As nice as PSP(still got it) and Vitas are , no. It's time to move on and make VR grow. Portables will be taken over by mobile phones with AR and VR soon enough. Nintendo knows this as they made a hybrid system. If you look at Nintendo's sales:

Gameboy (119 million)
Gameboy Advance (82 million)
Nintendo DS (154 million)
Nintendo 3DS (75 million as of December)

The portable market will not be sustainable as phones get more powerful. Nintendo DS was a highlight. But they won't hit 154 million with 3DS. They won't hit that number with Nintendo Switch. Mobile will take over for casuals. "Why buy a child a portable when phones do more and play FREE or cheap games" is what parents are going to say. And when AR and VR are added, portable systems will be on their last legs. Except for nostalgia. Just like GPS, MP3 players, cameras, calculators, laptops, portable TVs, etc, portable game systems will eventually go. If it's not a hybrid like a phone is, watch as sales decline.

Now, it would be cool if Sony made a hybrid handheld portable that can be placed in a Stand Alone Headset for VR. As Sony has made supposedly a 4K phone screen.

A portable that you can play on the go, plug to a TV and use for VR with a clear screen would be cool. And compete with Oculus Quest. If you could pair it with PS5 and play those VR games wirelessly or tether it? Even cooler.

But that's all wishful thinking. It's not going to happen. Nintendo will hold out for a bit but it won't last. Sony is done. Just like Sega, NEC and SNK, N Gage and everyone else. Just stick with PS5 and VR support is my opinion on what Sony should do.

As Vita if they do one like the Vita bigger better (power wise, not actual size) but do like they did with PSP and Make sure all their big hitting franchises get a vita2 release preferably an exclusive Vita had Uncharted killzone etc great and it did have god of war and metal gear solid collections but both just ports of the ps2 games.
PSP had MGS peace walker made exclusively (at the time) for it same with gran turismo had a PSP version god of war had 2 PSP entries gta had 2 entries burnout Tony hawks all the big PlayStation games were on there Vita got some great games but the big guns were MIA.

The Vita is one of worst consoles ever made in terms of its library and support. So no, nobody trusts Sony to make another handheld.

I think that there is a market for handhelds as proven by the Switch. Sony with the PS Vita was so close to getting it right.. literally they were a L2 / R2 buttons and SD Card slot away from getting it 100% right. The only issue is that people don't want to buy the same game twice.. one for the handheld, and one for the console - this is the biggest issue I think Sony would need to overcome. I think that Sony needs to find a away to make all of this games cross-buy between the handheld and the console in order to have success.

It would be great to have another handheld But Sony way over engineered the orig psp it should have been a handheld ps1 with some smoothing, would have had the most games and the unit price would be dirt cheap.

Same for the vita instead of a ps3 type graphics device it should have been a handheld ps2 for the same reasons listed above.

I would love it if they tried again as long as it had physical media. I love my Vita and PSP. I even still on occasion play PocketStation. I also ask for standard micro SD cards.

Possibly interested if it had a dock for the PS4/ps5 remote to sit in. They made some adapters that I saw where you could put a phone in and play the games using a normal controller. They could make a vita style dock for portability and the controller dock for sitting on the couch when the tv is occupied.

It's not ideal for most but if the controller buttons become worn out broken simply replace the controller. That would make me use it more. The handhelds were never friendly with larger adult hands. This would solve that problem.

Why not just make a new PlayStation phone? With the mobile specs out there they could make a beast capable of running anything. And if it's going to be a premium device, if you make it a phone then it will give people an incentive to own it. Imagine native PS gaming on the go, all while making phone calls.

Anyone saying "focus on PS5" probably doesn't understand that in order for Sony to maintain their global presence, they absolutely should make another handheld. There is a reason Switch is killing it in Japan. They've successfully eliminated the either/ or from the equation at a sensible price.

If Sony offered a PSVR mini to take advantage of a handheld, I think that could do swimmingly. They make great handhelds, they just need to support them better and keep the Japanese gamer in mind.

No. Sony can not compete with Nintendo in this market. It’s been proven twice already. PSP only lasted as long as it did thanks to modding. Vita was a good system but Sony gave up on it while it was still on the market.

Nope it would just be another hand held with Spin Off games. One of the main points of the Switch success is playing the games you would normally only play at home on the Go. If Sony & Microsoft does not adapt this same philosophy for any hand helds they might wanna do they better not bother. If Sony wants me buying a hand held I wanna play my Digital PS4 Library on it & Im not alone

I would kill for something to provide switch like functionality for my PS4/PS5. I've been waiting for years for remote play to function well but it never has.

I loved the Vita. I would buy a Vita style device from Sony again BUT, only if they don’t force me to buy a pricey proprietary memory solution. The Vita was primarily a digital download based device and those limited capacity high cost cards are the main thing that killed the platform off in the end IMO. It certainly want for lack of awesome games. Sony should have stuck with it a bit longer with 1st party games too, and backing out in large scale games so early on started the slide. The PSP was a huge success, so it’s certainly possible for Sony to do it again.

I love my Vita, but there's only one way that a new Sony handheld would work:

Make EVERY PS5 game compatible and Cross Buy but with the graphics scaled in the same way that PS4 and PS4 Pro does. The full experience is on PS5 and a stripped back version on PSP3.

That way, you tick all the boxes:
- software support
- on the move playing
- home/mobile hybrid

I hope they release a new handheld that connects to PS5 through remote play and possibly a controller for VR and PS5 and other with PSVR2 and PS5 . They need to have it use standard memory cards or/and have built in hard drive . I love my Vita and I hope they make the few changes necessary to make a Vita2 or whatever name they use successful . There is room in the handheld market there is no reason to let Nintendo have it to themselves . Sony has enough IP and 3rd party support to be able to compete and do wel if they make the right choices

People need to get things straight. Vita was praised before released, super hyped up by all. Pricing was correct, memory cards were quite expensive but get a big enough one, you only needed one - Sony should of gone with at least 4-6 gb internal memory biggest fault by Sony. The cards themselves AWESOME, it kept the Homebrew at bay for ages.

Nintendo even had to drop the price of the 3DS to match the Vita / even the 3DS wasn't selling that well at launch, that did change of course.

Sony had an amazing launch lineup for the Vita, arguably better than any other PS platform & even others. It had quite a bit of support by Developers before launch, but not full on support - say SE in others didn't releases games for a long time for the Vita. Sony had awesome support for the Vita at launch.

Vita launched, it didn't sell. For the hardware for what you got it was still a better price than 3DS EQUAL if you add in a decent GB memory card. Quickly developers cut back their plans for the Vita as 3DS with its price cut before Vita launched started to take off. Games like CoD, which should of easily been CoD:MW1 ported, cut back a few gfx, cut frame rate in half to 30fps, we got a poor as game. Bioshock was quickly canceled after seeing the VIta's launch sales.

Sony kept up support for the Vita but also couldn't handle pumping out AAA titles for the Vita which games costed say twice as much to make or more than Nintendo's titles which were basically still stuck in the past. Still we got GREAT support by Sony with Freedom Wars, Gravity Rush, Boarderlands 2, Killzone & others.

VITA died because YOU didn't buy it, not because of Sony. If it got the sales at launch that it needed to attract 3rd party developers to invest we would of got games like the Switch is ONLY been getting because of good launch sales. Vita is awesome, just didn't get the sales it required.

Switch is awesome, congrats Nintendo for entering the HD era. The Vita with a HDMI output could of been released along side the Switch & look like a good competitor. Even SE after years of the Vita on the market FINALLY saw some potiental & released FFX-X-2 for the Vita alongside the PS3 version, a bit too late I say.. But if only the Vita actually sold during its launch period we would of seen a completely different beast.

So yes, Sony stuffed up by having zero internal memory for storage but that is all. The customers spoke & developers followed suit. Sony tried but couldn't keep pumping out AAA titles with poor sales, overall they did turn things around to create a hardcore following which BOUGHT GAMES! That attracted small developers to pump out games for the Vita.

I don't think they will do it. The PSP did fairly well, but got hacked too early. IIRC the SD cards were part of how it was so easily hacked, hemce Sony's decision to go proprietary for the Vita. They should have called it PSP2, They should have charged half the price they did for the memory cards and they should have done what Nintendo did with the 3DS - cut the RRP when they realised it wasn't selling. Do whatever it takes to get the sales in early lifecycle, or 3rd party support dies, and Sony gave up long before they should have. They ruined the marketing which confused consumers, and they were nowhere near aggressive enough with their advertising campaigns either. I read a report that a lot of casuals thought it was just another variant of the PSP. Marketing it as an expensive remote play device was also a huge mistake IMHO.

No, they do not. I would love it if they took another shot at a handheld instead of just writing them off after the Vita, but only if they plan on supporting it and make the right decisions with it. There's potential for Sony in the handheld market, but they can only succeed with one if they're willing to put in the time, effort and resources needed to make it happen. They should also use a common memory card format next time.

I prefer all developers make games for the systems I use so I have more selection and hopefully a better selection of games.

Psp for me is still the best handheld ever made. When u think of all the fantastic exclusives that console had.

It's simple what Sony should do. Release a cheap handheld with no internals in it. That means all the power comes from the ps5. Then it casts to the device like the wii u. That way u get a handheld that can be sold for really cheap that plays ps5 games.

Bar Japan the switch gets used little outside. most gaming Is done in the house, on sofa, in bed, on the toilet. The tech, as in the quality and range would have to be better than the wii u though. If they done that it would sell like crazy.

It doesn't matter. They have to include handheld gaming business into their own WWS global strategy before doing anything on it.

Sony's freedom is the biggest enemy for their handheld business. Obviously, no star developers in WWS want to waste their resources to the handheld, with knowing that their next PS4 game would take a center stage of gaming society and be a sure hit for next GOTY list. If Sony's management doesn't want to force some of them to play the side-role, they'd better off from the side-business.

When the vita was released there was a lot of competition from the mobile space the graphics in phones had been evolving at a impressive pace with titles like Infinity Blade pushing it further and further.

The general feeling was that the vita would be quickly replaced and I feel like that caused a lot of developers to ignore it.

The truth of course was that mobile devices hit a ceiling and devs found it was best to push micro transactions meaning that fully fledged console games never quite made it onto the Play store outside of some re releases like vice city.

I think the vita was a victim of it's time combined with the absurd cost of memory cards it struggled to gain a foothold in the market like the PSP and 3ds already had because why would you buy a $200 system with a memory card that cost another $80 and games that cost again $60 when the app store had you covered for $0.99 a game.

Had it released today with more powerful specs it would see a greater level of success like the switch mobile phone gaming is stagnant outside of kids addicted to Minecraft the switch would be the only real competition

I think they can forget about handhelds... they combat piracy by putting their own storage media instead of micro sd card, their poor marketing at vita. They've given up on vita the moment it flops the first year. Nintendo 3DS was flopped the first time, but they cut the price, change their marketing strategy, and survived.

It would be nice to have a new Portable PlayStation as an optional device, though in the current climate I think it would only work as a potential model of hardware that can play current games.

If PS5 is a 4K machine, then a 720p portable device that can run the games that come to it's bigger cousin would make sense and expand the potential audience for PlayStation/Sony, without Sony or 3rd party Devs having to divide resources to make Portable exclusives for the handheld.

Given the leaks for AMD's new APUs, I think it's pretty easy for Sony to make a modern portable device that's very efficient and capable of running next gen games at lower resolutions than the home console system.

I'd only want another PS handheld if Sony supports it more. The Vita is a fantastic piece of hardware and I regularly use it as a portable PS1. However, Sony didn't do enough to encourage third party devs to make games for it, they dropped first party support and kept accessories like memory cards priced high.

yes it does and it needs to do what they say it can. Im sure there was talk the vita could run PS3 Games..... Sooo... Where were all the PS3 games it should have released at least as remasters. Give me a VITA PS4 mini with a bunch of games I can play on the go that have been released for the PS4 and the thing will sell like nothing else. Just dont make it as expensive as a console like a Switch cause we now already have that.

The vita is still arguably the most capable gaming handheld ever made. It's library is a legacy gamers dream and it was still getting great indies through its life cycle...
