I think Sony is better suited focusing on what they are really good at.

Xb1ps42559d ago

Good God no! They make amazing handhelds but dont support them as well as they do the consoles

tar_tar072559d ago

Truth. Say what u want but at least Nintendo supports thier craft.

Eonjay2559d ago

Spoiler alert: they are making a new handheld.

Razmiran2558d ago

Then they are not really good at it

fei-hung2558d ago

I think they supported the device enough but the fans didn't buy into it. Think of the games they released to support the device:

1) uncharted golden abyss
2) tearaway
3) escape plan
4) gravity rush
5) resistance
6) kill one mercenaries
7) PASBR
8) Soul Sacrifice
9) unit 13
10) wipeout
11) everybodys golf

There were many other great games as well as it being perfect for playing ps1 Classics that sony was handing out for free including the crazy trilogy.

It was bad timing for Sony. Had they released it a few years after the ps4, with the same level of support, it would have been very different.

Seraphim2558d ago

that's just it. The PSP and Vita in their own right are excellent handhelds. However the support & long term commitment was never there on either. I'd say let sleeping dogs lie.

Now if they could provide a handheld that complimented their console. Something you could play digital games on both w/o remote play; or w/ or w/o it. Perhaps there would be a market to make it worth while. At least gamers would know that there won't be a lack of games they can use with it. But a new standalone handheld with remote play? Nah. A lot of us will know better. It seems the only reason Vita has been so good is the Japanese support and gamers who enjoy Vita because of those games.

Chocoburger2558d ago

@tar_tar07

Because Nintendo supported the Wii U?

Shiken2558d ago

@chocoburger

Far better than Sony supported the VITA. At least it had first party games put on it after two years. WiiU even got BotW, which was GotY 2017, so bad comparison. The WiiU had a 3rd party problem, not a 1st party one.

TK-662558d ago (Edited 2558d ago )

@chocoburger

Yeah they did. Name the top tier Sony games on the Vita and when they came out. You'll see that Nintendo was far better in both quantity and quality of releases for the Wii U when you look at what they released.

Army_of_Darkness2558d ago

Sony just needs to make a handheld with the ability to play and download games from the android playstore while still dedicating themselves to making exclusive games, plus 3rd party support of course... Sony has the potential to be on top in the handheld department but they ain't really trying Imo.

@Eonjay: spoiler alert: lol.

Everybody seems to forget the wii u flopped this gen?Then nintendo brought out the switch.....So why cant sony have another go?

Neonridr2557d ago

because if the Vita taught them anything, it's that they have no clue what a handheld gamer actually wants. The 3DS destroyed it and was a vastly inferior device in all aspects. The Switch is a Vita on steroids. Sony would be put into a tough place where they would have to release something that is superior or at least equal to the Switch and then also put out a new console. Then their devs have to stretch themselves putting out games. The Vita was anemic when it came to 1st party support and the only reason it isn't buried is because some Japanese and indie devs still release the odd game here and there.

That's a lot of money to invest in a market that the Switch already has a 35 million unit head start. Not to mention that clearly the Switch model is what we should expect from Nintendo moving forward.

AshleeEmerson2558d ago

It's such a shame what has become of your life, to where commas" are forgotten.

Damn you Thundercat "Rooooar"

I personally would like a third handheld system from Sony, just this time have a built in hard drive, with the option of a micro SD card, L2, R2, L3 & R3, then the system would be great.

RosweeSon2559d ago

I’d take a new handheld still not sold on VR personally.

FlintGREY2559d ago

I have a VR and I can honestly say I only played it once. Waste of money

Ricegum2559d ago

Why have you only played it once?

mcstorm2558d ago

@RosweeSon I'm with you on that but then again if they do bring out a new handheld I won't be getting it day one like I did with the PSV after the shocking support it got.

2558d ago
RosweeSon2558d ago

Fair play mcstorm I didn’t get Vita day1 most unlike me as GameCube/ps2/3/4 Wii/wii u, 3ds switch all day1. Ps2 was week2 due to stock issues and 360 I got within a month again was hard to track down and I never pre ordered but I love a new console launch day however didn’t get an Xbox one til s arrived sold 4 months later.... and more to the point Vita I didn’t get for a year or so just before they were changing the screens I got one with the original screen as heard it was crisper and was very happy got a 32gb memory card wasn’t the cheapest but was not much more than £40/60 max compared to £80 some places wanted plus the month I got mine ps+ gave away Uncharted and gravity rush which was pretty standard (they were both on ps+ for a few months) but also street fighter vs Tekken and Katamari were also free so 4 top games paid for my memory card in my eyes and nearly the console lol made do with the free games and ps1 classics bought a few of the big games still got it now. Sometimes it can pay to wait it out even a few months

Honestly the Vita was a great system but it just didn't get the sales it needed for continuous support. I feel like the same thing would happen if they tried again, it probably couldn't compete with the switch at this point.

DarkZane2559d ago

It likely wouldn't if they used SD cards or micro SD cards for storage, but knowing Sony, they would try with overpriced proprietary memory cards again and it was the main reason the vita failed.

TheFirstClassic2559d ago

The memory cards were a problem but I think their impact has been exaggerated. If lots of people really wanted a vita, I don't think the memory cards would have dissuaded them.

rainslacker2558d ago

I don't think it was so much that they were proprietary, it's that they were overly expensive, and until the redesign it was a compulsory purchase because it was required to actually operate the system.

Profchaos2558d ago

Technology has improved in the two years since the switch of they are capable of running close to ps4 games on the fly and even better if you can play your digital ps4 titles on the go it would sell incredibly well

So an actual portable Playstation. The Switch pretty much perfected the mobile console by making it a hybrid system. It's going to be difficult for Sony to be able to compete with that. It's doable IMO, but difficult.

Dom_Estos2558d ago

FlintGREY

Aye, sure you have.

agent45322558d ago

Smartphones have beaten handhelds already. The best part of smartphones; Android OS is the release of Blast which you get paid 0.25 cents, $1.00 for.completing missions. Make money while playing games.

ScootaKuH2558d ago

And maybe they could actually, you know, support it this time?

FinalFantasyFanatic2558d ago

I just don't want them to make the same mistake with the SD cards like they did with the Vita's proprietary cards, even now, I can't get a decent size for a reasonable price.
