMC Yes i think most of the people that frequent this site have a positive sony bias.

Rockstar539d ago

Alright, calm down! It's just the Internet

redrum06539d ago

I know, N4G is known to be a PS centric fanboy site, it's ridiculous. Instead of constantly downplaying Xbox in whatever they do, maybe just be happy for the other. Competition is a good thing to have.

Michiel1989539d ago

@nooderus I honetly think there's nothing wrong with bias, but it really does seem that critical thinking goes out the window because of it, that part I just don't understand. Wouldn't people want the company/product or what have you to do the best they can instead of accepting everything they shovel towards you because you like them?

Gamingsince1981539d ago

Every site is playstation biased, because every one likes playstation and xbox is dead, what do you expect. That's like saying "this food site has a biased towards good food but everyone hates eating poo, it's so unfair to poo eaters"

cooperdnizzle539d ago

Well if you were on this site like 15 years ago you would know, that it was 99% Xbox fans and if you were Sony fans you had to fight tooth and nail to just say a game was good.

Second people like PS now days because it is by far the better platform.

Nacho_Z539d ago

Only seems that way ("PS fanatism") because Sony is currently on top. Naturally there will be more positive articles and comments about the front runner.

I really don't think Nintendo and PlayStation need to get caught up in this. Streaming isn't the future, yet and there's no rush to get into that market. If Nintendo is still selling a mass number of Nintendo Switch consoles, what does that tell you? It tells you Xbox is trying to stay relevant and bring everyone along with them, but, like PlayStation's own fans have been telling PlayStation "THATS NOT WHAT WE WANT" and PlayStation is learning the hard way they're not listening to their consumers like they were with the PS3 and PS5. But, this isn't what people want yet. Nintendos dabbling in it and PlayStation has been doing it since they acquired Gaikai, but it's never stuck. People that have been streaming movies and ditching it and collecting physical media again, it's slowly going back in that direction and they'll tell their gaming brethren not to fall for it. Theyre getting physical media and loading it on to their own servers to run on home servers within their walls THEY control, not the corporations that sell them a license, not a product they pay for and own. Imagine buying cloths or your house that can be repossessed whenever Nike, DC, Vans, or Reebok want to take back because it goes out of style when they say so.

Streaming may be the future but it's the distant future. Internet service providers can't even sustain that. Data caps still exist and internet isn't that fast as it's most affordable prices. You're attacking a REALLY niche market that's going to be received as well as the PS5 Pro. Xbox killed their brand with the Xbox One that wanted to integrate streaming into their games to further try and sell and incentivise Xbox Live and we saw that went. Streaming could very well cause the next gaming crash, is how I see it. The rest of the tech world isn't ready for that, especially during yet another trying economy

cooperdnizzle539d ago

Hey dude they can take your house back. It’s called property tax. Paying for something you already own.

But I agree, I have already had digital games taken from me. Sucks

jznrpg539d ago (Edited 539d ago )

More options are good but streaming as a whole has a lot of issues. I will always prefer dedicated hardware. I’m bring my PS with me when I travel. Internet is not good traveling

darthv72539d ago (Edited 539d ago )

A PS5 (even slim) does not make for a good travel companion. Meaning on the go, not in a closed environment like a hotel room, but on a plane or a train or an automobile... this is what works in all of those situations: https://images.purexbox.com...

Its nice an compact but obviously still bigger than a handheld. If you want that 'console' experience that is.

Rashers539d ago

That still requires power leads for both the console and screen.

127maXimus539d ago

Yeah but you would still have to buy them for Xbox.

Playstation was already doing this with Premium. A lot of the games I own are streamavle on PS5. I assume they will eventually add access to the Portal.

NotoriousWhiz540d ago

False. Only games Playstation allows you to stream are those available on PSN premium regardless of whether or not you own them.

What Microsoft is beginning to do is enable streaming of some titles even though they aren't part of game pass (as long as they are owned by the user)

Eonjay539d ago

It's not false. I bought Final Fantasy Rebirth on PSN and I can still stream it to my PS5 even though it's not part of Plus. Same with many many other titles. PlayStation has allowed this since they revamped their streaming service like a tear ago. This will eventually come to Portal streaming during the beta I am sure.

I would think their quarterly revenue will take a hit compared to a year ago, but will maybe make up for it throughout the year as the monthly GP subs keep coming in

Was up with call of duty man?
I downloaded cod on gamepass and for some reason I cannot access the game.

darthv72577d ago

just curious what version? There are some that you can pre-load, but they wont work until their release date later this month.

pwnmaster3000577d ago

I have to redownload it again for the 3rd time to check.
I ended up just deleting it to make room for other games after the second time.

It was on Xbox game pass, I didn’t know there was other versions. I just downloaded everything, but sadly I couldn’t even access the game. Maybe 3rd time the charm. I’ll download it again.

On xbox there is the last gen/current gen versions pc though you could also get a xbox version.

When that new forza first came out for one day they had the xbox version on the pc store i was like ? what it was odd.

On xbox you can easily download the one version of a game instead of the series version so you run into issues on your series console.
