Why Nintendo keeps returning to classics like Pokémon

Nintendo just unveiled its two new Pokémon games and new characters on its Switch console. What does the move indicate for the 129-year-old company?

franwex2634d ago

It’s guaranteed to make a ton of money so...

Xaevi2634d ago

How can they be returning to something they've never stopped making?

Benjaminkno2634d ago

I’m not a big Pokémon fan, but they act like there’s new ones every year.

Why does anyone make games that are popular?

Monotonous

"but they act like there’s new ones every year."

???

Black & White - 2010
Black 2 & White 2 - 2012
X & Y - 2013
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire - 2014
Pokken & Super Mystery Dungeon - 2015
Sun & Moon - 2016
Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon - 2017
Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee - 2018
Shield & Sword - 2019

and these are just some that I can think of. just look at this list:

there is literally not 1 but several Pokemon games a year since 1998. the only year since Pokemon launch in 1996 which had no game was 1997.

Thanks for the info!

So ~126 games (not counting Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokéland, but including games where Pokémons just a side character, like Smash Bros.) over 23 years (from 1996 to 2019) = ~5.4 games a year (some years had no games, some had 7+, like 2002). Just wow.

And yet they don't bother with anything that's not Kirby, Mario, Zelda or Pokemon... I wouldn't mind a new Mother, F-Zero maybe even an ice climbers game

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
