I think Microsoft is moving away from consoles but not fully, I think they'll have gamepass on Switch and even PlayStation eventually plus Project X cloud will be everywhere. Smart tvs, PCs, Phones, all consoles..
There will still be an Xbox but I think they'll eventually aim for high end. A bit like the Surface range of computers..

Spurg2621d ago

What makes you think Gamepass will come on Playstation? Sony doesn't even allow cross-play with Xbox and Switch, you think they will allow something like Gamepass on PlayStation. Sony has their own service psnow and having a Gamepass will defeat the purpose of it.
I personally think that a partnership is in place with Nintendo and Microsoft which will also allow Nintendo to also publish games on gamepass.

rob-GP2621d ago

why would Nintendo want to put games on GamePass? The developers get pennies for titles which are on there and Nintneod titles sell, they keep their price for years after release, unlike most other publisher's titles. Also, If any Nintendo games were on GP (which they won't, but let's say IF), they would have to be streamed as they won't run natively on the Xbox platform - this is another reason it won't ever happen as GP sells itself as only downloadable titles and if you could get Nintendo games to run better than on the switch, why would you buy a switch?

Nintendo aren't stupid

if MS doesn't sell Hardware in the future what competition does Sony have to worry about?

The biggest issue for Sony and ms is not like ms/sony and Nintendo Sony and MS compete for the exact same market and target audience and Nintendo does not.

starchild2621d ago

There's no indication they are moving away from consoles. They're expanding in order to reach more gamers but that doesn't mean they are abandoning consoles. That would defeat the purpose. Why would they expand their reach in certain areas only to massively reduce their reach in one of their two main areas? (That being consoles.)

They want to reach as many gamers as possible and while they might reach some console gamers through partnerships with Nintendo (I say "might" because even this is still uncertain) they know they need to have console hardware to reach the tens of millions of gamers that prefer to game on consoles.

This idea that Microsoft is just going to abandon all the work they've done to establish themselves in the console space is nothing but wishful thinking on the part of some people. It makes no logical sense.

Zerobalance2620d ago

Finally someone with some sense. Good for you. M/S can't grow, if at the same time they sink or stop console. Their are a lot for Sony/ pc fanboys who want Xbox to just disappear.

Almightsponge2620d ago (Edited 2620d ago )

Considering like 40% of MS revenue these days is from cloud services it's not hard to imagine they like the look of a cloud focused future. Having ms game pass via cloud service on other consoles isnt that much of a stretch. Sony get the benifit of one less cosole competitor aswell as their customers being able to play "exclusives" on there console if they wish. Same goes for nintendo, main thing holding it back is net speeds. I think they would love being able to rake in monthly sub fees for providing a service rather than spending money on r&d for consumer hardware. But who knows
Edit. Maintaining their own cosole with basic streaming and cloud functions as a stepping stone i could see after their next console (which will definitely be a traditional comsole)

Zenbaby3692620d ago

If MS moves away from consoles what do they even have? Their exclusives are pretty laughable compared to the competition. So they would be leaving themselves vulnerable to someone doing a better "game pass". It's almost funny at this point because the xbox name is what's selling the console more than anything it seems, the only thing the xbox has going for it is..the console itself. Oh and the controller is legit too. Anyway, we know they aren't moving away from consoles, no one is. America doesn't have good enough infrastructure for it. We need consoles because our internet is pretty garbage outside of big cities, relatively speaking. We've been hearing about how amazing this "cloud" stuff is for a long time. I just can't imagine playing a shooter with the kind of latency the vast majority of people would have. But, if game pass is available on anything, there's zero reason to buy xbox, and then they have no console and end up on very thin ice..I just think it's a bad move.

Zerobalance2620d ago (Edited 2620d ago )

Dimwitted reason. There are plenty of reasons to own an Xbox. I have an Xbox a Pc & a PS4. If l want something l will buy it. Xbox is good at 4K great to play RDR 2 or Forza, Cities Skylines or what ever. Game Pass is not for me as l want to own my games. Xbox Live is great but l won't pay for PSN god it is so slow.

Bronxs152620d ago (Edited 2620d ago )

I don’t think they are moving away from
Consoles. Console is the core that all this is built around and built upon. If anything they have more focus on console now considering the bang up job they did on the one x and the rumoured anaconda specs that is expected to come out BEFORE ps5 and still be MORE powerful.

If they never had a console there would be no Xbox brand. A console is the core of Xbox. Heck box is in the name. All what they are doing is adding on and building onto the Xbox brand with these new services and features. And making it more future proof. If anything they see what’s coming from other giants like google and amazon and are preparing to make sure that Xbox doesn’t go away by investing in the kinds of cloud and streaming technologies that will be able to keep an affront to google and amazon.

They even renamed Microsoft gsme studios to Xbox gsme studios. To me this means Microsoft just wants to make great games and have a platform for great games. What good are these amazing games if you don’t have a way to experience them. They’ve said very clearly the goal of a Xbox console is to provide the best place to play games. That’s succeeded with the one x. They want you to get an Xbox so you can experience the game creators game and vision the way it was intended at the best fidelity. If however that’s not your thing, they won’t make it a barrier. They want you to be wowed with the experience on an Xbox. But if you really don’t want a Xbox they won’t make it a barrier for you. Maybe you can only afford one system and you already have a switch. No sense missing out those games better to play at lower fidelity on switch than to not play at all.

Also for those who fear it will make Xbox irrelevant it will probably make Xbox more relevant than other because it will be in more places on more platforms. More people will know about halo for example. Imagine it has more a chance to become a cultural phenomenon like say a fortnite with more millions of people playing the game. Before only Xbox owners could play halo and talk about it or share the experience. But imagine if all switched owners were part of the conversation now. Or many more users on pc. More chance of Xbox franchise being relevant and part of pop culture.

rainslacker2620d ago

XBox is a name. The console is part of that name. At least now. That is the direction MS is going. They will keep the console around for at least a while, maybe forever, but XBox isn't the console anymore,

and Sony will just stay in the past making traditional AAA new ip's.
i never realized just how good Detroit would be but i must say i am blown away by the story and the set pieces.
this would never happen if it was released at launch on PS Now.

A - AA games can be good, but not at the expense of AAA games. right MS?..... MS?..... anyone there?

PhoenixUp2621d ago

This was most likely Microsoft’s original goal when they entered the console market

Phoenix762621d ago

Indeed it was/is. Many years ago they tried to dabble with this idea. It was called Game for Windows Live. And it failed... hard.

ApocalypseShadow2621d ago (Edited 2621d ago )

Yes sir. Jump in- Embrace
Take the next step- Extend
Then try to dominate-Extinguish

They've never changed. Just suckered a few individuals along the way who don't know Microsoft well. Using the Xbox fan base as a Trojan Horse to only dump them eventually. Like using HD DVD only to dump it as they only used it to slow up Blu-ray adoption while pushing digital.

This Gen, Microsoft sees that the TRUE core Xbox fan base is not enough to survive on and are going back to PC for support and looking for casuals to support them again like kinect with streaming services.

We all know Microsoft's main goal is to create something that they can monopolize, then sit back and do nothing while getting reoccurring annual revenue. Just update software and demand full control and use it as a negotiating tool against partners, retail, hardware manufacturers, etc.

Sad part is that there is a group of people that don't see it coming. My only question is will they try and dump XBL back on PC eventually as we know they don't like giving things out for free. Just look at F2P games behind a paywall.

darthv722620d ago

you make that sound like a bad thing. Just accept, adhere and assimilate.

AmUnRa2620d ago

Yeah your right, just read: "Criticism of Microsoft on Wikepedia" .
Thats the real face of Microsoft and how they work....

ApocalypseShadow2620d ago (Edited 2620d ago )

Yes. That is their main goal. Wiki or not doesn't change the fact that the Department of Justice came after them for it. Does the Economist help?
https://www.google.com/amp/...

Did you want to read the pdf of the lawsuit? Just look it up. That's not tin foil. That's facts that Xbox fans don't seem to comprehend. Which is facts.

Microsoft will try to make their software the standard again on PC. All these rumors about Microsoft services on Nintendo Switch is to eventually control Nintendo's online. They already use their strong arm tactics on PC hardware manufactures with windows. Xbox is only a means to an end. And you're being used to get there.

But what do I know compared to you guys. You're the same people that believed in kinect, 3 times the power, esram, dx12,cloud power, hidden processors, one x and high fidelity vr, crackdown destruction, etc.

Someone tells you exactly how Microsoft works and you continue to be as foolish as ever.

Darth, sitting back and doing nothing hoping 3rd parties will prop them up is why they are being decimated this Gen by Sony. And as usual, you're hoping and waiting until next time.

Soulrakk2620d ago (Edited 2620d ago )

"Not enough", yet they're still making record profits from gaming. They have never said they're going away from consoles, all indications have actually proven otherwise, including them stating so multiple times.

1. They created the XB1X when they didn't have to. Took back the power game.
2. They've already boldly stated they'll continue to be the powerful console next gen. Again, they don't have to under this approach.

Sounds like they're doubling down across all fronts. Not going away from anything. Service branding is the future. That's pretty clear by now in all media. And that's where they're going. Sony is doing the same shit. Just not as elaborate because they're back end isn't close to the infrastructure of Microsoft. One thing is clear in all this, they're going after EVERYONE. Continue to play where you want.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio1d 11h ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing1d 9h ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster921d 9h ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit1d 9h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing1d 9h ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster921d 7h ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Tanktopmaster921d 7h ago

Let me be clear. This is sarcasm
