Why I Still Recommend 'Anthem,' Despite This Disastrous Launch Window

Anthem has a ton of issues, but if you're a fan of the loot shooter genre, there is a lot to like and a lot of potential for the future, in any case.

LordoftheCritics2658d ago

I wouldn't recommend it at all.

This sums up how I feel about it too.

Cracked and (don't kill me!) bought Anthem yesterday and, instead of it completely devouring my soul like a lot of the online comments and reviews told me it would I'm actually enjoying it! The action is very fluid and gives you a lot of freedom and I quite like strolling around the fort afterwards talking to the various characters. The infamous loading times are nowhere near as bad as has been made out, on PS4 anyway. I really don't get the criticism having played it now.
I'm not the type of gamer who can put 80+ hours into a game a week so it will be a while before I will exhaust the starter content and when I do there will probably be more content released anyway. All in all I'm glad I got off the fence, the only fault I've had so far was one disconnect right at the end of a mission but I'm pretty sure that's the norm for an online game like this in it's release week. And I didn't lose my progress (experience, loot) anyway so it didn't make any difference anyway.
For anyone on the fence who was looking forward to Anthem but got turned off by the online rage against it I would definitely recommend picking it up, it's nowhere near as bad as it's been made out to be.

i think everyone is so used to bashing any game with EA in it. That they are just here to bash instead of giving the game a fair chance. Been playing it for two days and i have lots of fun with it. yeah i have encountered a few bugs but nothing game breaking as of yet. However with Division 2 releasing next month right along side where content update come out for Anthem, i will be jumping back and forth. Plus with all the hate towards and how many reviews are done just based on " I hate EA". Its hard to find a unbiased review that is based on the gameplay.

rpvenom2658d ago

Same. All my friends bailed on their preorders and i was the only one still going forward with the game.. ive now pumped approx. 10 hrs and i can say to me it was worth it.. this game truly doesnt deserve the bad press its getting.. yes EA is a piece of sh!t company but this game is one of very very few that is actually good. Graphics are amazing and gameplay is fun. During my ten hrs of play.. i had one disconnect and with respects to loading.. it hasnt been enough for me to get annoyed with.. maybe its cause of the updates and im in ps4 pro.. either way im having fun.. and thats coming from a pretty hard critic towards games like this

DaveZero2658d ago

Pump 100s of hours in like people religiously do with other game then I may consider what you and others said, untill then what I've seen no thank you and for many reasons.

TricksterArrow2658d ago

To be fair, most reviews are average, not really bad.

starchild2658d ago

Interesting comment. I've been watching gameplay, reading comments like yours and hearing positive impressions from a few friends and I'm fairly decided that I'll get it. Probably not for a couple weeks, but I'll get it relatively soon.

I've seen how hype wagons and hate wagons can result in games getting higher or lower scores than they otherwise would have. It has happened many times. In the case of Anthem, people were hating on it long before anyone had played it or knew enough to really have any kind of opinion on it at all. That told me to be very skeptical of taking reviews at face value. But I've watched enough gameplay, read between the lines of enough reviews, and had a few people that I trust tell me it's actually a pretty enjoyable game so I'm fairly confident it will be something I will enjoy.

thesoftware7302658d ago

@Old

I agree 100%..I'm lvl 24 and loving it.
I honestly think that the majority of the people talking smack on here are going by the reviews and didnt even try the demos, and while i understand basing purchases off of reviewers, it hardly warrants the "the game is Trash" comments.

The game is a fun game that needs improvement, just like every other Gass and so far each week seem like they are working to make it better, the load times dont bother me at all as it seems they have been greatly improved. They also announced a 90day road map..cant wait.

Elwenil2658d ago

Anthem isn't as bad as what people are making it out to be. Yes, it has some issues, but it's fun to play and not "broken" as some people claim. If you like Destiny, you will most likely like Anthem. No, I'm not an EA shill or paid by them, this is just my honest opinion after 30+ hours playing on PS4. I personally think it's probably a 75/100 if I had to give it a rating. Yes it's published by EA and that is a valid reason for some to not like it, but judged on the merits of the game, it's not nearly as bad as many reviewers are making it out to be. I don't know if they are dishonest, having a bad day and had bad luck with problems or are letting their dislike of EA influence their reviews, but it's not nearly as bad as some AAA games that got rave reviews despite horrible launches. If nothing else, this game is a good barometer of how broken the video game "journalist" and reviews really are. I am having a lot of fun with it, that is all I can tell you.

DaveZero2658d ago

Usually I have friends trying to persuade me to buy the game they have, not with anthem I have them warning me not to get it.

Old McGroin2658d ago

Have they played it? A lot of the criticisms I've seen levelled at Anthem have been hugely exaggerated, judging by what I've played on PS4 so far.

maybelovehate2658d ago

Right with you. Really enjoying it. The gameplay is fantastic.

rainslacker2658d ago

So, how is the story, and the actual SP game? I don't care to team up in co-op, or rely on it, so is it possible to play solo?

I haven't read much about the story, or how you can actually play the game, I wasn't even aware it had a story or a SP campaign, or how its structured until it was about to release, because all they ever talked about was the general co-op stuff.

DerekTweed2657d ago

I think there is an option to set the mission to private and do it solo but honestly why would you want to?

It's simple enough let the matchmaking put you with randoms unless you want to attempt some of the higher difficulties, then you'd probably need some coordination with people your fairly familiar with.

I've not played very long so I can't say how good the story is but there does seem to be one.

rainslacker2657d ago

If there is the option that's fine. For me, it's that I'd prefer to not be forced to do co-op. I'm not much of a MP guy, and a lot of times, I find it less fun. Sometimes depends on the group, but ultimately, it just depends on my mood.

DerekTweed2657d ago

Destiny actually had quite long loading screens, at least at the start of missions, it was just hidden behind the ship launching.

Although the loading during a mission, when going into a cave for example, is no in destiny, the load times for these is quite short.

One difference where destiny is much better is the loadout screen can be accessed at any time, at least for your current guardian. Anthem you need to go to the forge between missions.

ok I believe you, I'm going to pick this up when the price drops to $10.

Thundercat772658d ago

By that time, they game may be complete and all the bugs fixed.

Kuma2658d ago

All the reviews are wrong. I am having fun with it. I give it a 8/10 on gameplay and 10/10 graphics.

nyu12658d ago

The reviews are subjective opinions.

If you're having fun with it, awesome.

starchild2658d ago

You're completely right. The scores people assign to games are subjective. But human beings can also easily be swayed by biases separate from the preferences and tastes that would normally shape their opinion of a game. In the case of Anthem I think that has definitely happened on a pretty wide scale. But that's just my opinion.

jukins2658d ago

Having fun so far loading is bad though. Couple times I almost turned the game off because of the loads.

Old McGroin2658d ago

You playing on PC? I'm on PS4 and loading times are no worse than Destiny tbh. It's a lot more fun than I was lead to believe it was though!

Could Anthem live on? Tech allowing local server hosting existed, former executive producer says

BioWare's multiplayer shooter Anthem was terminated this week because EA no longer wanted to maintain servers for people to play the game on, and without them, no one can play the game. But the former executive producer of Anthem has revealed that BioWare had technology working, close to the game's release, that would enable us to host our own servers to play the game on.

EA/Bioware should allow us to host our own servers to let this game live on.

Christopher141d ago

I'd be fine just playing it as a localhost and dumb as rocks AI bots. Just give me the choice.

Anthem Players Report Download Errors A Week Before Shutdown

BioWare and EA had previously said the game would be accessible to those who owned it until it shuts down on January 12.

Never buy online games unless there is some kind of refund policy.

Only days remain before EA will switch off the servers to BioWare's ill-fated multiplayer game

Time flies (like a Javelin suit): there are only 10 days left to play BioWare's ill-fated multiplayer game Anthem before the servers are switched off, presumably forever.

In my opinion, Anthem was a good IP that was worthy of a no man's sky or cyberpunk 2077 treatment.

To this day, their sub reddit is active and I was able to get into a game quickly a few weeks ago when I booted it up.

It is a shame EA and Bioware didn't want to give the game the overhaul it needed to turn it into a competent looter shooter.

GamerRN153d ago

They were close to releasing the overhauled version and then EA cancelled it

TheGamersDojo151d ago

I wholeheartedly agree. If ANY game deserved to get the rework/relaunch it deserved it was this one. More than literally any other. Even over FFXIV, No Mans Sky etc.

SlothLordPootus154d ago

I just finished this up a couple days ago. Although it's a bit repetitive and the story is meh, the game feels great to play. Even if you can only hop on the game for a couple hours before it shuts down, I think it's worth it.

chicken_in_the_corn153d ago

Really enjoyed this. Shame to see it go.

Software_Lover153d ago

I didnt know servers were still up. I could have been playing!!!

2nd comment attempt (1st doesn’t appear & this may register as duplicate):

They can spend billions to buy or get bought but they can’t spend a fraction of that to fix or overhaul a game that could have been truly special, smh.
