After Anthem's tumultuous launch, are loot shooters in trouble? Here are a few problems that many see with the genre moving forward.
BioWare's multiplayer shooter Anthem was terminated this week because EA no longer wanted to maintain servers for people to play the game on, and without them, no one can play the game. But the former executive producer of Anthem has revealed that BioWare had technology working, close to the game's release, that would enable us to host our own servers to play the game on.

BioWare and EA had previously said the game would be accessible to those who owned it until it shuts down on January 12.

Time flies (like a Javelin suit): there are only 10 days left to play BioWare's ill-fated multiplayer game Anthem before the servers are switched off, presumably forever.
In my opinion, Anthem was a good IP that was worthy of a no man's sky or cyberpunk 2077 treatment.
To this day, their sub reddit is active and I was able to get into a game quickly a few weeks ago when I booted it up.
It is a shame EA and Bioware didn't want to give the game the overhaul it needed to turn it into a competent looter shooter.
I just finished this up a couple days ago. Although it's a bit repetitive and the story is meh, the game feels great to play. Even if you can only hop on the game for a couple hours before it shuts down, I think it's worth it.
2nd comment attempt (1st doesn’t appear & this may register as duplicate):
They can spend billions to buy or get bought but they can’t spend a fraction of that to fix or overhaul a game that could have been truly special, smh.
The real problem are the corporate execs that have sales targets, investment calls and profit margins in-mind BEFORE a game is even in develpment. For example Activision have lost Bungee, and you can bet you dog that the next game they publish (I'm looking at you Sekiro) will have a higher expectation to sell well, and their franchise staples will be expected to bring in more revenue from MTX to make up for the massive loss that they will take from losing Destiny.
EA are no different, they have suffered big loses over the last few month with BFV failing at launch, and now Anthem. Keep an eye on Apex Legends, with it's increasing sucess EA will see it as a bigger revenue stream and will lean on the devs to further incentivise and monetise.
make me a MP game like and Monster Hunter World OR Go away:
- No MTs
- grindy but still fun and rewarding
- Lots of content
- can be played solo and MP equally
- Free post launch content (With no ''content is to expensive to make'' excuse) and an expansion (Iceborne)
- No bugs. A polished game
Loot progression
Division 2 proves that looter shooters are just fine. BL3 has been leaked and I’m sure it will be a great game as well. Anthem just made poor choices in design and has technical issues.
BR just isn't a genre that can have multiple competitors it can only have one success story per year.
