Just What The Hell Is Sony Doing With PS Plus?

After the paltry number of games in March's offerings due to the removal of PS3/Vita games, what the hell is Sony planing to offer in their stead?

Lame article, its a sign of ps5 coming.

Spenok2632d ago

So you expect Sony to suddenly offer more when the PS5 releases?

You expect them to have a lot of offerings for PS5 games when it's brand new? Think again man.

MisterLou2632d ago

They did when ps4 launched...

Visceral892632d ago

Not a lot but do exactly what they did with the PS4 and release mostly indie games with maybe a gem like Resogun.

Rude-ro2632d ago

It is what Microsoft did. They added bc games to fluff.
If the rumors are true, Sony is bringing everything back...
If it’s good for the goose...

jukins2632d ago

@ SpenokYea why would Sony suddenly offer more when the ps5 releases. They didn't do it when the ps4 launched while still supporting ps3 and vita OH WAIT. . . . LOL just like ps4 sony will be more than likely be supporting ps5 with a ps+ offering at launch.

Rhythmattic2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

This next PS console will not be a new, unknown architecture......
(small print: I could be wrong, and if I am..)
(BIG PRINT : IDIOTS!)
Thats always been the issue (or not) in Sonys history...
I imagine this time around, the cost of BC wont be an issue like their previous gens....
Seriously, think about what MS has done, due to of the shelf (Though Modded) CPU's... X86/PPC...
Before anyone says it..The first Xbox 360 Dev kits where G5's...
As for Apple, they had rosetta incorporated into OSX, which ran Apps coded as UB (Universal Binary) allowing PPC code to run on Intel Macs transparently...... games and all......This is Years before everyone was gobsmacked at MS BC effort.

So to my point....
No Special expensive proprietary chips (though Heavily modded i guess).. ect.... Generally each release of any of their new SKU has some form of BC.. Until the PS4.... The cell was a MOFO , but the R&D, proprietary architecture (without doubt, so alien to developers in the beginning), and that BR drive, made it expensive... and no console , to this day have the power to emulate it. (As in run PS3 games locally.. to be clear)
But even taking into account the CPU/SPU/RAM/BR Costs, they still offered PS2 Compatibly with the integrated Emotion engine chip,...... Another cost !
Its the first time in Sonys console history, that their next gen console will be using the same architecture as the previous.... (I could be wrong?)

Imagine for the first time, Sony have the gates open .... And the PS5 platform (surely the same architecture) uses the tools that have been maturing since the PS4.

I really think, Sony, next gen , will not hit it out of the park, because a park isnt big enough .

URNightmare2632d ago

Reports say it will be backwards compatible, so, think about that, too!

raptorjacob2632d ago

@Misterlou I don't think they truly offered more when the ps4 was released. I remember online play was free with the ps3 and forced with the ps4. So they "offered" everyone free games with a required $50 subscription to play something that used to be free. How I long for the days of playing online free again. I recently started playing on pc a little bit and it is looking more and more enticing.

BrettAwesome2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

@Rythmattic
Yes. Precisely. To put it simply, PS5 represents the equivalent of buying a brand new PC. It'll still run the same, or a similar OS. It's still x86. It'll run the same stuff, but better, and it'll have the power to run simulations that's beyond the capabilities of the Jaguar cpu cores. What it basically means is PS5 will feel like exactly that. The next Sony machine, unlike previous generations, where new machines felt like a whole new product entirely. The PS4 is a quite simple "no bullshit" machine, and I have a very strong feeling PS5 will be the same. Different specs, but same basic layout. What ever "architecture" they choose, be it Zen+ or Zen2. And no matter if they replace the GCN cores, it'll all be build around a simple layout and x86 system architecture.

Do you like to talk tech? You can PM me if you like?

Visceral892632d ago

Could be, I'm still holding out hope the PS5 comes out at the end of 2019. Probably wishful thinking. Explain this to me though, why did Sony up the online storage to 100gb's? I play a lot of games and I'm at about 7gb of save data, the 100gb increase tells me it's in preparation for the PS5. That doesn't mean it's coming this year tho

Mr_Writer852632d ago

@visc

Agreed...Also if PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games all work well 100GB could be used very quickly.

2632d ago
blackblades2631d ago

Theres a lot of things that happen that make it seems it'll be coming soon.

gamer78042632d ago

So you are cool with it when a service you subscribe to cuts their content in half? I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been more of these articles. ps5 likely won't be here for at least another year.

JackBNimble2632d ago

I guess it would only really matter if you were one of the few who actually used all 3 systems up until now.
In my house we still use the ps3 and vita as well so the cut in content is noticeable, but for most people I doubt it really changes much.

Rhythmattic2632d ago

I have a PSP, PS3 and PS4... I Still have a backlog of games to finish on the PS3 due to PS+..
There was no need really to go + when the PS3 was my primary console, as online is free, but seeing all the games given away as subscription, I bit the bullet....
Now, for the last 6.. SIX years , PS4 is my main go to.....

And to show some perspective...... How many Android phones more than 3 years actually are supported by OS updates ect.. Most costing as much as a PS3 @ $199??

You might hate the fact Sonys dropping PS+ PS3 games as much as i hate a stone inside my shoe...
Luckily, both are really easy to deal with.

rainslacker2632d ago

I was one of the users who has every system that benefitted with ps+. While unlike getting all that free stuff, I haven't played more than 3-4 games for it offered in the last year. 3 of which were ps4 games.

I question if I even need the service anyone given how large my overall back log is.

So, in this case, I dont question it because I haven't really cared that much to begin with. I didn't expect them to up their ps4 offerings, so I wasn't disappointed. They gave a year's notice, and never promised anything, so it's not like people were blindsided by the change. They even sent out emails at different intervals through that year so people could make an informed decision.

gamer78042632d ago

@rainslacker I'm not really concerned with how much it affects a certain individual as much as i am with the value clearly being diminished.

2632d ago
FinalFantasyFanatic2631d ago

When the PS5 comes it will be the PS4 all over again. It will take time to get the caliber of games that most deem worthy and people will complain about it.

milohighclub2632d ago

Unless it's bc then they have a whole gen of ps4 to add instead of 3 yr of indie titles.

Flewid6382632d ago

Sony already said dont even expect to hear anything before 2021.

blackblades2631d ago

I didnt hear that, you got a source

Vasto2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

A sign? LOL

What does it have to do with PS5?

King_Noctis2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

Just an excuse it seems.

Sophisticated_Chap2632d ago

PS Now should have nothing to do with whether PS5 is coming or not. Its a cloud based platform, which should stand on its own merrits.

Muzikguy2631d ago

These articles are lame for sure. I don't have Plus because I've got plenty of games to play and a backlog as it is, but even if I did have the service I'd know that the games are an added bonus. Paying for online e play is what Plus is for. People demanding to be compensated are forgetting that a bonus is just that. Be happy with what you do have. If you don't game online get rid of Plus like I did. No big deal

2631d ago
SheenuTheLegend2631d ago

online multiplayer needs to be free, i dont know, but there needs to be a movement and gamers need to make a voice and make next gen consoles free from memberships.

No excuse not to give 4-6 PS4 games on a monthly basis going forward

Dark_Knightmare22632d ago

Lol we only ever got two ps4 games nothing’s changed. Sony probably looked at the amount of subscribers for PS3 and vita and determined it wasn’t cost effective anymore to offer plus games so deal with it and move on

Visceral892632d ago

Only 4-6 games? Why not free ps now too. They never said they were going to give more PS4 games but I think the quality will be better. Most games go cheap quick these days so just buy the games you want instead of wanting everything for free.

milohighclub2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

Actually free psnow is a good shout. Should drop the free games and just bundle psnow with plus.

I think they need to do something unexpected with it. I think gamepass is gonna put it to shame in the coming years if Sony ain't on the ball..

Mr_Writer852632d ago

@visc

Why would they make Now free for plus subscribers when it makes a profit?

That would be a very odd thing to do.

Saigon2632d ago

@milohighclub

GamePass does not have the amount or I should say quality of games to compete with PSNow. The method MS is using right now won't last. There will be a change in the future, they can't keep that process up. Oh wait, we are talking about the cash cow MS, maybe they can...

However the way GP is implemented is nice and many game companies that implement the streaming service should follow.

Maybe when ps5 comes we will get 2 PS4 and 2 PS5 (probably indie at first) games a month

RosweeSon2632d ago

Xbox don’t offer 4 brand new current Gen games per month tho so why should Sony. Who actually started this whole process off in the first place. Xbox get 4 games normally all rubbish and 2 of which are from last Gen they not 4 current Gen releases. Not to mention there was a time Xbox didn’t offer a single game for months at the start of the Gen but that was alright tho yeah. Sony is offering more than enough. Both games this month easily worth a £10er each that’s pretty much half the yearly cost covered in 1 month and I already got both games. Some people just unrealistic. What you expecting next month spiderman and horizon zero dawn 🤦🏻‍♂️
I’m sure the with PS4 inevitably coming towards end they will start chucking some great games on the service over this year like they did with PS3 when they launched ps+
Wouldn’t surprise me to see things like last of us on ps+ before end of the year or before new one launches.
Even 1 decent £5 indie game a month covers the cost of ps+ for the year so people expecting 4-6 AAA £40/50 games a month are ridiculous

Razzer2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

If you don't mind 4-6 shitty games a month, sure.

zackeroniii2632d ago

2pacalypsenow2632d ago

4-6 Ps4 games a month for $60 year?

Are you insane lol

jznrpg2632d ago

Why not 10 games for free plus a free physical game of your choice each month all for 3 dollars

FallenAngel19842632d ago

@ dark

Why are you advocating for a less consumer friendly practice? Sounds like you’re a corporate slave

@ Vis

Comparing an on demand service to PS+? Really? You lose all credibility with a dumb statement like that

PhoenixUp2632d ago

@ 2pac

Why are you acting like that’s a ridiculous notion? Sony used to give out 6 PS3 games a
month for $50, so 6 PS4 games for $60 isn’t ridiculous in any way unless you’re a corporate slave wants less but will pay more for it.

porkChop2631d ago

Idk about 4-6 games a month, that might be a bit much. But considering the price is still the same, we *should* be getting more value for money. Yes we've been getting a bit better games lately, but I think they could at least give a 3rd game per month. Even if it was a PSVR game, at least that would offer some more value.

Cutting out 2/3 the monthly content while charging the same price just doesn't sit right with me. The only real benefit added was more cloud storage, which really doesn't offset anything.

FallenAngel19842631d ago

@ pork

How are 4-6 games too much? Why would you advocate for less games?

PS3 offered 6 games a month at a time for $50, no reason PS4 can’t do the same for $60.

RosweeSon2632d ago

Thanks to Microsoft who originally just did that charged you to play online. Sega was free for Dreamcast so was Nintendo even Sony was free for years until they introduced charging for it hey Microsoft had done it for near 10 years at least Sony offered something extra other than early access to a demo and being able to play online... but Sony gave full games and ps+ owners at the start know the quality of games was fantastic... why mainly cos it was a new service... even more so because they had a vast back catalogue of games at that point in the generation.

2632d ago
gangsta_red2632d ago

Sony only offered free games because they had a free online option and there was no reason for anyone to actually pay to play online for PS3.

Sony had to dangle some type of fruit to make gamers bite, and that was to offer free games for PS+.

They made it mandatory for PS4 but still kept the offer of free games to not make it extremely obvious it was a sales tactic.

Veneno2632d ago

I cancelled my PS+ as well. Not going to pay the same for less games. I wonder if Sony thought that no one would drop their sub? Or are they banking that people will come back at some point? I'm sure it was someone's job to make the call on this. They must have concluded that it was more of a waste to continue support for the legacy systems than to have to cut loses and lose subs. Hmmmm......

2pacalypsenow2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

"I wonder if Sony thought that no one would drop their sub?"

They did, which Is why the email they sent out gave you instruction on how disable auto renewals.

But it's possible that the cost of getting those PS3/Vita games was higher than the subscription losses. and they said they did that to get higher quality PS4 games.

rainslacker2632d ago

Probably banking on the fact that most people only have it to play online, and most of the remainder probably only have a ps4.

It sucks if you have all the consoles, but the vital offerings haven't been that spectacular for a while, and the ps3 isn't even officially sold by Sony anymore. And chances are, a lot of people already upgraded and aren't fussed anymore

TKCMuzzer2632d ago

I wonder how many people said they are getting less games, yet did NOT download any of the PS3/Vita games. I bet there are quite a few saying they get less for their money, yet have never touched the PS3/Vita games on Plus, so are not losing out, they have just convinced themselves they are.

TKCMuzzer2632d ago

May I ask a serious question? How do you and many others think Sony would be able to fund PSN, keep its security ahead of the game , keep it running 24/7 and continue to create AAA games year in year out if you don't pay a subscription fee?
When will gamers realise, PlayStation is a business, if you want leading market exclusives, a solid/protected network to play on and a decent next gen console Sony need to make money.
Do you moan about paying for cable? your mobile? I mean they literally give you nothing free and your complaining because you only get 2 free games. I wish my cable company would give me two free films a month.

DerekTweed2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

You are absolutely right, however, it is each individuals choice whether they think the service is worth the price.

If they want to play online, they don't really have a choice, other than to play on PC. If they only pay the sub for the monthly games, and they think it's now not worth the price, that's their choice.

RosweeSon2632d ago

I do so I don’t buy ea Ubisoft yearly churn anything Xbox this Gen (as I sold my S After 4 months) not paying for gamepass (they have no exclusives) and certainly not paying for Xbox live just to play online GWG is weak 360 games that I already played being as I had a 360 for 9 years and it was my main console last Gen. And I’ve done all the worthwhile exclusives on Xbox so the stuff they offer is just poor.

chiefJohn1172632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

Critique Sony? *Natural instinct kicks in* Xbox Xbox Xbox bring up Xbox lol. I know Xbox stay in your mind 24/7 but can you stick to the topic at hand? What does dimasok comment have to do with Xbox?

RosweeSon2632d ago

Ps+ pays for itself what’s not to like unless you don’t like games sure they not top notch every month or they maybe something you already have but even 2-3 great games over the year covers the cost of ps+ I barely play online it’s jjst a bonus for me but something that should be free like Dreamcast all previous Nintendo consoles and ps2/3 the free games however are what I’m paying and they more than cover the cost so more than happy to stay a member of ps+ not that I have a choice I bought a couple of years before they chucked the price up. Common sense and all that ;) last I checked 1 top notch decent game costs £40/50 brand new pretty much same price as a year of ps+ so they offer me 1 top notch game a year they’ve covered the cost of me subscribing everything else is a bonus.

milohighclub2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

By the time the game comes to + you can pick it up for a fiver and own it for life. If the games noteworthy dedicated fans will have probably played it. The only good thing about + is you play games you may not have usually played. For me that's the only benefit of the service. Would rather they knock the free games on the head and offer psnow instead. That way everyone has access to the content even if they've missed a month the content is still there. It also boosts content by 600+ games.. Would be great for new ps customers that jump in on ps5 to have access to all those games.

Then if they offer a month free with all new consoles....

MoonConquistador2632d ago

Well look at you with your objective take on this and your judicious use of facts to present a more balanced take on this "controversy". Messages like this have no place on N4G.

Now, who's next in line to stamp their feet shouting "I want, I want, I want" ?

RauLeCreuset2632d ago

RosweeSon

That's pretty much my take on it. I don't like this narrative gaining traction among some that PS+ is only for multiplayer. That's a bad stance to take as consumers. But it does pay for itself. There're the free games, but I've come to value the discounts more. I've even seen them do discounts on live UFC events, but they don't really advertise it.

T2X2632d ago

PS without plus is useless though. Mostly everything is dependent upon online access. Unless you don't play any online games.

rainslacker2632d ago

Only thing reliant on ps+ is paid mp games. Any online features in most games. But all games can be played and updated with a basic free account, even f2p online games.

If one doesn't want online, and can do without the free games, there is no reason to subscribe unless they want the digital discounts.

TKCMuzzer2632d ago (Edited 2632d ago )

Why? I pay for plus, i can't remember the last time I downloaded a PS3/Vita game off plus. I would be a hypocrite to say I'm going to cancel as I now get less games than before even though I NEVER touched those PS3/Vita games.
Unlike you, Sony will have facts on how many people actually download the PS3/Vita games each month. Now I imagine that number is very low which has led to the reason Sony are stopping their support.
If you are a gamer and have not downloaded a PS3/Vita game from Plus in the last 12 months, yet are still moaning they are removing them and you are not getting your moneys worth, you need to have a look at yourself. You are the reason Sony are removing the games, because no one is downloading them.

DerekTweed2631d ago

I will tell you, I didn't download any PS3/Vita games, because I don't own those devices, however I also haven't downloaded any of the PS4 games since Bloodborne.

I let my Sub end in February because I don't play online on the PSN.

But I also haven't been crying on here about this news. This is just my circumstances, every one will be different.

Sony's Bluepoint Closure Should Concern Every PS Studios Fan

Sammy: "Sony disastrously and disgracefully shuttered Texas-based fan favourite Bluepoint yesterday. The long-time PS Studios partner never got a chance to ship a game under its new parent company.

This news hit me particularly hard because I believe it reflects the erosion of once-great PlayStation management that I think we’ve all been feeling for quite some time."

How was this allowed to happen? A studio know for excellent remakes and remasters were put on a GOW live service game? Something nobody wanted? There are so many other, more interesting projects, for me they were the prime studio who should have remastered or remade Bloodborne, what an absolute waste, I'm really annoyed about this.

Hulst should have followed Jim Ryan out the door, especially after his failed concord brainchild, execs really do only fail upwards.

Extermin8or3_94d ago

You say "no body wanted" but we don't actually know if the Devs were the ones to pitch it. For all we know

Elda94d ago

If that was the case you would have thought Sony would have told Bluepoint no & had them make the God Of War trilogy remake instead while having Santa Monica Studios concentrate on the next God Of War & what ever else they're working on. A Bloodborne remake/remaster would have definitely printed Sony millions. It seems the upper management doesn't care what the fans think including them making awful business decisions. To take Bluepoint under their wing for 5 years & dismantle them is crazy work, Sony should have auctioned Bluepoint off to to a company that could really use them.

-Foxtrot94d ago

If the really did pitch it then they would have wanted their own IP for being a brand new game, not using someone else’s IP when it’s not a remake this time.

CrashMania94d ago

I mean I guess, but doubt that a small team of 70 wanted to do a live service game, I don't buy it personally, but we'll never 100% know.

Scissorman94d ago (Edited 94d ago )

i think you are half right. sony became hyper-focused on live service games and given that, studios would then pitch live service games because those projects were the most likely to be greenlit by the higher ups. now, as for what the hell bluepoint was working on since their god of war game was cancelled is beyond me. it's just increasingly frustrating when sony just announced a god of remake which is still in its infancy when bluepoint could have been working on it for years and likely would have shipped it by now.

MDTunkown94d ago

We had a god of war mp in the past and it didn’t do well back then with less competition so doubtful people wanted a live service game especially from devs that made some top tier remakes

Michiel198993d ago

Copium like this is the reason they're in this position. Sony could do no wrong and when something did go wrong, it's never the corporate suits at sony who are to blame.....its either: devs bad or ms/phil spencer bad while their own backyard is on fire. This is the result of not caring what your fav company does just because another company does (way) worse and automatically condoning everything. I hope they can turn it around without having to fuck over their customers more because especially some of the games on ps1 through ps3 were absolutely amazing.

Can't really say im surprised it's gotten to this point although I didn't expect them to close Bluepoint who has always delivered stellar work.

1nsomniac93d ago

The devs didn’t pitch it. It’s already been discussed publicly. They had literally just started on a new undisclosed project they were still in the initial ideas phase when they were asked to stop and do GoW instead.

Extermin8or3_83d ago

Love the downvotes considering it's since become public knowledge that yes bluepoint DID infact pitch the god of war game. They also eventually pitched a Bloodborne remake but from software torpedoed the project, sadly.

neutralgamer199293d ago (Edited 93d ago )

Everyone keeps asking for a Bloodborne remaster or remake — a game that genuinely deserves preservation and modernization. Instead, we got a remake of The Last of Us and then a remaster of The Last of Us Part II, both of which were already recent and widely available. That decision feels tone-deaf. It’s hard not to question priorities when so many legacy titles are untouched.

Bluepoint built its reputation on honoring PlayStation’s history. They were masters at remakes and remasters. There is an entire catalog — from PS1, PS2, and PS3 eras — that fans would celebrate. Yet instead of leveraging that strength, they were redirected toward live service ambitions. Six years later, there’s nothing to show, and now the studio is gone. That’s not just disappointing — it feels like wasted potential.

Sony Bend is another example. Days Gone 2 wasn’t greenlit, and the studio was reportedly shifted toward live service. Years later, that project was canceled, and they’re back at square one. That’s years of development time lost in a generation that already feels light on first-party output.

What’s even more concerning is the broader shift. PlayStation used to thrive on bold, risk-taking single-player projects and strong Japanese creative influence. Now the strategy appears more Western-focused and heavily driven by the live service model — where multiple failures are acceptable as long as one becomes a breakout success.

Competition used to push Sony to take creative risks. The PS3 vs. Xbox 360 era forced innovation. Today, Xbox has shifted direction, Nintendo operates independently in its own lane, and Sony doesn’t feel the same competitive pressure. Without that tension, the urgency to push boundaries seems diminished.

The frustration many fans feel isn’t just about one remake or one canceled project — it’s about a sense that PlayStation’s identity is drifting. And while loyalty is natural, defending every decision without criticism doesn’t help the platform grow.

It’s not anger because we hate PlayStation. It’s frustration because we care about what it used to represent

It does concern me that they think closing amazing studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studios is smart.

I'm honestly surprised Media Molecule is still around. They put out what 1 game in the past 10+ years? I personally wasn't interested in Dreams, so they have been a wash for me since the PS3 era. Are they working on a new game? What are they doing?

Stevonidas94d ago

I immediately recalled when they shut down Japan Studio. I don’t understand why any studio would agree to be acquired by Sony, EA, or Microsoft with their history of studio closures.

Frustrating news, for sure. Hulst is on a major losing streak. Baffling decisions....

Lightning7794d ago

They could of let them do a Remakes of Sly, Jak and Daxter maybe the old Killzone games. Ported Demon Souls to other platforms. Steady revenue for growth becoming a 70 team to 100+ eventually.

toxic-inferno93d ago

Precisely! PlayStation have a rich back catalogue that is screaming out for a talented team like those at Bluepoint to work their magic upon.

Such wasted potential. And a terrible thing to happen to those talented workers at Bluepoint.

Demon's Souls remake was the gateway to FromSoft games for me. I'd fully beaten Bloodborne, but had struggled to get into Dark Souls. Demon's Souls - as a launch title - showed me how these games are meant to be played.

Miacosa94d ago

As a PS Fan and someone that looks to new exsperiences not rehashing old ones I can feel for the devs but it does not move the needle as far as getting new video games.

Sony really wants to erase this PoS from their history LMAO!

BAD MODERATION FROM N4G - fair but humorous and critical comments were hidden with the Spam label being incorrectly used for the cover up.

DarXyde190d ago

It feels more like them being bitter that no one supported it, but maybe it's me.

I'd appreciate them bringing back Warhawk—sadly I don't see that happening.

hombreacabado189d ago

hell yeah bring back warhawk. i thought helldivers 2 would fill that itch but not quite. that to me was the funnest online experience i ever had on playstation. last of us online was also a fun time but warhawk was quite cool made so many friends on that.

DarXyde188d ago

You and me both, mate. I'm totally a single player gamer through and through, but there was something about Warhawk that was absolutely captivating. Could play for hours.

Gamersunite880190d ago

Oh lord. This is hilarious. It's not Nintendo doing it this time. Lol

Lexreborn2190d ago

Did people really think they would let people potentially profit off of what THEY said was trash? It’s actually funny people even tried this

Commentby190d ago

The Sony overlords these people worship

StormSnooper190d ago

You gotta admit it’s weird that anyone out there wants to play it considering we were told it was shit.

Fishy Fingers190d ago

Profit? Hosting community servers would cost the mod team money, not make it :/

StormSnooper190d ago

Yeah, now they like it? Make up your minds people.

jambola190d ago

The people who liked it like it
The people who didn't like it, didn't
They made up their minds, its just different people with different views, I can't believe i have to explain this

InUrFoxHole190d ago

The overwhelming majority of people think its a dumpster 🔥. Even sony can make trash my man. I personally liked it but I also liked the last 2 medal of honors and people didn't like those either

franwex190d ago

Wow. Can’t have it cannibalize sales of the official game, right?!

Why Can’t Sony Make More Multiplayer Hits?

How the PlayStation maker lost—but still survived—gaming’s live-service struggle. The story about Sony's evolving strategy. Playing their strengths.

Because they're bad at it and should stick to their strengths.

-Foxtrot209d ago

Also the market is super oversaturated these days. They’d have no chance unless it’s something that’s grown and nurtured over many years gaining a following, even then it wouldn’t be as big as COD, Fortnite and the like.

I still think if they refined the old school multiplayer “less is more” feeling that Uncharted 2s multiplayer had they could have done something with it these days but they made it too over the top and arcade like in U3 and U4 sadly.

Lightning77208d ago

They were doing it during the PS3 gen just fine though.

Christopher207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

No they weren't. CoD was steam rolling them back then and no one was competing with Halo. People just enjoyed the MP for a little while and moved on pretty quickly. None of them lasted like the competition. None of them.

blacktiger207d ago

Resistance and Killzone says hold my bullet

Christopher207d ago

Halo 2 - 8m+ sold
Halo 3 - 14m+ sold
Halo 4 - 10m sold
Killzone 2 - 2.6m sold
Resistance 2 - 3m sold

You can keep your bullets.

blacktiger207d ago

so now you are comparing lmao, and not to mention Halo is coming to PS5! lmao!!!!!!!

Travesty207d ago

Sale figures = great multiplayer experience
Got it..
Heard it first from here..

That’s the weakest argument. I played Halo and it was great obviously.
But so many different titles had really good online multiplayer.
Resistance Fall of Man. Was a solid title with fun multiplayer.
Killzone 2 was fun. Movement was slower but solid multiplayer.
Warhawk, probably my favorite. It was something different and had a very active community.

List goes on. But since sales = great multiplayer experiences than I don’t know what else to show you besides Call of Duty. 🤷🏼‍♂️

derek206d ago

@Christopher nonsense. Just because they weren't selling the most and/or had the most popular live service games doesn't mean they weren't making good games in the genre. Sony doesn't need to stick to any one type of genre, they have successful live service games in their portfolio. They need to get back to what worked during the ps3 gen so they stand out and stop chasing trends.

stupidusername206d ago

I'm happy we got Helldivers 2. But I believe Sonys biggest mistake was trying to force big single player studios to make multiplayer games based on big single player IPs. It just sounds like a bad idea from the get-go. Why did they need to force great studios like Insomniac, Guerilla, Bluepoint and Naughty Dog to make big live service multiplayer games?

Christopher206d ago (Edited 206d ago )

I think some people don't know what a multiplayer hit is. All of a sudden, number of people playing a game doesn't determine a hit? People need to be honest with reality here. If your competition is selling over 4x as many copies, you're not the hit game. And I didn't even include CoD in this.

MAG
KILLZONE
WARHAWK
SOCOM

all legendary series with very strong multiplayer

willo116207d ago

all great games. I feel the reason they keep failing is because they have abandoned pretty much most the franchises that made them who they are.

If they had made a new SOCOM, Killzone or MAG years ago they could have had a a strong set of multiplayer games but instead focused and making games like Concord that no one asked for a crowd that was never really there.

Yui_Suzumiya206d ago

MAG was pretty fun. Always wanted a sequel though.

Lightning77207d ago

Yeah they were. Killzone, Starhawk, Uncharted 2, 3 LBP2 resistance 3. Plus more.

Tapani206d ago

Because they are trying too hard.

dveio209d ago

They can.

But don't combine it with their strengths.

HD2 has identity. I don't think Concord had. And Marathon seemed lacking it, too.

Goodguy01209d ago (Edited 209d ago )

Dear god back when sony made highly underrated ones though. Socom, MAG, factions, uncharted 2 MP, resistance, warhawk, twisted metal, killzone 2+3....

I really wonder where they went wrong? The ps3 generation was amazing. It's just too bad cod and halo overtook the mp scene and these were all people played.

MIDGETonSTILTS17207d ago

Idk why MAG wasn’t bigger. And LoU mp was too good to not be expanded upon successfully. People STILL play it.

Kaizin514206d ago

Too early for its time. 256 players is cool and fun and has a lot of potential but it was hindered by the PS3 at the time, like many games were. Not saying it was bad, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I just don't think the market was there for it. Bugs and stability were also a huge problem for it too, it felt like it lacked polish.

Sadly, it didn't do much to help Zipper Interactive. Instead of MAG, they should have put more resources and better ideas into making SOCOM 4 a proper SOCOM game instead of what we ended up getting. Sony has always had issues delivering on long form multiplayer series. Killzone was good, Resistance was good, SOCOM was great imo, but none of those titles lasted past their respective generations, especially when you have things like COD taking the reigns on the console shooter market.

I would have personally loved to have another SOCOM (and still do) but in my heart, I know Sony will never do it. COD has such a hold on what people "expect" out of a shooter on consoles that when something comes out, it will be compared to COD. Hell, even Battlefield 6 is the best BF game we have had in a long while (opinion, I know many will disagree) but it is still compared to COD in many many aspects.

Wish Sony would do more with many many series out there, but instead we get reboots, "remakes", and stuff like Concord which was just a tone deaf game to begin with, nobody wanted it.

Redgrave207d ago

They started trying to replicate fortnite money

Miraak82 207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

My favorite console gen , people tend to forget the SOE existed and had DCUO ,Everquest, SWG and Planetside . They were doing live service before live service was a thing . I played and was subbed to DCUO for like 5 years before SOE was sold off and the game kinda fell off for me , it was and is one of the funnest games I've ever played and experienced though , still always in the top downloads list on PSN . To say they're only good at single player games is silly as games like KZ , Warhawk and LittleBigPlanet had an active playerbase until they just killed the servers

jznrpg207d ago

I loved Everquest. Sony bought Verant after EQ launched and was already successful then resold it later but Somy did a good job while they owned it

Terry_B207d ago

There are thousands of good multiplayer games out there already.

Shadow Man207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

Sony could have struck gold if they never canceled the last of us 2 multiplayer, instead they wasted Billions of dollars on Concord.

Towers206d ago

I'm surprised with the downvotes. MP TLOU2 would have been amazing. The best part from TLOU2 was the combat and animation. An expanded version of the first MP would have been great. Unfortunately they got in the Destiny guys to look over it and then it got cancelled. Then put a lot of money into Concord...
